Cherry Trail took a page from Broadwell's book and (likely) sustains Turbo clocks longer than its predecessor. Perhaps there's some IPC improvement too.
Atom Z3795 got few desings wins, other Bay Trail chips are quite a bit slower than the Atom x7 Z8700.

Atom x7 delivers almost the same performance as Core M-5Y10 @ multi-threaded x264 benchmark. Core-M gives you better single-thread performance (at a higher price).

Update: Now their Surface 3 Preview is out.

The first test for the CPU performance shows that the new Intel Atom x7-Z8700 CPU is slightly faster than the Z3795, which is the current top version of the Intel Atom Bay Trail generation (22 nm). The Core i3-4020Y in the base configuration of the Surface 3 Pro has a clear advantage in the single-thread tests, while the Z8700 is actually often on par in the multi-thread tests. You can also clearly see the performance advantage of the i5-4300U CPU in the Surface Pro 3.

The four cores of the Z8700 CPU usually run with 479 MHz while idling with small spikes to 800 MHz. All four cores manage 2.4 GHz under load in the Cinebench multi-thread test.

4-core 2.4GHz turbo is now possible, Atom x7 Z8700 is close to 10% faster than Atom Z3795 in MT workloads.

man 3100 points on CG Graphics is WAY too close to a mobile HD4000 perf, better than i expected.

And its officially outperforming Kabini Athlon 5350 igp.

Great news indeed. Here's hoping Skylake GT2 and Broadwell-K GT3e close the gap in desktops too. I want at least 20-24 Gen 9 EUs for Broxton next year.

I just hope to see more active stylus from the windows tablets now that is cheap enough that OEMs can actually make money selling an active stylus separately.

Especially since Microsoft has bought active stylus maker N-Trig and perhaps this means more integration into the operating system itself.

Cherry trail is a great product and a great SOC, now the only problem is pricing and availability, something that Intel sometimes gets great with tablets, but also has a habit of screwing up on.

Have crap pricing or crap availability and it does not matter how good of SOC cherrytrail is.

2 months from my findings, from shipment to actual products. cherry trail began shipping the 5th of january and still nothing except the surface 3...

No, it was not 2 months, Asus T100 was the first, and it took a while for the budget processors(Z3735D) to start showing up, only after that BT was all over.

Once Atom X5 arrives at the Chinesse market, CT will be all over in a very short time.

Is it possible to get the n series processors to run at boost clocks if you can keep them cool or do they auto throttle?

Lenovo K80 with Moorefield, 4 GB of RAM, 4,000 mAh battery officially introduced in China for ~$290

As mentioned in the paragraph above the Lenovo K80 will be released in two main variants. The one that is certain to hit the Chinese shelves on the 30th of April is equipped with 2 GB of RAM and 32 GB of storage. Other than that the smartphone features a 64-bit Intel Atom processor running at frequencies of up to 1.8 GHz, and houses a 5.5-inch Full HD display.

The K80 is equipped with a 13 MP camera with optical image stabilization; it boasts 4G LTE connectivity and has a large 4,000 mAh battery under the hood. Despite the generous battery however, the smartphone is only 8.5 mm thick. Other details include Android 5.0 Lollipop with Lenovo Vibe UI on top, and apparently the smartphone will be launched in three flavors: silver, black and red.

We also mentioned a second Lenovo K80 variant equipped with 4 GB of RAM and 64 GB of internal storage, but as yet it is unclear if this particular model will hit the shelves on April 30 alongside the Standard Edition. Sources in China say the Standard Edition with 2 GB of RAM will have a price of 1,499 yuan which roughly converts to $242, but there are also reports that the beefier model will have a price tag of 1,799 yuan, or $290. Another Moorefield phone with good specs at accessible prices.

Acer’s latest 15 inch Chromebook costs just $200

Acer was the first company to introduce a Chromebook with a 15.6 inch display when it introduced the $250 Chromebook 15 in January. A few months later the company added a more powerful model with a Core i5 processor for $500.

Now Acer is going the other way, introducing a cheaper model with a starting price of just $200. The Acer Chromebook 15 CB3-531 should be available in North America starting in July. This laptop features a 15.6 inch, 1366 x 768 pixel display, an Intel Celeron N2830 Bay Trail processor, up to 2GB of RAM, and 16GB of eMMC storage.

Eve T1 Review: A premium-like, low-end Windows 8.1 tablet on the cheap

Ever since Microsoft announced Windows 8.1 with Bing, hardware makers have been churning out new, inexpensive devices running Windows, making new devices accessible to pretty much anyone. The EveT1 is just one of many new Windows 8.1 tablets being sold on the cheap, however to me the EveT1 stands out just a bit compared to the rest.

