Phelps should have quit while he was ahead in 2008.

he's still added a medal, matching him all time if I recall. also from what I heard, he was pulling ahead on his part and the new golden boy lost it as the anchor man.

They were talking up the number of medals the USA was expected to earn and I think we are going to be disappointed. Phelps is already a slacker. He is still a good swimmer and athlete of course but he doesn't have that drive to win anymore IMO.

I think a number of smaller countries are going to see more medals with improved Olympics teams. I think bigger countries like China have invested in their Olympic teams (China invested 4.5Bn into their athletics programs for the Olympics)

Meanwhile I read an article the other day about how mostly Olympic athletes are below the poverty line in the USA. How its hard to have a 9 to 5 job when you need to train 12 hours a day and how inflexible the workforce has gotten etc. And I think it shows in the athletes all stressed out etc.

how'd that archery event go for ya.

What happened?

Can someone here give me a protip? Understandably NBC only covers events targeted for their US audience- disgusting amount of swimming.

Are there different coverage I can watch on TV or online? Beijing 2008, spanish channels showed different cool coverage in HD.

I want to see other events showing off different countries- archery, taekwondo, etc.

Your blood is your heritage. Are you a US-born white?

What if you moved to Korea/UK/Australia and worked there for living & ended up settling with family. You acquire their citizenship as well.

Olympic comes on, you wouldn't cheer for USA, your homeland?

Nope, I would root for the country I have become a part of.

It's a celebration of sport/athleticism/human strength probably as much as it is nationalism for some.

Sure, I get that, but if the US is in the event, I want us to win above all. Screw my Polish heritage.

I guess if you come to live in this country and take advantage of it's benefits, why root against it? I guess that's the psychology I will never understand.

Armchair argument from someone who doesn't have the perspective.

Let's say you became a Korean citizen.

I'm SURE you'd magically abandon your American heritage, all your past, your homeland, your upbringing and root for Korea 100%, while facing subtle and/or blatant racism and discrimination from Koreans, similar to minorities in US.

If you're not a minority, don't talk as if you know the experience.

so what country is the most pathetic at the olympics? india? billion people and they barely have more medals in the 100 plus year history of the games than Michael phelps. maybe they should make telemarketing or body hair an olympic sport.

1. I don't know about the aussie poster, but I wouldn't root AGAINST US. I'm a god damn proud motherfvcking Korean-American. I relate more to Americans some ways, and relate to Korean culture in some ways. It doesn't have to be one or the other. This is who I am- both. This applies for millions of immigrants in US as well. I don't believe US makes you abandon all your prior cultures and background. Actually, just the opposite which makes this country great.

[edit]
2. Polish heritage? That's laughable (not being polish, but zero fvcking hardship & discrimination in US, you're WHITE). You haven't and never will experience being a 'real' minority in USA.

I don't get this. You live in America, yet root for the Aussies.

The Aussies? That's the French reaction to the 4x100M swimming relay today btw.

I am not sure where you want to go with that, but I root for both countries. I embrace both cultures. It's not like I can ignore my french heritage, I grew up there, I have my family there, and I lived there for most of my life. I am not rooting against the US, but I rather go for the underdog.

phelps is simple to explain, he's lost that eye of the tiger. he needs to go train in a grungy gym with apollo creed and the other low lifes. he's been living too high on the hog the last 4 years.

Lol are we the only country in the world with people who actively root against their own country?

(and I'm talking about folks who were born or grew up here)

I don't root against Canadian athletes but there are some people from other countries I'd rather see win in some events.

It's in Swedish and I'm not sure if it's available for the US, but it covers a lot. For free, ofc.

You guys see a trend? haha. I'm all for USA gold medals but we went into this just expecting to be handed #1 on a platter like everything else these days. Lets see how that philosophy works in an actual competition.

A different American winning gold that was supposed to? The current champ falling short, but not exactly eliminating the US from anything.....

What are you trying to prove again?

It was surprising to see us lose the 4 x 100. Phelps actually gave us a huge lead and Lochte lost it on the last leg. I think the French got tired of seeing the Phelps fireball hair gif over and over after the win in 2008.

meh. its the Olympics. just because you are the favorite does not mean you are going to win.

only gold anyone SHOULD expect is in basketball. even then its getting harder every time.
