witch is why they went to a full second when there was maybe 1/4th a second left. it really screwed that girl over.

Iv got a friend who timed it, there was between .2 and .1 seconds left when the clock reset to a full second.

It was my understanding they gave her a yellow card for not leaving the piste which would make it impossible for her to win even if the decision were over turned.

She wouldn't have got a yellow IF they didn't fuck up in the first place.

Good thing I just read the olympic swimming results…now I don’t have to give @nbc any ratings tonight. #NBCFail

so what happened?

In a nutshell:

Semifinal goes into sudden death. Coin flip happens giving priority to Korean fencer. Single touch by either is a win. Double touch (both at same time), is a "tie" and you keep going. No touch results in fencer with priority winning.

German fencer goes very aggressive and lots of double touches result. With one second left, the clock doesn't seem to start or starts late (it's a manual start by someone) and German fencer gets in FOUR attacks/engagements (basically impossible in one second) and hits on the fourth.

Korea appeals, loses, goes to bronze medal match and loses.

Korea appeals, loses the first appeal, does a written appeal, and loses that as well. The korean fencer is then given a yellow card for not leaving the strip and it probably would have been a black card had she not left when she had.

So the fighter who was better (the one who actually managed to land a touch) would have lost because of a coin flip? Does anyone else think that result sounds even worse than what happened?

The issue is that the fencer who did eventually land a touch was able to because the clock was fucked up. She was given entirely too much time and basically ran out of time. See this video: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Gjmz-zCSTXw where she lands the hit after one second is over.

As far as her staying on the strip, it looks like the common thing is to stay there as a sign that you are still appealing. If you leave that you essentially agree with the decision if it's against you.
