The Last of Us movie confirmed by Sony

The Last of Us was praised for its strong story and now the PlayStation 3 action game is getting a movie adaptation. Before you shrug your shoulders or roll your eyes, consider the talent behind the project.

Naughty Dog creative director Neil Druckmann will write the script for the film, according to Deadline's exclusive story. And Naughty Dog co-presidents Evan Wells and Christophe Balestra, as well as game director Bruce Straley, are also involved. Veteran Naughty Dog writer Amy Hennig recently left the company, though it's unknown if she'll contribute to the film.

The movie will be distributed by Sony's own Screen Gems production company. Deadline also notes that Spider-Man director Sam Raimi and his Ghost House Pictures company are attached to the project. Raimi's involvement with the project is unclear.

"Since our game released last June, we've talked with many companies about making a film, but we couldn't have found better partners who share our creative vision and high standards," Wells said about Screen Gems and Ghost House Pictures.

No other details about casting or plot for the Last Us movie were announced, so we have to ask: who would you cast as Joel and Ellie?


Not sure how I feel about this, I loved the game, it was basically an interactive movie and with Sony distributing through screen gems instead of columbia pictures, it seems to be at a bad start already.

I'd like to play the game. Not watch a movie based on it. pfttzzzzzppfft.

In the age of Walking Dead knock offs I don't need ANOTHER Walking Dead knock off. That's exactly what this will boil down to, regardless of it's originality to the genre. It's even worse than that though. It's a movie based on a video game spin off of the zombie genre.

I feel like this is a cash grab. The Last of Us was essentially a movie that you played. The only difference now will be it will involve real people, and ... you can't play it.

We already know the outcome, so what's the point?

I'd probably see it, but wait til DVD.

I think it'll be great. Fantastic game, and I think it would work well as a film. I just hope it is done with the same somberness and realism. I hope they don't do any BS with shaky-cam and a lot of stupid modern movie conventions which would be out of place. This would be a great opportunity to make a film in a more old school way.

I hope Raimi isn't directing, he isn't fit for the job.

But I think it could be done very well.

For casting? I'd probably use Josh Brolin as Joel. And some unknown for Ellie.

Sony wants you to buy their system even if it is on it's last leg. If it were released for PC, many people would just grab it on PC and say the hell with buying a PS3+the game. There's no telling how many consoles this game alone helped Sony sell in its final days.

If you look on Youtube you can find a movie version of the game, where all the game play was cut out and its just the cutscenes. Runs about 3.5 hours. The same guy did all the Uncharted games.
