pretty sure i've read many times that intel is ending contra revenue in h1 2015... so it should be done by now, for tablets.
it will however keep contra revenue for phone socs...
Completely wrong.
Contra revenue will be reduced with 800M$ in 2015. This comes from the CFO.

Toshiba is launching a new line of 10.1 inch tablets with full HD displays, Intel Atom x5 Cherry Trail processors, and Windows 10 software. The Toshiba Encore 10 and Encore 10K will be available in September for $299 and $479, respectively.
What’s the difference between the two tablets? The Toshiba Encore 10K comes with a keyboard dock that sports a separate battery. This provides up to 11 hours of battery life when you’re using the computer like a notebook. The Toshiba Encore 10, on the other hand, is just a tablet with up to 7 hours of battery life.
Both models feature up to 4GB of RAM, 64GB of solid state storage, 802.11n WiFi, and Bluetooth 4.0. The tablets are available with Windows 10 Home or Windows 10 Professional… although prices for the Encore 10 with Windows 10 Pro start at $399.
The tablets feature microSD card slots, micro HDMI ports, and micro USB ports. But the Encore 10K also has two full-sized USB 3.0 ports in the tablet dock, along with full-sized VGA, HDMI, and Ethernet jacks...
...The box is basically a small desktop Windows computer that’s designed to fit comfortably in your living room, allowing you to run Windows apps on a TV.
The system features an Intel Atom x5-Z8300 Cherry Trail processor. It’s a low-power 14nm, 64-bit quad-core chip with Intel HD graphics. The processor should offer better performance than a Bay Trail chip, but it still uses just a few watts of power and doesn’t generate a lot of heat. That allows Tronsmart to use passive cooling: there’s no fan in the case.
Other features include 2GB of RAM, 32GB of storage, dual-band WiFi, and Windows 10 Home software. The box also features Ethernet, HDMI, headset, microSD, two USB 2.0 ports and a USB 3.0 port.
Gigabyte is getting ready to add a few new computers to its BRIX family of mini PCs. The Gigabyte BRIX GB-BXCE-3205 is a compact computer with a 15 watt Intel Celeron 3205U Haswell processor, while the BRIX GB-BACE-3000 features an even lower-power 4 watt Celeron N3000 Braswell chip.
Fanless Tech obtained a document that provides some specs for the upcoming systems.
Xiaomi will launch a Windows 10-powered tablet in the ongoing quarter, according to a known Chinese analyst Pan Jiutang. The device will be the successor to the Mi Pad tablet (shown in the image below), which the company unveiled back in May last year.
However, there was no word on whether the new tablet will run the standard Windows 10 version or the mobile version, dubbed Windows 10 Mobile. It's worth mentioning that Microsoft recommends the standard edition for tablets with displays larger than or equal to 8-inches.
No way I would *ever* pay 400.00 plus for a device with atom in it. At least until they come out with faster cpu performance. Well, maybe if you got 4G connectivity. For 479.00 though you should get core M.
Best Buy has an Asus 11.6" Bay Trail laptop advertised this week for 149.99, 2gb ram, 32gb hard drive. Really tempting, except I have way too many computers already.
I really dont like the trend away from ULV big cores to atom, but man, a laptop for 150.00? I could live with it at that price. When it starts to go over 200, then not so much.
Like I have said before, I have a BT tablet, and it is not terrible, but certainly it needs to be priced very low. My biggest regret is that I really cheaped out and got one of the super budget Winbook tablets from Microcenter, with only 1gb ram and 8gb hard drive. It had enough space initially, but with updates, I keep running out of disk space (<20mb). I am also afraid to upgrade to Win 10, because I dont now if it will use more disk space.
This one
I dont know if this sale price applies everywhere or if it is some kind of regional special.
There's no doubt that contra-revenue is still in effect for 2015, but I was under the impression that it was principally associated with shipments of Bay Trails into the low-end.
http://www.digitimes.com/news/a20150807PD206.htmlHuawei Technologies and Xiaomi Technology are expected to increase adoption of in-house-developed ARM-architecture application processors (APs) in their own-brand smartphones.
Xiaomi and Huawei's strategy is expected to directly impact AP providers such as MediaTek and Qualcomm. Within the global top-5 smartphone vendors, Apple, Samsung, Huawei, Xiaomi and LG, which together contribute over 60% of worldwide shipments, four of them have already adopted in-house developed APs or have been aggressively increasing their adoption, which could seriously damage independent ARM-AP suppliers as well as x86-based solution supplier Intel.
Did Huawei or Xiaomi ever released Intel phones?
The source itself indicates ARM AP providers will be directly affected. Also there's nothing new right there, except the unofficial confirmation that Xiaomi is now developing in-house SoCs (which was long rumoured by the way).
Moorefield's first important smartphone design win (ASUS ZenFone 2) is outselling popular phones from well-known brands like Motorola's Moto G, Apple's iPhones and Samsung's Galaxy S line @ Amazon's best-selling unlocked phones rank.
And that's just a 22nm SoC with Silvermont cores and Apple A7-era graphics, I'm pretty sure Broxton will be able to do better next year with 14nm Golmont cores and Gen 9 iGPU.
The market has spoken, there's space for competitively priced Intel smartphones, despite what haters say.