A common trait you’ll find with these new, super-cheap devices being sold on the market is that they feel cheap. Considering they are cheap, this is to be expected. However, the EveT1 is a different story. Still being cheap and still sporting entry-level specifications, the device feels premium, which is somewhat of a rarity when it comes to these low-end devices.

The EveT1 sports the following specifications:

Intel BayTrail 1.8GHz CPU
2GB RAM
32GB Internal Storage (with expandable MicroSD card slot)
4300mAh battery
8-inch IPS display (1280x800)
2PM front facing camera / 5PM rear
MicroUSB 2.0 port
802.11n WiFi
Bluetooth 4.0
GPS

As we’ve already mentioned, the EveT1 is not a high-end device by any means. However, using the device is a breeze. Performance never fell down when doing basic tasks such as checking emails, browsing the web and watching video. Although the device runs Windows 8.1, it’s unlikely you’ll want to run photoshop, as the device is simply not designed for such uses on an 8inch screen.

...The 4300mAh battery held up tremendously throughout our uses. I easily got at least 8-9 hours of use out of the device each day, and even more if I was only using it here and there to check email. Charging times are pretty quick too, you can easily get the device charged up and ready to go within an hour or two of plugging it in.

...The EveT1 is available now for the low-low price of 159 euros (£109.57 or $162.43), that price doesn’t include shipping so depending on where you are you’ll most likely have to pay a bit more than that. You can buy one directly from the makers of the EveT1 right now.

I hope to see lots of similar tablets packing Cherry Trail and Windows 10 later this year.

If BT is any indication, about 6 to 8 months, but CT seems to be coming a bit faster, but im talking about the budget tablets, the ones from $120 to 199 coming with X5s.

X7 its gona roll out fast after the first device is released, like it did happen with the T100 and Z3740, other Z3740 devices where out fast.

Man, I was looking at the x3. The lowest end model is runing LPDDR2 (!) and the top end model can't do 1080p @ 60 fps. I know it's at the bottom of the barrel, but Mediatek and friends have to be way better than this.

Guess this what happens when Intel does a product that's not on their fabs...

Seems like AMD gave up on their sub-5W x86 tablet SoC plans. No x86 Mullins successor this year or next.
I hope Skylake-Y raises the bar in terms of CPU & graphics performance so that Broxton can offer a big leap (compared to Cherry Trail) at lower price points.

Nice find Shintai. Also:

Some Windows 10 phones can also be PCs (just add a display, mouse, and keyboard)

Microsoft is showing off software that could let you use a next-gen Windows Phone as a desktop computer. Windows 10 includes a feature called Continuum that allows the same device to be used in different modes.

Microsoft had previously shown Continuum working on 2-in-1 tablets, allowing apps to switch from notebook to tablet mode when you detach a tablet from its keyboard dock.

Now the company is also showing Continuum on phones: allowing you run Office or other Windows apps on a big screen.

Just hook up your phone to an external display and connect a Bluetooth mouse and keyboard, and your Windows 10 phone becomes a desktop computer.

Just imagine the possibilities with a x86 Broxton phone (possibly faster than Cherry Trail at phone SoC power levels) + Windows 10 next year. I think Intel and Microsoft didn't realize the potential here yet.

This hasn't been talked about by MS before. I watched the video and he mentions this runs on Qualcomm processors, which tells us a lot about this feature.

Its going to be a recreation of the desktop from WinRT. Certain first party apps will run, a long with apps from the MS store.

Though that's still surprising to hear about it.

Will it switch to desktop mode when it is hooked up to be a PC, or will one be stuck with the Metro/Modern interface?

The video in the link has lots of info and screen images.

It switches to a desktop mode and the phones home screen becomes the start menu.

Got really excited until I started reading about the windows store. Anyway, this is the only way I see windows (and by extension Intel/x86) gaining a segment in the phone market. To be able to use your phone as a primary PC by attaching it to a monitor, and a dock with a mouse and keyboard. Too bad they are gimping it to try to force you to use the windows store. Didnt MS learn anything from Win RT?

I forgot to add earlier the difference between this desktop and winRT is that in Win10 MS store apps can run windowed on the desktop. So this should be a lot more usable than WinRT. Provided the apps you want are available on the MS store, of course.

My guess is that eventually MS will allow conventional x86 desktop apps to be run on Windows Phone 10 without needing Continuum.

What would be the point of that? Run apps with unusable UI?
It makes more sense to make them run only on a big display with mouse and keyboard.

never gonna happen, not only because it's pointless since they would be unusable on a phone, but also because then it would be easy as cake for crackers to break any kind of security on the phone
