I remember when people tried to make you feel like a nerd for knowing shit on the internet. Now look.. the nerds won. They dominated. Nerds are taking over the world and making the rest of us their minions.

The nerd always wins. Think about it- you're called a nerd because you're doing something that a lot of other people aren't doing, meaning they're developing useful skills (as opposed to the jocks who are focusing on getting a ball from point A to point B faster than anyone else).

Nerds can take comfort in the fact that the people making fun of them will most likely be employed by them some day

My wife used to make fun of me for talking to people in chat rooms in the 90's. Now things like Facebook and Twitter are major forms of communication. Nerds are just 10 years ahead of their time.

precisely. people wonder why they cant find jobs, when unemployment rates for anything tech has consistently been like %3-%4 for the last umpteen decades, and pay has always been well above average.

I remember my first taste of broadband, DSL in the late 90's.

Omfg I forgot about this! My house line was really shitty and it was an act of god to get a full 56kbps.

I could tell by the handshake sound whether I was going to get a solid 56k connection (I believe it was a certain 'beep' or 'click' that marked the jump to 56k , I can't remember now) before the screen indicator comes out. If it doesn't sound right, I'd hangup right away and redial.

Back then I was sporting the USR Courier V.Everything*, which was really awesome and high end at the time (people said that it's the modem that the ISPs and BBSs use). I bought it as a 28.8 and because of the way the Courier worked (upgradable DSP) I was able to flash the firmware to 33.3k and eventually 56k. I felt like such a badass!

*It was supposed to be incredibly expensive but I got it for a fraction of the cost because it's from a 'grey market' through a friend of a friend. Thinking back about it, it was probably a stolen batch from an ISP or something. Dude got dozens of them and unloaded them super cheap. I knew at least 6-7 friends who bought it.

With USR modems, do you remember the "bong" sound when it made an X2 connection? There were two standards: Kflex and X2. X2 was USR exclusive and worked better than KFlex. They later unified the two with V.90.

I remember in the mid 90's i told a co-worker that PC companies should make PC's with different color cases instead of everybody crapping out the boring cream color cases/monitors. he called me a fucking moron... and it was a awful idea.
