I'm glad this thread has become a geography lesson. Look, the fact of the matter is we care more about stuff in our backyard. That's basic human instinct. I'm not saying that knowing where Tunisia is isn't important, but if I'm given an unlabeled map of the United States, a country that I've lived in my entire life, I give myself about a 40% chance of getting all the states in the right place (the whole Virginia, West Virginia, North Carolina, South Carolina area always gets me, and I get Vermont and New Hampshire switched half the time). And most of my friends consider me to be fairly knowledgeable about geography. I know that Tunisia is in Africa, but that's about the extent of it. Is knowing where Tunisia is more important than knowing the Canadian provinces or the Mexican states (I know 8 and 2 of those respectively)? I'm more likely to end up in Canada or Mexico than Tunisia....

Basic geography is good knowledge to have, but let's not act like everyone should know every place on the globe. Know the shit that's close to you and carry a smartphone so you can Google the shit you're unsure of.

lol @ people trying to defend their position on not knowing where Tunisia is. Who cares? But honestly you can't say they haven't been in the news lately or even in a big way, the Arab Spring jump started there.

What is this Arab Spring you speak of?

Couldnt sleep last night so I turned the TV back on, was like 1 AM and they were doing the recap. They were showing the kayaking, and that looked like so much fun. one or two teams in the doubles was comprised of two guys who compete in singles but decided to do doubles as well for the fun of it, and they werent half bad for never competing with each other before.

In other news I was just watching the local news on the nbc station, and they went into full spoiler mode, phelps, gymnastics, medal break downs, anything the usa did today they just ruined. people are bitching at them on their facebook page. lol

how is not giving a shit about Tunisia 'ignorance'? Is there a list of countries that EVERYONE should know about? who maintains this list???

Let's not confuse matters spacejamz. You (or others) not knowing where Tunisia is located, is not the same as you "not giving a shit" about it. You call it "not giving a shit" as way to cover your ignorance. What ever happened to just saying you don't know the answer to something? I don't know how to rebuild an engine. It's not because I don't "give a shit" about it.

Sorry first whiff of the protests in the Middle East that caught mainstream media was Egypt (because people have actually heard of that place)....

the stuff in Tunisia was just a blur on page, not front page headline stuff day after day like Egypt.

Anyway, I am done with this topic...back to the Olypmics!!!!

News in the States is definitely fucked.

Please create another thread about this subject if you want to continue this discussion....we have sidetracked it long enough...

wrong, tunisia hit first. it just happened to blow up blow up in our media when it hit Egypt as they happen to be one of our bigger allies. I remember reading about the protests over the man who set himself ablaze in protest.

didn't beat the spread, Tunisia has a pretty solidly consistent team they just couldn't deal with the USA though. USA was really moving the ball well, if they can keep that up no one will touch them.

Don't you guys basically have 50 square miles of land for every citizen? They couldn't spare a few meters of frozen tundra for you to have a spot to sculpt igloos or wrestle wolverines or whatever it is that Canadians do in their backyards? For shame...

that sucks. I lived in a apartment for a year. I will never do that again (well not until the kids are gone and im old).

I love having a backyard. a place for the kids to play, to relax, i enjoy taking care of the yard.

on a nice evening sitting out with friends around a fire drinking beer is one of my favorite things.

Land is super duper expensive in these parts. If I wanted to live in Nunavut or something, I'm sure I could get miles of frozen wasteland for me and my sled dogs, but a man can only eat so much blubber. :\

We have a house, with a tiny front yard and no back yard. It's very expensive to have a back yard around here unfortunately. I don't plan on having kids though; if I did I would definitely want to leave them out free range in the back, but as it is, no back yard is not that big a deal for me.

It's bullshit and NBCs handling of these Olympics is atrocious. I'm really considering cutting my support for NBC all together, not watching the shows they put out or anything.

Yeah - its really really bad

AP Mobile sends out push notifications informing people of the olympics in real time.

Fuckers told me the Phelps results at 1pm, I won't be able to watch it until tonight at 11pm. It's not like there's any warning, phone vibrates, look at phone, oh look there's the update. At least put spoiler tags on it, fuckers.
