My parents gave me a good chunk of money awhile back and basically I had the same choice, upgrade my old outdated rig and my old old bed (Twin that I bought freshman year of college for some cheap amount and have had for 5 years).

I really wanted the computer but they strongly recommended the bed. I decided since they gave me the money and that's what they wanted me to get I would. I've actually saved money because of it since I feel better all the time and don't splurge on coffee all the time, and on top of that since my rig is slightly outdated i've stopped buying computer games more money saved.

I have absolutely no regrets and love my bed.

I really doubt that. As bad as depreciation is on cars, depreciation on computer parts is way worse. Regardless of cost, any car is most likely worth more than ANY PC more than a couple of months old.

maybe he was unfortunate enough to buy Alienware before they were defunct

car is probably worth $800. The computer was just recently upgraded 2 weeks ago.
X38 mobo
2x500gb HDD's
2x250gb HDD's
HD3870
x1800xt
Q6600
2x2gb ram

In a custom built aluminum case I built myself that cost >$600 in materials alone.

All water cooled. Easily >$800.

I sold a 1987 Volvo 240GL sedan for $1500, and it had over 350,000 miles on it.

The system I got parts for:
Phenom 9600
9600GT
4GB DDR2-800
250GB HD
Pioneer SATA DVD-RW
case+PS
free game!
AMD 770 MB

Under $800 shipped.

...gonna install win2k on it

...and I just got a free Pentium M CPU+MB+2GB DDR-333 to upgrade my router with. Even though the amount of RAM for a router is silly since the HD is going to still just be a 2GB CF card.

Good choice. It will cost you much more to upgrade the bed. Bigger mattress means bigger bed frames could cost your $2K easily.

At costco:
queen size mattress set: $590
cal king size set: $900
frame: $32

Doesn't include headboard. The cal king would be about $1005 after tax. Being 6'1" tall, I was leaning towards that.

If you choose to upgrade the mattress to a larger one, then your room will seem too small, then you'll need to upgrade to a larger room, or house, etc. So, upgrading a bed can be very expensive. It might also lead to a girl spending time over, which eventually leads to marriage and kids which are also very expensive.

As such, I highly recommend the PC upgrade instead. You can live in your fantasy world for fractions of the cost of the real world. Plus, you'll be staying up all night playing MMORPG's and FPS so who needs a bed. As for the lack of companionship, well, I suggest some protection and the occasional trip to vegas / escort and you'll still be financially better off in the long run.

As to whether or not you'll be happier, well, let us know in 10yrs or so.

My girl and I sleep on a twin. I'm cool with it, but she can't stand it.

Stop molesting her whilst she is asleep will help.

...

My g/f, for one, likes it when I molest her while she's asleep. Waking up to sex = win!

if there's nothing wrong with the bed, why replace it?

It's a twin. I'm not even a big guy and they are too small now. Not to mention if you happen to have "company" it's not a lot of real estate.

The kind of guy who chooses to upgrade a computer over upgrading from a twin to a full or queen sized bed isn't likely to have "company" that often anyway, so it's a non-issue.

unless he drives a 1981 citation...

i stopped upgrading a while back too. now ill actually buy the 500 dollar systems, since its usually for my kids to fart around on anyway. my work supplies me with a decent laptop that does what i need, and replaces it every two years. i just dont have the energy to keep up with all the latest and greatest anymore. my bed, however, is a kick ass calif king i got about 2 years ago. damn thing cost more than my laptop did. the comfort was well worth it tho.

Definitely recommend to not get a mattress topper. Horribly uncomfortable, plus you could probably get more RAM or something.

Where the fuck are you buying your beds? Shit, I paid $500 for my queen size bed/box/metal frame, 10 years ago.

You don't have to have a sleep number, memory foam bed to get a good nights sleep.

Good choice. Beds are optional. I slept at my gf's house in college. The other option wasn't bad; sleeping on empty pizza boxes and crushed beer and soda cans.

The computer should've came before the house...

I gave up on keeping my computer ungraded. I'm still using the same basic system I was 5 years ago. The only time I've updated is when one of the parts dies. But I did get a pretty nice company laptop that has effectively replaced my desktop.

Of course my bed is about 10 years old and only a twin so I suppose the computers are still winning.

not sure how old you are OP, but beds are pretty important when you're all grown up and stuff.

my wife and i are pretty picky about our mattresses. it's gotta be the right amount of firmness or we both wake up crabby and with sore backs.

oh wait, i always wake up crabby. well, sore backs.
