<< great movie in almost all respects:
great casting
great acting
great scene design
great special effects
but my gripe: 1 hour too long.
now i haven't read the book, so I don't know if certain events will become important later in the trilogy, but for example, why did frodo and his funky bunch have to visit that forest with the canoes? that scene seemed to have nothing to do with the story, other than the fact that it showed another person who was able to resist the ring. that scene took up a good chunk of time, which prevented me from evacuating my bladder about 30 minutes sooner.
since i'm mentioning restroom breaks, the movie seriously needed an intermission.
also, seeing how this is a movie, and not a line-by-line dramatization of the text, couldn't we have skipped the mine scene and have gandalf go away during some other fight?
i guess all i'm saying is that the movie dragged a bit, and for no apparent reason other than to stay true to the text.
overall i was very impressed, and i'll definitely watch the next two movies. but it did draaaag for me. >>
Uhm, if you haven't read the story I'm wondering why you think the film dragged..."to stay true to the text". I understand your point of view, but I think it's largely due to the film being cut down to fit under 3 hours. I think the Director's Cut DVD will actually be a BETTER film than what's currently in the theatres because the format will allow PJ to release the COMPLETE first book. There are reasons for the things that happen in the film (Arwen is the daughter of Elrond...leader of the council...and she is Aragorn's love interest), but because PJ couldn't expect people to sit in theatres for 4 hours (I won't even mention how much they would lose on daily showings in theatres) so cuts were made to fit it under the 3 hour max.
The 4 hour DVD will be one of the greatest films ever.
