Not gonna lie, deep down, I just really hate Keurig.

Maybe its the obvious per unit cost rip off of the K-cups, maybe its the plasticy taste, maybe its the $150 machine that does the same thing as a $10 machine (one cup tea/coffee maker, they do exist) or maybe its the super annoying cult following of people trying to rationalize why they spent money on all the above.

Its like a group of people trying to rationalize their purchase because they know its pointless and just can't admit it to themselves. If you agree with them and buy one too, then maybe it wasn't a waste! So they keep trying to convince people how great keurig is. The OP was even gifted one, lol.

"Wellllll.... if you buy generic K-cups its only half the per unit ripoff of the official K-cups!" etc.

A coffee maker that costs $150 and needs ADDITIONAL accessories, lmfao.

I've had a $10 2-4cup coffee maker for years, and buy big canisters of folgers/maxwellhouse/chuckfullo'nuts etc. I drink alot of coffee and its not even a blip in my budget. I treat myself occasionally to a 11oz-1lb bag (whatever it is these days) of dunkin donuts, starbucks, etc. fancy coffee. Although the difference is mostly in my head.

You can make coffee that tastes exactly like starbucks. First tip is its not coffee, its espresso that most people are ordering. So make espresso, you can even use dunkin donuts quality coffee. It actually doesnt matter. What makes it taste good is right after it comes out of the espresso machine, all hot and still concentrated, you add in caramel, or chocolate syrup, and add your choice of milk, in that order so the syrup dissolves. Then pour over ice. Voila, %$^&in delicious. Just not really worth all that effort.

Ah, this Keurig was a gift to me, no need for me to " rationalize" anything

Huge thanks to everybody else, you've given me lots of ideas & places to look for K cups

So you cook all your own meals? You never get anything pre-processed or packaged at the store? You still use a black and white flip phone because it does the same thing as an iPhone? Give me a break...everyone puts money towards different priorities. You saved however much money so you can spend it on something else.

No its the people giving it to you wanting to spread the way of the keurig around.

Lol there is zero convenience in the keurig over drip brew. What do you think "delay brew" is for? I peel out of bed and its already made. I spend wayyy less time pre-loading a drip brewer than people spend trying to find cheap K-cups or trying to make their own K-cups or whatever the hell keurig people do.

They sell reusable kcup attachments so you can use your own grinds. I've had mine for almost 3 years now and although it got a bit louder, it still works well. When it breaks, I'm buying another one immediately.

No offense meant, but reusable k-cup attachments are retarded. The point of the Keurig is convenience. There are a myriad of one cup coffee makers on the market (with reusable filters), starting at about $8.99. Paying >$100 to save absolutely no effort?

My Keurig has worked fine after years of daily use now, even though I have the infamous B40 "Elite" machine that is known to be problematic. Go figure.

I have probably put 1000 k-cups through my B40 and it still operates as if it were brand new

You pay a lot for the convenience of time saved with shitty quality with KCups. An electric kettle + aeropress is almost as fast and 100X better tasting. Of course you will have to sacrifice a minute of your life to get it. lol

I'm not a coffee drinker, but I think Keurig makes great sense - it's an alternative to even the cheapest $1 coffee at McDonald's and doesn't have the extra effort of cleaning that's involved with other methods at home. Compared to drinking out, you save money, still get a decent drink, and don't have to do much work/cleaning. I think it makes sense - not for everyone obviously, but there's a niche for whom it's perfect.

I just got something very similar, Starbuck's Verismo. it is starting to grow on me. I'm not a fan of how much the k-cups cost, but it does well at easy espresso.

I won't ever get rid of my french press, but when time is short the machine works well.

Just wait a week until the pump starts losing suction.

I have the B70 Platinum (I think that's the model, LCD display, blue LED lights everywhere) and it's maybe 2 years old. A couple months ago it stopped putting out a full cup of coffee. There was just no pressure in the system or something. I tried descaling (took forever due to no pressure) but then I stumbled upon some silly "answers" type site that advocated turning it upside down and beating the hell out of it. Presumably this is to remove air bubbles. So I had someone hold it and gave it a few solid whacks with the butt of an M4, and boom, it's worked fine ever since. Trying to decide if I want to bring it home with me or leave it for the next group of soldiers that replace us.

Lol I seriously wonder who figured that out.

I was the same way with my senseo until the pods started to be replaced with k-cups, gave up trying to find them locally and started to make my own pods with a 4-cup filter and coffee.

I just got a mini for $99 at Amazon. I'm a coffee/tea person so the tea cups work well for me. We also have one at work.

Best deals I've seen are Costco or using Amazon's subscribe and save.

The price for K-cups should be dropping by the end of the year as the patents run out and 3rd party K-cups enter the market.

My first thought as well, the quality of these things is pure junk and they charge top dollar for them.

I swear, every review I read about the "quality" (brewing half cups of coffee, making noise with no coffee, pump going out) allow me to EASILY flag the poster as a total idiot.

These things are built very well. I know of at least 5-6 people firsthand who have these, who have NO problems as long as the machine is descaled. The couple who refused to descale have all had these problems. Read online, ALL of the issues are due to lack of maintenance. The machine HAS to be descaled to function reliably.

To me, this is absolutely no different than someone saying X brand car company is total junk because the engine only lasted 20k miles... even though they never changed or added oil.

Other stupid questions answered below:

Is the k-cup system more expensive? Yes, 10-15% more if you compare costco k-cup to drip coffee. 20% if you buy from grocery stores. If you use the do-it-yourself cup then it's a better value at the expense of more time.

Does it taste different? Yes, the keurig presses water through the coffee rather than gravity drip.

Can it be weak? Yes, the k-cups have a measured amount of coffee in them. They are designed for a 8oz cup of coffee. If you select 12oz, it will be weak. If you select 6oz, it will be strong.

No kidding, I feel like every single hugely negative response on here is from haters who are upset that they didn't get a keurig machine for christmas.

Don't know about the rest, but this is clearly bullshit. Kcups are exponentially more expensive than loose grinds. I can make a POT of premium coffee for less money than a single Kcup of average coffee. For cheap Aldi coffee, I can make coffee for two months, as opposed to the week I'd get from a box of Kcups.

Every single problem posted is due to not descaling the machine with vinegar. If you have a keurig you HAVE to descale it every few months or it will only last a year or so.

Thanks for this. My girlfriend brought her Keurig over a few weeks ago, and I cleaned the water tank, but didn't know this was necessary. I'll clean it tonight.
