the local utility company secretly sprayed a massive amount of herbicide near it's tranmissions lines

The remains of healthy bushes and trees stretch for miles beneath ComEd's North Shore transmission lines, from Northbrook down to Northfield, Wilmette, Glenview, all the way to Skokie.

The dead brush appeared overnight and without warning, after what ComEd sprayed miles of its power-line right of way, beneath those towering transmission lines with an herbicide called Garlon 3.

This.

The property belongs to them so they can do what they want with it to keep the power flowing for our porn torrents.

When is the last time you walked along that right of way to enjoy the trees and bushes? My guess is never so you suck at complaining.

The power goes out because the trees brought a line down, people complain.
The power company takes care of the trees and bushes so there won't be a problem, people complain.

Its a lose lose situation for the power company.

That seems kind of excessive. If it can kill trees that fast I don't know what it can do to the wildlife in that area. It is their land though... maybe they should have cutted the trees instead, that's what they do here, and it usually acts as skidoo trails in the winter so it's win win.

Are you all fucking retarded? It would be one thing if they weed-eated the area. They did not. They sprayed toxic chemicals.

At the very least, citizens deserve to be notified so they can keep their children and pets indoors while this is occurring.

Who says what they sprayed was toxic? We are not plants, we are animals and they own the right of way.

The towers are very tall. There were no trees (and certainly no bushes) that even came close to touching the lines.

The tranmission lines go thorugh a very heavily populated area. If there are fires, a lot of houses are in danger.

Sounds like bad PR, but it's legal and they've got to do it one way or another. Around here, "densely populated areas" with transmission lines tend to make the rights-of-way into parks or nurseries, where the brush clearance is happily taken care of by either the city or the nursery owners just by dint of the land being in use. Maybe these communities need to take it upon themselves to ensure these rights of way are cleared the way they like it, perhaps?

A spray that kills living tissue is therefore toxic to living tissue, whether it is plant or animal tissue is irrelevant.

What bothers me are the yellow trucks spraying mosquito killing chemicals in the Chicago suburbs. They spray toxic chemicals in the evening while we sleep with no prior warning. I always close my windows on those nights if I am lucky to hear the truck go by and the evening is ruined afterwards.

You never went exploring as a kid? We used to play in abandonded oil supply sheds in the woods. I'm in my 20s and I actually got to do fun stuff as a kid. I feel sorry for today's children.

It's like living under power lines.

You will be dead in a matter of years.

I've had to do a fair amount of work under power lines, and it gives me a headache, literally. I wouldn't live anywhere near the things. Under the lines, if you touch something grounded, you can feel the electricity go from your fingers to the grounded object.

no, they have a right of way through it, and can mandate clearances and access to the towers themselves. I have done a lot of work under lines on the right of way over the years.
The latest job was a church and they will use the area under the lines for parking.

Tree limbs MUST be well clear of transmission lines. During high demand conductors heat up and sag. If they sag into trees a fault develops. If they trip off and neighboring circuits take the load and they sag into limbs problems multiply and things can get out of control very quickly. This is what caused the blackout in 2003.

It does not take much to create a phase to phase fault!

50Hz sounds awesome!

I think the main concern here with the widespread use of a herbicide is the fire risk is greatly augmented once the vegetation dries out. Ironically a fire beneath a transmission line will also cause a fault as flames are conductive! :Q

Well if it's over your property that they did then then changes are it's up to you to clean this up to maintain the safety if a cleaning crew doesn't come around in a few days.

The transmission lines are very high. There nothing like the ones in that that video.

But regardless, why couldn't they just cut down the problem trees? Why did they have to resort to total devegetation (trees, bushes, grasses, etc.)?

So they don't have to come back in a few years to check on things and do it again.

You would think they would go the Roman way and simply salt the earth around the area.

Plus it's probably a lot cheaper then getting cutting crews out to clear a lane then a few spraying.

Sadly that was done in our area, massive clear cutting of everything, and a ton of it was on people's property and a lot of nice yard work went away because of it but at least they cleaned up after it.
