If it uses Cherry Trail, that would suggest Intel IGP, which I guess is nice.

Which definitely means throttle city...I would like to see the sustained performance on this phone; however, it could use liquid cooling like the new MS phones? If that was the case, it may perform for a bit longer.

Admittedly, I've been waiting for an X86 phone, but one that runs Windows. I've heard rumors about Intel testing CoreM in phones, but nothing on Cherry Trail. I'm also really eager to see how Broxton performs once it's released.

You can always run Windows in a VM.

Ian's article on the new, faster Braswell stepping says "Bulk shipments of chips for devices will start from January 15th 2016,...." Best case, when might motherboards with the revised chips be available?

Just when you thought you have seen everything.

Intel launches $399 Cherry Trail smartphone for developers

http://liliputing.com/2016/01/intel...eproject-tango-smartphone-for-developers.html

Curious choice, why not Moorefield (Atom Z3590) instead? Let's not forget Broxton replaces both Cherry Trail (tablets) and Moorefield (phones) later this year.

That is pretty sweet,

The most interesting part to me though would be the compatibility it would have with other OSes (due to x86 being a standardized platform).

Shouldn't this be something that could load up any vanilla x86 phone OS build in the future?

(Same with the Rockchip SoC phones)

Some bits about Goldmont from Intel's latest SDE:

Emulation support for the Intel® Secure Hash Algorithm (Intel® SHA) extensions present on the Intel Goldmont microarchtiecture.

Emulation support for the Intel® Memory Protection Extensions (Intel® MPX) present on the Intel Skylake microarchitecture and Intel Goldmont microarchitecture.

Took a while but many original Bay Trail-T designs are getting Cherry Trail now. New Dell Venue 8 Pro, but it's more expensive.

Dell’s new Venue 8 Pro tablet is faster, higher-res, and twice as expensive

The 2013 Dell Venue 8 Pro was one of the first 8 inch Windows 8.1 tablets to feature digital pen support. It was priced at $299 and up, but over the past few years Dell has offered models for as little as $199.

Now Dell is giving its 8 inch tablet a major overhaul… and charging about twice as much money. The new Dell Venue 8 Pro (64GB) is now available for $399 and up, and features twice the memory and storage, a full HD display, a more powerful processor, and a Thunderbolt 3/USB Type-C port.

The Dell website suggests the starting price is $449, but that’s how much you’ll pay for a model with Windows 10 Pro. You can save $50 by opting for Windows 10 Home when customizing your order. Note that in both cases, you get the 64-bit version of Windows, which is a bump from the 32-bit software that came with the older model.

Other improved specs include:

1920 x 1200 pixel display (up from 1280 x 800)
Intel Atom z5-Z8500 processor (up from Atom Z3740)
4GB RAM (up from 2GB)
64GB of storage (up from 32GB)
NFC support

But... there's always chinese tablets:

Xiaomi launches Mi Pad 2 tablet with Windows 10 for about $200

About two months after launching the Mi Pad 2 tablet with Google Android software, Chinese company Xiaomi is getting ready to sell a Windows model with the same hardware.

The Xiaomi Mi Pad 2 with Windows 10 will be available in China starting January 26th for 1299 yuan, or about $200.

That price gets you a tablet with a 7.9 inch, 2048 x 1536 pixel display, an Intel Atom x5-Z8500 processor, 2GB of RAM, and 64GB of storage.

Xiaomi charges the same price for 64GB Android models… but there’s also Android model with 16GB of storage that sells for 999 yuan ($150).

Entry-level Asus laptops get a Cherry Trail upgrade

The Asus EeeBook X205 notebook was a head-turner when it launched in late 2014, thanks to a compact design, decent performance, and a $199 starting price. It was one of the first Windows notebooks in that price range to feature an 11.6 inch display and an Intel Bay Trail processor, but it was soon joined by Acer, HP, and Lenovo laptops with similar features.

Now Asus appears to be updating its entry-level portable notebook family with new models sporting newer Intel Atom Cherry Trail processors.

