So I come home from work today to find the last remaining DeathStar I own has finally bitten the dust. And so ends this horrible chapter in a long line of utterly useless and unreliable hard drives. Of the 6, yes six, IBM DeskStar drives I have owned or received as replacement for failed drives, ALL have failed. Yes folks, that is a 100% mortality rate. Obviously I will not nor have been buying any IBM/Hitachi for a LONG LONG TIME.

How long did you own that particular drive before it bit the dust? Actually, everything has a 100% mortality rate as time approaches infinity. Entropy consumes all. Peace.

I wonder if there is a little microscopic rebel alliance that goes around blowing up people's deskstars!

Well, the longest it could be is about 3-4 years (somebody know when they first came out ??) I still bave Maxtor drives from 200 meg on up I use to test since they still work !! I have a 4 gig I retired from active service since it had bad clusters, and I thought it was going to give out. I still use it to test systems and do sctach installs, and no bad additional clusters in 2 years !! I won;t buy IBM or Western digital drives. The last two I had die were WD's that were 3 months old, and I still read today about the wining 8 meg special editions, way too many posts for me on that problem (or dieing WD SE's)

Last I heard about those was that there was class action lawsuit against IBM from citizens of CA for the high failure rate of the deathstar. (High failure rate for you would be a little understatement...). I don't know the result of the lawsuit, probably in litigation forever.

That is just one of many... maybe you would like to join suit.
Contact an attorney. You know the old saying... have you been in an accident? Would you like to?

Sorry to hear about your passing DeathStar. I have RMA'ed everything but a Seagate over the years. I too had DeathStar 60GXP's fail, though not to the extent you have.

My Deathstar has no weaknesses, no exhaust pipe, no dodgy shield generator. 3 years and still running, although none of my critical stuff is on it anymore. Not trusting of it at all

I gave up trusting the DeathStar a long time ago. It music I had on CD, no real loss really. I'm on to WD these days. All WD SE's except for some old small Seagates still laying around.

Shame really they used to be alright

well, IBM drives are still some of the fastest around for server applications. Not to mention my 60GXP and new 120GXP have been working fine for as long as I've had them.

The seek time can't be beat, which is why they're wonderful for servers. How long have you had the 120gxp? I haven't heard of any failure problems with them so it would seem the whole reliability issue may have been limited to the 75/60gxp era.

the 120's seem to have fixed most of the problems, but the line you had was just plain awful.....I think there is some kind of class-action suit going on...

There is a class action suit going on. I actually signed up for it about 2 years ago back in 2001 I believe. I added my name to the suit after I had my first 3 failures, 1 of the failures being a replacement for a drive I had just sent off a couple weeks earlier. I doubt anything will come of the suit, probably some out-of-court settlement and the lawyers will get paid. That's all I'm expecting from it. Anything else will just be a bonus if it happens!

I thought the 60GXP had solved the 75GXP problems....I hope so any way, although I have been looking at the 8MB WD's as an upgrade (I have a 60GB 60GXP).
