I liked that interface, small and simple. When it went to whatever that next version was (4.x?) after AOL bought them, I thought it started getting bloated. I use Foobar2000 now.

At 5.x they changed the UI back to a hybrid of both. The skin and interface I have is identical to 2.9x which is what I was using before upgrading to 5.x. I only upgraded because of the need to support W7 64-bit.

All WMP for me. It recognizes all my files and works. iTunes is shit only because they force you to convert everything to their own file type. They're a great purchasing/retailer/store system though.

The nice thing about Winamp is that there are input plugins for just about any sound type.

The talk about old players got me to download RealPlayer. I used to like that one. It wasn't too bad once you removed the spyware, and I like the sheep visualization :^D

Noooooo......

I've always used Winamp as a music player, just for its simplicity. The only time I really listen to music on a computer, though, is to give a listen to files that I've downloaded or ripped. I don't use any of the library management, metadata editing or other features. If the company shuts down tomorrow, it will mean little to me. I'll probably continue using it for years.
This.
I'm running v5.63, classic skin. (Their "new" skin functionality did suck, hard. Biggest problem: SLOW, without adding much functionality.)
It does the job quite nicely. Simple to use, good interface, sufficiently versatile, keyboard-friendly.....it does what it needs to do.

At least it's not cloud-based software crap that would stop working when they close up shop. D:

wait

there are people who don't use foobar?

not sure what to say other than, it's far and away the best choice for music
I remember using it once, years ago, because it was said to be really totally awesome.

And here I am, still using Winamp.

Nothing beats Foobar2000. That's the only thing I miss after switching to GNU/Linux. It works in Wine, but that just makes me feel dirty :^D

Learn it; Love it

If the interface is bad, you only have yourself to blame. You can give it any interface you like.

I think I switch to Foobar2000 around 2001?

Winamp was great until they started adding to much crap. I still use foobar2000 to this day.

One of my best friends was in the Army for a number of years. One year, he was on leave, and he convinced me to try ecstasy (a drug he had personally done A LOT of). He gave me a pill, took a couple himself, and we zoned out. After about 15 minutes, I realized that whatever he had given me was having absolutely no effect on me. But he's rolling, and he demands that I put some tunes on Winamp and use the milkdrop plugin to "make pretty shapes dance around." So I did, and sat there, bored, while he watched Windows screensavers from the 90s keep time to some random-ass techno songs.

That was my first and only time trying ecstasy (either I got a bad pill or that drug is fucking stupid), and it may well have been my last time using Winamp (I wasn't really listening to much music on my computer by that point anyway). But I'm glad that Winamp could feature so prominently in one of my memories. It was a great piece of software, and although I haven't touched it in damn near a decade, I'm sorry to see it go. RIP Winamp. You whipped the llama's ass.

Aww.

Count me in as yet another person still using it to this day. As a lightweight player that can handle anything thrown at it (I love my MOD files), it was (and still is) absolutely fantastic.

Oh well. I suppose I got my $10 worth out of it after 15 years or so...

I still use winamp v5.63. It does everything I want it to. I even rediscovered shoutcast radio stations a few months ago.

Don't forget the 20 minute loading time and just various other ways in which itunes sucks.

I installed Foobar, and brought in my layout. My playlists are missing, and the fonts are some kind of fallback, but it still looks good to me. A shame it's proprietary software. I wouldn't mind using it. It's a little glitchy in Wine.

Yep, I switched to foobar2000 a few years ago and haven't looked back. Winamp was very legit back in the day though. But then it was competing against Windows Media Player, so it wasn't exactly a fair fight.

see IMO that looks like crap and is taking up 90% more space than it needs to and is showing a bunch of useless information in the process

i actually think id use WMP if they ever get FLAC support working correctly for the library feature

I could shrink it up to something pretty close to what you have. That's actually why I installed it. I wanted to mimic your setup, but editing the layout was tedious. I was getting graphical glitches that made it harder than I felt like fooling with. I can definitely show most if not all of what you have in a similar space, but I'd have download or write a skin to change the borders.

Mine's a default skin, but everything is configurable. Every window, button, and slider can be changed, moved, or removed, and there's other dropdown boxes and tabbed lists I can add. I like what I have for my purposes. I like lots of data, and quick access to playlists. What I don't have in a tray icon. It would be there if it was Windows. Click that to open the window, and click it again to make it go away. Lots of info, and no clutter.

In 1998, I switched from Winamp to Sonique, because it had a better MP3 decoding engine. The programmer Tony Million was a really cool guy. Apparently Sonique became the #2 most popular MP3 decoder behind Winamp.

In early 2003, I made the switch to Foobar and never looked back.

FIFY. iTunes is the devil.

The devil has the best playlist creation abilities hands down. I was pretty much an iTunes hater until I used it to make a smart playlist for someone. Until I find a program that's more robust here I won't be switching.

I <3 the devil

I still use Winamp; it's been my primary music player since forever.