Tronsmart Ara X5 TV box with Windows 10, Cherry Trail coming in August

That has to do with the features and the price, not that it has an intel CPU.
Throw something ARM in there (same performance level) and it would sell just as fast as long as the price isn't bumped up.

Does Intel have any plans for a SoC with integrated modem? That is usually a sign someone is serious about the phone market.
Teclast has just officially announced the Teclast X98 Pro, as expect. It’s an Atom X5 Z8500 Cherry Trail powered X98 Air 3G / Air II successor. With 4GB of Ram and an eMMC 5.0 spec flash drive. The rest of the design according to the info via the live update pages seems just like the X98 series.
Looks like no USB 3.0 or dual band WiFi upgrades sadly. There was a mention of TF card read rates up to 120mb/s? Is the MicroSD card slot wired up via a USB 3 card reader at least? I hope so or it was something lost in translation.
A lot of talk on how the new generation Atom is much faster, 50% faster at 3D Teclast claim. And double the Ram bandwidth with dual channel LPDDR3 1600Mhz Vs single channel 1333Mhz in the current X98 Air series.
Power savings of the 14nm process, Teclast claim 8 hours of battery life. I have mine preordered and I hope it ships out soon for review.
..the real question is if there is any space for Intel to make profits.

Broxton might be a fact soon, but I can't see any future to SOFIA, specially if they are at 28 nm and with DDR2.We should have had Broxton and Sofia by now. The slip of 10nm also hurts for getting momentum.

It's extremely sad. I don't know what happened, but if you view Intel as a black box that puts out processors, then Intel's execution since the dawn of Atom like 8 years ago has been the pinnacle of lackluster.
I have listened to the AnandTech podcasts 10 to 13 now, which are around the end of 2812, and somewhere they talked about... 22nn Valley view (Atom for phone) being delayed to 2014. In 2013 it became apparent it would be H2 of that year. In 2014, when Moorefield didn't really show up although it wasn't too bad, but who knows why OEMs preferred the octacores, Broxton got delayed to 2016 together with Sofia 14nn, and in early 2015 Sofia 3G, Sofia quadcore didn't really show up and now we know Sofia 4G is early 2016. We also know that Sofia 14nm and possibly Broxton is pushed to the end of 2016.
And never mind the Trails for tablets. They got their 46M in 2014 and they are in some nice cheap laptops or convertibles, but no major Samsung or so design wins and only at the very end of 2013. Willow Trail, if real, got cancelled, Cherry from Q4 to I dunno, but CT is simply beyond boring. I haven't even seen reviews of it, although rumor has it that it and Braswell are on the market.
I thought Brian Krzanich was like really pushing for mobile and he wanted to succeed there, and all the talk and apologies at Investor Meeting, but so far he's doing worse than Otellini, which many would have thought was impossible. Maybe good that Eul is gone.
So to go full circle, Anand was saying that for Intel it's always a story of waiting for the next thing on the horizon. Almost 3 years later, we're still in the same position.
But now things will be different. Now there will be other big cores like A72 and Kryo. So Broxton can go straight to low and mid end, and hopefully someone at Intel noticed how sluggish things were going with Atom and decided to do the same for Cannonlake like they did with Broadwell, but from 4W to 2W and with integrated modem.
What are those guys at Infineon and Atom doing?!
At least they are in the profitable datacenter with Xeon and Altera... Might have been a better purchase than Qualcomm.
