$275 here. So around 20% cheaper if the lower price is the norm?

Would be nice if these turned out to be common place prices after the drive is released.

Still, I wish Intel would make 120GB drive around $350 price point. My Vista installation along with all the programs and games (not many, only 3) take 60GB, 80GB would be simply too small for me, and I do not want to pay $500 for 160GB. Guess I could start camping for some promotion/mail in rebate on 160GB drive.

Could always pray for a bigger cashback from MS on ebay purchases.

Yeah, I saw the update on the cashback thread. I don't think the drives will make it to ebay in time for August 10th though. Oh well, will have to be extra vigilant looking for deals.

Viper do you have confirmation whether the soon to debut 34nm based NAND are going to involve simultaneous release of both SLC and MLC chips, or will it just be the MLC based NAND chips at first?

My understanding is MLC first.

How about we sell each other "IOU a 1337 SSD" vouchers?

I routinely do 8-12GB network transfers (bringing movies local to watch them). My 7200.12 appears to saturate Gbit (I see 80-110MB/s). Intel drive would take ?50% longer to finish those transfers. (Honestly, I wouldn't care. Itd be that much faster to load the movie once its done transfering. Plus all the other SSD benefits.)

I guess I just assumed we were always discussing consumer electronics, including drives.

Just as long as everyone's clear that these are toys compared to the good stuff.

Viper GTS

So in your opinion a BMW M3 is a toy compared to a Lambo?

The difference is that nobody goes around talking about the M3 as if it is the pinnacle of performance.

Surely I'm not the only one here who has a non-consumer use for an SSD, let's set our sights a little higher. Of course I am not suggesting that people rush out and buy an STEC SSD for themselves. But if people on this forum will buy $1,000 Areca RAID controllers surely they would be open to at least learning about something better to connect it to.

Viper GTS

Fair enough. I guess I'm coming from the college kid perspective that would be ecstatic owning a SSD [non Jmicron controller] (or M3 )

SSDs are not for storing your movies on, at least not with the current $/GB.

I would wager at least 90% of those of us who use an SSD in a desktop have it in addition to a conventional HDD. The SSD is for the OS, certain apps with lots of random access I/O, and maybe for swap. Videos & music which are both large files accessed sequentially belong on the regular HDD.

The SSD is for getting to Windows 7 x64 in 10s, with half of that being BIOS POST.

1: I dont leave them on the local drive, its just for viewing it off of (so that a network failure doesn't screw up watching the movie
2: The machine itd be on would be a 0 spindle ultraportable (with dock, used as main machine) laptop.
3: People still shut down their computers?

takes a while for xp to un-hibernate even with an intel x18-m. not sure if its xp but that loading the 3.2gb of ram back is not as fast as one might think.

Yeah its gonna suck at restoring a hibernate file, anything SataII and slower is bound to.

3.2GB/70MB/s = 47 seconds

I just tried this with my X25-M.

Resuming from hibernate took over twice as long as a normal boot (meaning it increased to about 20s including post to get to Win7 x64, big deal...). The bigger problem is the time it takes to write the hibernate file, about 45s. Fortunately the OS is smart enough to only write the memory actually used to the hibernate file, not my entire 6GB or this would be worse. (And worse yet, my video card didn't send a signal to one of my monitors after resuming until I changed the resolution.) If you don't have anything open that you need to keep open you are a lot better off just using a normal shutdown.

Man, Hibernate sucks. It seems good by skimming through the descriptions, but in reality, its effectively equal to shutting down your system and still have a chance to have your files to be corrupted.

Sleep is a much better idea.

The only effective use of hibernate that I have experienced so far is its ability to save the system state at the time of powering down when the power-down (hibernate) is initiated automatically by an APC due to power-loss.

Not all programs handle automated shutdown gracefully, and some programs that are running (computing) at the time can lose all the work they've done up to that point in the calculation.

Saving the processes and their ram contents to disk during hibernate allows a seamless restart to the calcs when power is restored to the computer.

my guess would be trim.

/fingers crossed

Really really want one of these drives - but also really don't want one that offers built-in degrading performance.

Win7 + SSD/TRIM = Win

This fall maybe?

Gotta love the egg.

The egg is awesome when it comes to rma's and refunds in my lengthy experience with them, it really makes the defining difference when it comes down to eliminating apprehension over buyer's remorse. I prays they never change this part of their business strategy in years to come.

I dunno! It has been treated well if you see it

Loved it, but 80GB wasn't quite enough for me and it makes more sense to nab one of the new cheaper and faster models while I upgrade to 160GB.
