You're kidding right? You don't think that NK has ways of preventing this?

Why is this even a question.

Wasn't there some movie where prisoners wore these explosive rings around their neck and if they got a certain distance away from the compound, it would blow up?

IIRC they also have all kinds of pre-indoctrination training prior to competing outside of the country. Something along the lines of "They build these amazing places on the backs of slaves and bury the dead workers under the concrete. Also - there are slums outside of here so don't believe everything you see"

A lot of North Koreans know more about the outside world because South Korean dramas and movies are quite popular (smuggled in), it's just they're afraid of the consequences (ie family being held hostage).

is it just me or is the 400m swimming final not available on the nbc site?

One thing I've always found awesome about the USA is that I can watch a sport like ping pong or badminton and get confused by which team I should be cheering for.

So did I miss the broadcast of the 400m IM? I know the results but I'd still like to see it. Or will it be on later today?

Opening ceremony was at time strange. Why they celebrated the NHS is completely beyond me, it was just bizarre, it's like the US hosting and celebrating social security or medicare, just weird.

Parts of it were good, parts silly. The thing with the girl losing her phone and then going through the decades of music was also bizarre and I had no idea what the point of it was. I stopped watching at that point.

The thing with bond was quite good, though should have been done better; the skydivers should have landed in a small area and run into a shed or something from which the queen and daniel craig could have emerged to further the idea that they jumped.

Total Recall maybe? NK doesn't need those, though, just rifles.

Anyway if an athlete defects from NK his family is FVCKED, including extended family. That is why most won't do it.

Well NBC edited the hell out of it for no good reason, and for some reason many americans don't understand it. Also i tried explaining the NHS thing earlier in this thread.

what is so hard to understand for Americans about the NHS, it's been an important UK institution for 65 years, they just integrated it in the show together with the Great Osmond street hospital. I'm not an American and I understand it, is it that hard to comprehend?

Social Security has been around for 77 years but I doubt that any US opening ceremony would celebrate it.

Should I just watch this on the internet? Watching 6 hours of recorded cycling on NBC is getting old fast. I feel like I am missing all the good stuff.

Speaking of which you know how it would have been better? Matt Lauer and that woman shutting the fvck up in the middle of the sequences. Their comments were like beavis and butthead watching a music video.

I already said what's so weird about it.
you guys really don't get it ...
No, you don't get it. This is not a debate about NHS it's why the hell would you bring it up anyway?! It's totally irrelevant. Most people on SS like it but nobody expects the US to talk about it during a ceremony. Really, nothing else to bring up?

The US swimmer in the 400M is too heavy. The Chinese swimmer who won gold is taller than him but 30 lbs. lighter!

Because it waas fucking retarded. Just like I can tune through my dial and find most of the music playyed uring that paprt of the show, I can find every couple of blocks and find a nurse or doctor, and yet I have zero expepctaation that either would ever make an olympic ceremony.

And that's the problem. Like I said earlier, a lot of the performances "showed" British culture and expected the audience to just "get" the significance. If the NHS really is something worthy of an Olympic performance, then it's important for a reason. What you do is focus on conveying that reason. Plastering "NHS" in the center of the stadium and having some doctors and nurses dance around with kids doesn't do that.

Same story with the house party/status update thing. If it's more significant to the British than it is elsewhere, don't show us a house party, show us the extra significance! The early bits transitioning to the industrial revolution did all of this, as did the dream sequence. I'm not sure why Boyle made the method of delivery shallower as the show went on.

Did he make it shallower or were you just not able to pick up on it? :\
