man this game is so awesome! i played some more last night and got to the "Fall" part and stopped there. i don't think there has ever been a game that i've actually felt emotions for like this game. it's pretty crazy how a game can do that to you. i think a lot of it is how real the characters are portrayed to be. like the relation between ellie and joel you can see growing, and it just feels so natural and real. and the way that ellie acts just feels so real too, like something a little girl would do and a lot of the little things she says too. just so well done.

i also got pretty damn freaked the f out at a couple parts in the sewers. that whole part was really well done especially the bigger encounter part in the sewers. very well done and i felt flustered as hell trying to do it, but like in a good way not frustrating way.

and holy moly, the sound in this game is simply incredible. i feel every gunshot in my chest when i'm playing, i got my shit turned up LOUD!
Yup, and this is a big reason why I am getting a PS4. I would hate to miss out on the sequels to this game. I am hoping that I can finally get more time with it this weekend since I have been busy with school this week.

What you are experiencing in The Last of Us used to be the core element of the JRPG.

It used to be limited to the JRPG due to technology limitations restricting the presentation to a text based story that could express it in words and music only. Its hard to convey tragedy in character expressions alone when eyes are two pixels.

Modern technology allows for presenting those same core emotional elements that made 16 bit JRPGs timeless in ANY type of game. Why is it not happening? Ask youself why "no other game has had an emotional impact" on you like this.

Games like The Last of Us are not exceptional to me. Its the norm for me. Most other games just suck in comparison by that standard.

1. this still doesn't have anything to do with hating other games.

2. a game does not have to have an emotional impact on me for it to be a good game to me.

For me its cause I have played games where there is a war and you are the hero a billion times. You usually play a super soldier who does not speak and interact much with the NPCs. I have fought hoards of demons and stuff too and never felt any attachment to the demons. That is why this title attaches you to the character. The things you shoot and stab are or were once living people. Some of whom are just trying to survive in the crazy world.

Sadly it doesn't even take billions of dollars and 100 texture artists to deliver what The Last of Us does best. It just takes passion and a writer. Someone not obsessed with how many ways you can customize your gun and how cool it looks when you shoot it. That stuff is meaningless without the intangible core the heart and soul of a game.

Exdeath, I will never see eye to eye with you on JRPG's. I can't stand them anymore. I don't care for their cutesy anime, girls with big eyes and bigger boobs, and the battle systems. But I just stay away from constantly putting those types of games down, and that's where you rub people the wrong way. I think most of us get tired of seeing you constantly in threads of games that you hate, just trashing the games and talking about how horrible "mainstream" stuff is.

With that being said, I do agree that this game is amazing. I wasn't digging it at first, because the combat boiled down to the same as practically every other stealth game out there. Sit and watch for patterns in the route the enemies are taking so you can attack. But once I got past those issues and just starting losing myself in the story, I didn't care anymore. The crappy thing is I have been so busy that I haven't touched it since last week and am only a few hours in. I am hoping to get going on it this weekend.

I'm on my second playthrough so the wife can watch (she likes to watch games with a good story). I just finished Summer again last night and she was balling like a little girl.

These are the modern failures that are NOT helping the genre either.

They absolutely NOT what I mean when I say JRPG.

Anymore is right. Big boobs and flashy battle systems = the trend of catering to lowest common denominator infecting JRPGs. Apparently there is more money in fulfilling pedo cartoon fantasies of middle age men than there is in retaining your long time fans and core franchise values.

JRPGs seem to be following the trend of anime, which is fan service first; nothing else. Anime fighters have that same problem, but a lot of them retain the great fighting game play that really matters, so it is easily forgiven.

One detail I thought this game may have but doesn't and very few games do. I think Max Payne and maybe GTA do? Is stepping in a pool of blood and making footprints. It might be grotesque or whatnot to want that but it is a neat little graphical detail.

After I read that I tried doing it, but I don't see any footprints! :|

One thing I did notice during my second playthrough is that when Joel is injured and you switch weapons he does so much more slowly than when he's at full health. Thought that was a nice touch.

it sucks ass though when you are in a hurry!

last night i finally got the extra holster for the pistols and man, i wish i had gotten that earlier. now i need to get the one for the long range weapons once i get enough gears.

Also nice how when you're crouched by a wall he swaps gear with his off hand no matter which side.

Oh and question but it's a minor spoiler so I'll tag it.

do you ever get the chance to upgrade the M4 rifle you get from the firefly soldiers? Cause I found it extremely weak...so much so that I ended up never using it. I know you never get it until just at the end so even in new game+ you don't have access to it until that point, but could you like save parts and upgrade it somewhere that I missed?

Question for everyone. When you are playing, if you use LPCM surround what dynamic range are you using? Default, Maximum etc? If you use Maximum what type of setup do you have? Cause for me, even though I think I have a rather higher end setup...I really have to turn the volume way, way up to hear some of the background stuff like footsteps, birds chirping in the woods, crickets etc. and even still it seems too quiet. When I set it to default, it seems more natural sounding. I understand what the settings do but was wondering what type of setup someone may need to get the most out of the maximum setting.

I will be honest up front. I do not have a room with sound dampening and whatnot. Perhaps that's what it's require...a dedicated theater room?

i have it on LPCM 5.1 and max dynamic range. i have my volume set either -10 or -7.5 db when i play, and the normal sounds are pretty loud like footsteps and stuff and just talking and actions. but when i shoot the rifle or shotgun, i feel the kick of the gun in my chest. the sound is incredible in this game.

i have a pretty ridiculous setup though. my speakers are known for their dynamics and high efficiency though.

EDIT:

i also LOVE the music in this game. even the intro to the game when it's loading. it is just so fitting and perfect.

I have a Paradigm setup with a Velodyne sub. If I turn the volume way up...like louder than I watch movies even, I don't have an issue with maximum dynamic range. Is that how it's really supposed to be?

I've just got TV speakers lol, but I've got it on LPCM usually and dynamic set to Maximum. Sometimes I plug in my headphones with those same settings and the sound is really amazing. Like said above, when I shoot or someone near me shoots it's very loud, realistically loud, and I can feel the kick, usually scares me lol

i have my setup the same volume i watch movies at and it sounds the same as movies, if not a little louder. so mine is definitely different than yours, but it could also be a lot of other factors i'm guessing like receiver, speakers, etc.

read up a few posts i posted what all the sound setting mean

Run LPCM and Max if you have a really nice HT/dedicated apce
Run LPCM and Normal if decent setup

if leave it on DD and normal for everything else

i ran LPCM max on mine @ reference, gunshots shake the house

Well, yeah...I think I can compensate a bit by turning up the levels a bit in the receiver.

I know what the sound settings mean. I was wondering what setup everyone had who used maximum. I knew about these settings way back years ago when it was first posted for Uncharted.
