Wait... there are games without cutscenes?

I meant it more like there are no CGI cutscenes, just in engine There are a lot of those, before and after the regular game sections.

I guess it must have been very apparent on the PS3, here it just feels like part of the game.

Well. In engine after subbing out textures for higher res textures, adding filters, and quickly writing it to the drive as a movie file to gloss over dips in performance.

I've put in about an hour and it hasn't made a good first impression:

- When the game first started, the audio was completely out of sync with the animations. I think it was installing stuff in the background while I was playing (at least I hope). It lasted for the first few minutes you spend playing as Sarah.

- Texture pop-in was a huge issue. Again, I'm hoping this is all because it was installing stuff in the background. During some of the early cut scenes it took a couple seconds for everything to load, so it was pretty jarring.

- I can't really fault the game for this, but I've never had another game do this before. The disc kept ramping up and down during the entire introduction sequence. It was very loud (hi pitched wail during ramp up) so I had to use headphones while it was happening. Frankly if all of this was due to the game installing in the background I would rather have let a progress bar run for an hour and play it properly once it was done.

-Enemy AI seems to be all over the place. Sometimes I can silent kill an enemy without issue, and other times it's like he screams when I grab him and alerts everybody nearby. It doesn't make any sense... I'm always crouched and I shouldn't have been in view of anybody. Sometimes it works, other times it assumes I want to take a hostage and then everybody in the area knows exactly where I am.

- You can't take ammo from most enemies. This is completely abnormal and takes me out of the game completely. It's a survival game and my instinct is to scavenge what I can from anybody. There is no reason I couldn't take the last few rounds somebody had in their magazine before they went down. Artificially reducing the ammo I can find on people just to make it seem more scarce completely ruins the immersion that was building when I started to scavenge for supplies.

+ On the good side, when everything loads properly the detail on the main characters is very good. Cutscenes look great and the acting has been good enough. The intro sequence is really intense and was well done barring the technical issues I had. I'm hoping more of the game is like this.

the AI is overrated in this game just as it is in every new game where they proclaim that the AI will be groundbreaking.

as for the ammo, maybe you are killing a lot of guys after their last shot? i like the fact that you don't have much ammo in this game and have to preserve it and use it wisely. that is what i used to love about resident evil games until they turned it into a "dude bro shooter" as someone on this forum would call it.

Once you stop loading things off the disc it'll help. I did digital and it wouldn't let me play till it had downloaded all 11 GB need for the single player. No texture snap in, no optical drive whining, no pause before the cutscenes.

I did notice the sound being off in the couch scene but didn't notice anything after that.

Ammo, well people do drop ammo later. Honestly once you get into the meaty parts (once you leave Bob) you won't feel stifled by lack of ammo. The first 4 hours is really about establishing stories and characters and honestly can be the hardest parts of the game because they want to get into the flow of the characters and action and they don't want to escalate. You don't fight any harder infected or harder humans(though maybe better armed) than you do in the opening area.

Also infected are extra sensitive. If you are going to choke them don't crawl right up behind them. You can click the choke button waaay before you get up to them.

The loading has something to do with your the disk and the game installing while you played. Mlb did the same when I was playing while it installed.

The enemies get harder depending on the difficulty. In some areas later you pick up ammo from them.

I've never had enemies alerted unless they were turned to the side and saw me coming from an angle. Or if an enemy was in proximity of another guy I was trying to take out.

The story and gameplay gets more intense later. You won't always need to use ammo either.

Most of the time I use shivs and once you get the durability upgrade it is great. Also the bow...it is satisfying.

Enemy view distance is pretty far. The can spot you if you move while they are looking. Take advantage of Joel's listen mode and note enemy locations and the direction they face.

Did about 30 minutes last night. Not much, but awesome so far. There's a profile for the Gold headset for those with it.

My advice regarding ammo complaints: Embrace the brick. It may be the most powerful item in the game and they're everywhere. It's probably overpowered.

Also, listen mode is very unnecessary. The game isn't any more difficult without it. You're better off getting a quick feel of the area and going, rather than hide - listen mode - wait - listen mode - wait -, and so on. There are plenty of cues to keep you from being spotted without it. The game's 3rd person anyway so you can move the camera around to your advantage and see plenty.

How can I activate the preorder bonus stuff? I don't see any option in game. Or is it already on by default?

You should have been given a code from who you preordered it from. If it was picked up at Gamestop, it'll be on your receipt you get when you picked up the game. You redeem that code in the PS Store, then you should be all set.

I pre-ordered on PSN. The addons are listed on my game as installed. I just don't know if they're working in the game or not... how can I tell?

Awesome. I'm going to grab that when I get home. I played through to the point of connecting with Ellie and used the headset without the profile loaded and it still blew away the sad sound from my tv.

Same issue but I think we haven't gotten far enough to make use of them.

When you select your difficulty in the main menu there is an option to turn pre-order bonuses off or on. Once you start the game you cannot change this setting. It only gives you the first tier healing upgrade and the pistol and rifle first upgrade. The rest are for online play.

I'm looking at New Game and difficulty selection... There is nothing here about addons. I can just go back (circle) or select the difficulty and start the game at the same time (cross).

In my current game, Joel has no supplement upgrades at the start nor were any weapons upgraded when I found the first upgrade table.

So... Where can I enable those things?

EDIT: Side note, the banter in this game is soooo nice and natural! The conversations just fit so well - really really enjoying the game!

At the main menu, go to options and you can adjust the options for each difficulty. The pre-order bonuses will be able to be enabled there.

Maybe I'm blind, but I don't see it... I can set things for each difficulty, sure, but those do not mention anything from the addons...

On easy I see subtitles, game hints, strategic tips, tutorial hints, gore, lock on aiming, listen mode, melee prompts, show tag pop ups, show reticle, show HUD, photo mode. The higher the difficulty, the less things show on the list. Nothing about the addons though...

I prepurchased on PSN. There were no separate codes to redeem. This is what my account shows :

I still can't find it. I'm quite sure I went through all the options...

Sorry dude I don't know. You have the single player free upgrades.

It is selectable but not when you start a new game.

Load the game when you see the window with the curtains and it says press any button you press something then go to options. There is an option for difficulty adjustments. It is in there. If not then something is messed up on your account. If you enable it there, you need to start a new game. It will not apply to a game already in progress.

If you go to the ps dashboard and go to library maybe you need to download those add on items first and they will be installed in the game ?

I would do it but I didn't pre-order it so I didn't get any of those promo codes.