A new notebook called the Asus EeeBook X206HA is up for pre-order from a Danish store, and it seems to be extraordinarily similar to the X205… except that the new model has:

An Atom x5-Z8300 processor instead of an Atom Z3735F chip
1 USB 3.0 and 1 USB 2.0 port (the X205 had 2 USB 2.0 ports)
802.11ac WiFi and Bluetooth 4.1 (upgraded from 802.11n and BT 4.0)

Also another Atom x7 design win:

Voyo V3 Mini PC is Powered by Intel Atom x7-Z8700 Processor, Comes with 4 GB RAM, 128 GB Storage ($220)

Voyo 3 specifications:
SoC – Intel Atom x7-Z8700 “Cherry Trail” quad core processor @ 1.60 GHz/2.40 GHz (turbo) with Intel Gen8 HD graphics @ 600MHz with 16EU (2W SDP)

But is CT really a serious upgrade from the myriad Bay Trail tablets already on the market? I know CT has better igpu, but I dont try to play games on my winbook tablet anyway. What I would really like is better *cpu* performance. Flash in particular slows page loading down tremendously.

Z8300 is an upgrade to Z3735X, it has a slightly higher base clock(1.44Ghz vs 1.33Ghz) and the same turbo clock.

It remains to be seen if its any better because my Z3735D tablet can turbo boost cpu only to 1.83ghz for more than an hour.

Chuwi Hi8 Pro is 32 bit :S damn those retarded OEM using retarded UEFI32, if it was 64 bit i whould have purchased it for just $95, its a nice sub-$100 tablet, Z8300 and 1920x1200 screen.

WTH x2

1) Z8300 is up to 2GB?

2) What is doing UEFI 32 on a 4GB tablet? wth, Intel should start enforcing UEFI 64 on everything.

32-bit x86 will just not go away, will it. Makes it really hard to want to even write x86-64 assembly code when the target is mostly Atoms.

Kill me, but seeing how awful is Cherry Trail, definitely I want Bay Trail if posible or even AMD Mullins on their place. Intel is about to ruin another market with that failure...

I wouldn't say it is any more "awful" than Bay Trail.

Bay Trail was a huge advancement over previous atom and was a decent intermediate step. But they needed another very significant advancement in performance and performance per watt with 14nm atom, and did not really get either, at least in the cpu. Given the choice, I would take cherry trail over bay trail, but it certainly is not a compelling improvement. Not to mention, it was very late to market.

14nm has been a troubled node for intel, but they are so far ahead in big core x86 it is not a major disaster there, but it sure has set back their hopes of taking any marketshare from ARM.

NotebookCheck reviewed the Chuwi Vi8 Plus CWI519 (Atom x5-Z8300). Basically same CPU performance as Atom Z3735G but 50-70% faster graphics. Not that bad for an ultra cheap tablet with single-channel RAM.

We're not very far from Broxton now, which should improve the CPU performance of budget x86 devices.

It's crazy that this topic is 2.5 years old. I mean, they can have their delays for Ticks, but this is unacceptable. There were huge improvements for low end hardware when Silvermont came out, but 2.5 years later we're still at basically this same level.

Atom is clearly dead.

Intel lost in mobile because they never showed up with the big guns.

Yea, too bad actually. I would have loved to see x86 take off in mobile. When silvermont came out, I thought, "if 14nm brings another leap like this, they could make arm sweat". Instead, we got delay after delay and only a marginally improved product when it finally did come out, while ARM keeps pumping out better and better products. And no I dont consider the igpu improvements that significant, because they dont have the cpu power to really drive the igpu.

I dont know if they were just incompetent, or if they were afraid of cutting into Core margins, or what, but Intel's mobile efforts have been a total disaster (for the company.) I mean, I took advantage of some of the cheap subsidized atom tablets, but those cost intel money, and now the tablet market is pretty much saturated. And phones, well they are even further behind there.

Make it worse?
Android seems to stopped their improvements on X86 making ARM taking the lead again....
Why Intel and Microsoft didn't thought with their heads and they didn't released Windows Phone... with their x86 chips?

Rumor is they are working on a X86 Surface Phone, if that true, be prepared to see a huge number of chinese copies.

There is also another rumor that Nokia may drop ARM in favor of x86, something that makes sence if x86 Surface Phone becomes a reality.

What is the point? Do you expect Microsoft to release low-end/mid-range phones with x86 and only high end with ARM?
And is the user accepting, that a large portion of the software library does not run anymore due to it being natively compiled for ARM?

This article does a pretty good job of summing up why that doesn't make any sense: http://www.fool.com/investing/gener...-x3-wont-power-a.aspx?source=iaasitlnk0000003

Anyway, Windows Phone is dying off. Microsoft are more focused on their iOS and Android apps these days.

To be fair, when bt came out we all agreed it was a good cpu that just needed more igp power, ct is just that.

Most of the problem was on notebook processors because of lower clocks.

From what have been seeing the tablet ones look good.

I do agree the delays where too much.
