The devil has the best playlist creation abilities hands down. I was pretty much an iTunes hater until I used it to make a smart playlist for someone. Until I find a program that's more robust here I won't be switching.

That's usually what I do, but I have a few broad segregated categories by folder, and I make playlists out of them. A few are Ambient, Blues, Jazz, Post Rock, and a few others. I almost always shuffle everything though.

My default media player back in the days. Still remember the mario theme with the equlizer. Althouh ive stopped using it a very long time before it still holds good memory. It wasmt a bad but wmp is getting better. One thing i like about winamp back then were the equalizer whicj i thought i lt to be very good and the music library. After wmp got updated especially with version 10 if im correct. I swtich to wmp.

I remember when I clung to Winamp 2.80 for years and then finally realized how awesome the media library was and updated to the newer version (I think they were on 5 something at that point). I then got Milkdrop and remember using it as a benchmark of sorts when I would upgrade my video card.

The first time I installed it was on my Cyrix 233 with 32MB of RAM. End of an era, but life goes on. I still have it installed, and haven't looked for any visualizers because Milkdrop is so perfect. Guess I'll give Foobar a try in a few years considering I never did enjoy the interface of iTunes, and my "recent" player is Amazon Cloud Player, which IMO sucks compared to Winamp, but I have made so many Amazon purchases it is my goto for purchased music.

it's way too much music, for me at least... when I did that, I found I'd spend half the time hitting "next" over and over again.

I like keeping a couple playlists... instrumental-only music (for when I'm at work), generic Top 40 stuff (for when I'm driving around with friends), and then other playlists depending on my mood (mellow stuff for nighttime, upbeat stuff for working out, etc)

Used it up until i switched to foobar ~ 2 years ago. The only reason i switched was because i like the look of the default interface of foobar (with minor adjustments) compared to winamp.

Well this sucks. I still use winamp on a daily basis, Itunes is a complete piece of shit and I don't even know of another comparable product.

never tried foobar 2000??? I abandoned winamp in the Opteron days.

I remember winamp in its prime and all the backlash it got moving from version 2 to 3 and then to 5 (which was all around the time they were acquired by AOL)

but that was 10-11 years ago, and probably was the last time I legitimately used the software, so I mourned its death then, if anything this news is just a surprise to me that this software had support all this time...

Winamp was good before they started to add all the crap to it, themes and skins. VLC works for me for video and audio along with shoutcast or iheartradio for real time streaming.

lol, I just started using it last year when I switched to Win7 and the new WMP failed to work worth a damn. Mine still looks like the one Printer Bandit posted, and apparently it's not an old version either. Works fine for me.

So it really boils down to personal preference. I liked the skins because you could pick them and they weren't forced down your throat. You only have yourself to blame if you hated the skin. I really liked this one because it is dark and still legible. As much as I liked staring at a CCFL bulb at full brightness in iTunes to sync my iPhone, I always gravitated towards software that let me choose otherwise. I wish this forum was the same way, considering how many times I have seen dark themes on superior SMF software, but come back here for the activity.

I know monitor backlighting is not as bright as the sun, but seriously staring at a light source is staring at a light source...

Some of you guys might like Clementine. It's very popular in GNUland, but I don't think many Win users are aware of it. It has a lot of features, and isn't too heavy.

It looks like it support a folder tree based playlist system. I might try migrating my father to this as this as he has a ton on of playlist which can get very hard to navigate with on winamp

Use it everyday. Here's a screenshot.

With the right input plugin its pure sonic bliss.

At 5.x they changed the UI back to a hybrid of both. The skin and interface I have is identical to 2.9x which is what I was using before upgrading to 5.x. I only upgraded because of the need to support W7 64-bit.

The nice thing about Winamp is that there are input plugins for just about any sound type.
Can you guys or someone please clarify about the 'input plugin' references? Right now I'm assuming you guys meant the 'DSP/Effects' plugins? I believe the actual input plugins are just for decoding the file containers.

i'm still using winamp as well, i may not have been though if it weren't for the 'iZotope Ozone' plugin. because I mostly use it with headphones, not sure if it would have any benefits for a good 2.1 or above actual speaker system. but with a headset or headphones its like magic I've never heard of anything better. Granted it does need to be calibrated for the headset your using.

http://www.winamp.com/plugin/izotope-ozone/79374

some random notes for those who can use it:

the winamp DSP plugins also work with ffdshow's audio output including iZotope

after winamp v2.xx it did change... but if you just skip all the versions till v5.xx, it goes back to something in v2.xx and works well. (for me anyway) i dont know the technical details but v5 was just as efficent for me as v2. and it was even stated somewhere that all the 2x plugins are compatbile with v5, but not v3.

Playlists are where it's at, I have my phone set to auto sync a new playlist from iTunes every morning at 6AM which consists of 5 songs I've never listens to, and 5 songs I've listened to over 50 times. The Smart Playlist creating capabilities of iTunes are uber. I sure as hell don't want to import all my music and just hit shuffle. I have about 50 playlists I've made, and about 15 smart playlists that constantly change. I do think iTunes is missing some smart playlist parameters, but what it has is so much better than anything else I can't really complain too much. I've also added a ton of extra info to my tags. So if I wanted to I could make a playlist of songs featuring Eminem that aren't Eminem songs. It's also really cool to create playlists based off a year, all my music is tagged with the release dates. Maybe tomorrow I'll sync a 1985 smart playlist and revisit my childhood.

In 1998, I switched from Winamp to Sonique, because it had a better MP3 decoding engine. The programmer Tony Million was a really cool guy. Apparently Sonique became the #2 most popular MP3 decoder behind Winamp.

In early 2003, I made the switch to Foobar and never looked back.

Similar for me. I did try sonique 2 in alpha and beta though, until that died off.
I think it was also Sonique that had a plugin, which allowed me to defi e a color which was then replaced by the visualization, globally. So basically my desktop background was a milkdrop output. Those were the days.

Never really liked WinAmp - the UI was always damn ugly. ITunes is worse though, and people use that too....
