With the increasing number of Muslims on this forum, and the rising anti-Islam sentiment amongst some members of this forum, I believe it is advisable to correct misinformation about the religion and beliefs that some may have.

This thread can serve as a bridge between the two sides, even though there shouldnt exist "two sides".

I ask the Muslims to respond to civil questions posed by members with proper reference to the Quran and Sunnah, preferably with a link to the specified source.

I ask the non-Muslims who have issues about the religion to pose civil question regarding the "religious beliefs" and not cultural values and traditions of certain countries which can be vastly different from the teachings of the religion.

Finally, I would also request the mods to sticky this thread so we can have one source of information regarding the religion. If this is the wrong forum for this thread, I will move it to where it would be appropriate and would like the mods to advise where this thread should go.

Edit 1
So far, the following issues have been discussed:

*Apostasy
*Jalabeeb

*Prohibition of alcohol, pork, fornication.

I applaud the effort but it seems to me that a few of the Muslims in here are in disagreement with you.. can you accept that?

It would also be impossible to sticky this topic.

Alright, I've got a Muslim friend whose parents have been very hospitable to me since I got here. What sort of gift would Muslim parents be the most impressed by?

A correction...I'm not looking to impress them per se...but rather to have them best understand my gratitude

I am sure the disagreements can be settled in a civil manner and it is always good to listen to all sides of the spectrum. There are many sects of Christianity. Similarly, there are a number of sects of Islam. There are differing interpretations and we (both Muslims and non-Muslims) can learn more about a religion in this thread.

I disagree that women should cover up. It's pointless. In today's society you cannot go anywhere with that mentality. Let it start .... (Hey but I do respect them for believing in something like that, but I don't agree).

I think Attar would be a fine gift. Its natural essence, free from alcohol. One of the best comes from the belly button of deers, or so I've heard. It is VERY expensive, again so I've heard. Many North Africans sell them in Chicago, or you could get it from an Arab store in your local area. Attar is also called Ittar. It comes in a small bottle, about the size of your forefinger. Hope this helps.

I do think people have Islamophobia (similar to Homophobia)...

I just wish religion would go away It seems to divide people more than bring them closer.

Interesting. I will google this.

Now, just to clarify, the gift you've suggested would be to give to the parents and not to the girl, yes?

Please read Surah Noor. It contains clear cut injunctions from God. Let me provide a translation. Please remember, the translation is NOT the word of God.

And tell the believing women to lower their gaze and be modest, and to display of their adornment only that which is apparent, and to draw their veils over their bosoms, and not to reveal their adornment save to their own husbands or fathers or husbands' fathers, or their sons or their husbands' sons, or their brothers or their brothers' sons or sisters' sons, or their women, or their slaves, or male attendants who lack vigour, or children who know naught of women's nakedness. And let them not stamp their feet so as to reveal what they hide of their adornment. And turn unto Allah together, O believers, in order that ye may succeed.

For an in-depth look on the concept of Hijab, please read: Link

Hope this helps. If you require more detail, feel free to ask.

So if it is not a word of God why must I believe in it?

Contact with a male for a Muslim woman is prohibited, as is the contact between a Muslim male with a woman is prohibited. I cannot speak for the conformity of religion of the said girl.

If you wish the gift to be given to the girl, it can be done so through her parents. Both males and females use Attar.

emm, I just quoted God's words as a translation. The word of God came down in Arabic. In Arabic, the word used is Jalabeeb. Jalabeeb is the loose outer garment that covers all a woman's body. It says in the Quran to use the Jalabeeb to cover all, and scholars say this means to use it to cover her head (agreed upon by all scholars) and her face (agreed by many scholars, not all) and one or both eyes (agreed by some scholars, not all), in order for it to be known that she is a free woman and so not to be exposed to any harm.

I'm sorry, but the Quran has clear cut injunctions about the principles of Mehram and non-Mehram.

Let me clarify the above post though, I misspoke.

Contact with a non-related male for a Muslim woman is prohibited, as is the contact between a Muslim male with a non-related woman is prohibited. If you would like more information regarding the term "Mehram", please feel free to ask.

What was so bad about the book Satanic Verse that caused Salman Rusdie to get death threats for? I never read the book so I'm just curious what about it was so bad.

Ladies and gentlemen. Muslim women are allowed to talk to men. Those that want to hide can become housewives and go nowhere in today's society.

That's all. Sorry, but this is making Islam look horrible and I'm defending it.

By the way the reason people hate Islam is because of how they treat women. (one of the reasons). You answered your own ?
