Jet's new album is good.

It's not as upbeat as Get Born, but overall it's a great album. Shine On is pretty good track on it's own, but when you know the backstory it's even better.

The radio station here started giving away the new Jet, Evanescence, Beck, and Killers albums this morning, going on all weekend. Call in when they say and you win all four.

i keep hearing this from various people...why is that?

Folks, if you are like the OP and listening to this mainstream shlock, do yourself a favor and go find music yourself instead of letting clearchannel and a couple of giant corporations decide for you by controlling the airwaves. Satelliteradio is a good start, and so is streaming independent stations off the net. There is so much good music out there - there's no reason to saddle yourself with the mediocre fare the OP listed.

BTW, if you want good music you have to check out the Decemberists new album (Crane Wife), the Dears new album (Gang of Losers), Voxtrot, Sunset Rubdown's "Shut up I am dreaming of a place" (I will keep mentioning this band everytime I talk about music, it's just that awesome), Rogue Wave's "Descendant like Vultures", The Walkmen's A "hundred Miles Off", Youth Group's "Casino Twilight", The Thermals, Devin Davis' "Lonely People of the World Unite",Like A Fox, The new Yo La Tengo's album and the new Scissor Sister's album

You get points for mentioning several of those, including the Crane Wife, but I'm afraid that album is going to be big and get overplayed. I like them but Colin Meloy's vocals are not made for heavy rotation. His voice grates on my nerves after a while.

I would really like to hear a full length voxtrot album, but it doesnt sound like there will be one for a while. If you're at all a smiths fan, you should check them out. I a little derivative, but they appear to be very good (need more material to make sure).

I've always like Yo La Tengo. need to pick up the new one.

The Walkmen album is too gimmicky - I even like the sound they switched to, but the songs just arent that good. I thought I liked Louisiana, but it got old quick. It's really not a very good song at all.

Essentially all of your disappointments are sophomore albums. One of the marks of a not-so-good band is one who blows their load after an album or two and goes nowhere new creatively, or can't even continue delivering what they had in the past.

With listening experience, you get better at identifying these donkeys from the get-go, and can more or less avoid their entire short-lived careers. Yay!

there's no way the killer's next one can live up to the first so i don't really expect it to.

Err, I wouldn't call Muse mainstream, at least not here in the US. I can't stand 99% of the sh!t they play on the radio and call rock, ie. Nickelback, Breaking Benjamin, whatever, pardon me for not being able to name many crappy bands, luckily I haven't absorbed too much crap.

Can't wait to see what the White Stripe's new album will be like though.

I really like Crane Wife, but I am pretty sure it won't get overplayed. Picaresque was much better and it wasn't overplayed.
Voxtrot, you have to listen to them live. If you haven't you should find a way to do it. A new EP is coming out next month.
I forgot to mention the new Belle & Sebastian album is really good too.
The Walkmen, you have to be in a weird mood to really appreciate how awesome it is (like in your car in the middle of the traffic as I am everyday) . It may be gimmicky but it's still much better than many of the stuff out there
Beth Orton's "Comfort of Strangers" is pretty good too
I also forgot to mention (I don't know how I forgot this one) Calexico's "Garden Ruin" it's pretty good.
These are only some that came out this year. As the advocate mention, there is a lot of good stuff out there, you just need to know where to find it. Satellite radio is a good start, podcasts, independent radio online, it's also ok. How do I find it? well, for starters, I go to concerts, sometimes you have to try stuff you 've never heard of before and see if maybe you'll like it. I also have the luck of having friends who live and breath indie music and they keep up to date. I am not saying that all indie is good (there is crap too, just look it up on myspace) and that all mainstream is bad (because it's not, actually I really like the new Barenaked Ladies' album). You just have to broaden your search past mainstream radio stations. I'll assure you that you'll find an awesome band along (that's what happened to me with sunset rubdown)
