I'd have to say hats off to Intel for keeping a socket alive for so long. We've had like what 4 years of this socket?

It really helps for those people who can't stand it when a new cpu comes out you have to grab a new board too.

I bought 939 and thought it would last only to see it phased out a year later. I hope they do the same with the next socket (nehalem?)

Does it have integrated memory controlller this time?

I got a socket 775 system towards the end of it's life but yeah, I gotta say, it's been quite a long run. I also bought a 939 system. It's still a a great machine and I've always felt that 939 was the best socket/platform AMD had. For a while there it was just dominance.

It really isn't quite like that. Yes the slot itself lasted 4 years, but for example you can't use a Core 2 Duo chip in a 845 mobo with LGA 775, you have to change the mobo too.

Yeah but at least most boards could last ~3 series of processors.

like the P965 boards still for the most part can take current cpu's

Yes, BUT...

The old 775 mobos won't take the new 775 chips, and the new 775 mobos won't take the old 775 chips. Really, there are multiple generation of 775.

At least S939 was completely compatible across the board, any 939 chip, any 939 mobo would work.

Actually I'm pretty sure you could stick a 775 P4 in any of the x38 / x48 boards today.

Intel still forced you to upgrade your motherboard.

The older boards had problems with conroe that could run p4-D. A lot of people got pissed off because of this, cuz they tollereted the shitty p4-d over a X2 in hopes for the C2D upgrade.

If you want to talk longivity, hands down S479 on the mobile side.

Thats provided you bought today's boards. Lets see you try to boot up in a E6600 on a BadAXE rev. 1

Can't believe I built my C2D rig back in 2006. With a minor upgrade to 4MB L2 (E6400 -> E6420, used the old proc for another system) and 4 sticks of cheap (~$3/GB) HP DDR2-667, this should last awhile yet.

My old S-754 A64 3700+ just about shat itself when it saw how much the C2D could OC

No, you cannot. See this link

thats just based ontheir guidelines.

their guidelines also say the p45 cant support ddr2 and neither can the x38 or x48.

most g31 / g33 boards support pentium 4 and pentium D for example. my board does not (Because it is made by intel, and those pentium D require different VRMs since they are 125 watt)

Probably not. It would've been nice to upgrade my 965PT to an E8400, but no dice.

Yes, with nehalem they are moving to an IMC.

Coming from Socket 478 (best evar!), LGA775 is not bad IMO. I just hate the fact that the metal bracket scratches and dents my cpu's IHS. Push pins heatsink is neat.

I think a good test for a socket is to see if the company is planning to release a ton of future products on it at least planning to or not. If they don't mention any future release that's at least 2 years into the future I have a feeling it won't last that long. Also I wouldn't buya new socket right away, usually the first version is buggy. Like I remember the first few 939 boards had tons trouble with memory compatibility. Anyhow wait for a revision at least before jumping in, otherwise you may need to switch boards anyways even know you are on the same socket.

BTW, I like socket A a lot, steady upgrades. nice one. then AMD went downhill from there. 754 ... 939 ... AM2 ... AM2+ etc etc.

Well, S-754 was pretty good too. Hell, I stuck with it until (3000+ Venice, X1900XT) until moving over to a C2D.

not really, with the IMC, the 939 & 754 couldn't do ddr2, so to get the preformance of ddr2, AMD had to change sockets or they would still be on ddr. as for AM2 & AM2+, except for a few instances, they ar interchangeable, you can use AM2 in a AM2+ board and visa versa.
