Google bought Deja News, a long time ago. So all that info is still there. However it's part of Google Groups, which kind of sucks.

And it was 17.999 years ago that you first indulged in internet pornography. Admit it! There you were. Staring at your svga screen. Sweaty palmed and worked up. But the fucking vax server was having a conniption and usenet was on the fritz! What the hell! You thought! I spent all day yesterday trying to figure out uudecode, and all I want to see is some e-boobies. But the only way I can do that is to call the campus tech support line and have them reset the server. But then I'll have to listen to support tech #2, aka "Johnnie" give the nerdiest yet punishingly knowing "heh heh" when he hears the desperation in my voice. Please, oh please. I've tried out Google Groups a bit and have found some great things I likely never would have, but a lot of the times when I try to open a thread, it will be missing a lot of replies. I assumed that it's kind of like Archive.org where yeah, they technically do have the website archived, but they're missing 90% of the media content and links rarely go further than two or three deep.

I found out about this technique from alert reader George Rasko, who sent me a letter describing something he came across on the World Wide Web, an exciting new computer network that you should definitely learn more about, because as you read these words your 11-year-old is downloading pornography from it.

By hooking into the World Wide Web, you can look at a wide variety of electronic "pages, " consisting of documents, pictures and video created by people all over the world. One of these is a guy named (really) George Goble, a computer person in the Purdue University engineering department. Each year, Goble and a bunch of other engineers hold a picnic in West Lafayette, Ind., at which they cook hamburgers on a big grill. Being engineers, they began looking for practical ways to speed up the charcoal- lighting process.

We got our first computer in around year 2000. We had dialup. Eventually got 1mb ADSL a few years later when it came out. Back then it was considered incredible. Now we just seem to take it for granted. I actually work in the CO now, and it's kind of funny to walk by the racks of equipment that used to serve the 1meg service. There is like 8 customers per card LOL. Back then it was the cat's ass.

I had an earlier anandtech account. But some how in the late 90s it got messed up and I had to create another one. There was no youtube back then but I could stream some sports and trailers with realplayer in what looked like 160 x 160 resolution. I had to bond my modems to get any decent speed. I also would redial multiple times to get a top speed. If I got 48kbps I'd hangup and redial. Kids these days have no idea how good they have. Around 1990 you pushed a turbo button to overclock. And I used command line stuff as 10 year old, you had to solve everything yourself. Now I just google my problems and if I can I use the gui.

I think the first time I used the internet was around 1992, my mom's boyfriend had AOL and he let me check it out. To be honest, I didn't even know what it really was and was a little scared of it... I really didn't understand how it all worked or what it's real purpose or motivation was. I can really go on this thing and make a plane reservation??? WTF???

That's true in some ways, but we also take more reliable cars, better medicine and other things like that for granted now, too.
