Edit: she went on to blow it in the last 25 seconds, managed to tie it 9-9.

Why do Olympic announcements always start with French? (Not just UK).

This has bothered me for decades.

Who gives a crap about French? No one speaks it except France and some fringe ex-colonies.

I believe the most widely used languages are English and Spanish. Is it just snobby politics that got French into it?

It's not you. This opening ceremony sucked hard.
It was slow, boring and the performers looked like they were phoning in their performance.
With the Beijing opening, it was powerful and the performers gave it 100%.

That opening ceremony was pretty pathetic. 1,000+ years of British history, and they focused on modern pop culture and some sort of strange teenage love story. Not sure what that was supposed to convey. I guess they wanted to gloss over several hundred years of British imperialism that would probably piss off their former territories. Apparently more important is a house party? What is so special about a house party? People have been having parties in houses for as long as people have been partying. The ode to British influence on music is definitely important, but really, after the industrial revolution part, the whole thing just seemed to be devoted to pop culture.

And I cannot BELIEVE that NBC didn't show the entire 7/7 memorial piece. That is flat out despicable, and I don't even understand what their motivation for doing that would be.
