WOW folks...check this out...LOTR: FOTR is now number 1 on IMDB's top 250, even knocking Godfather, Shawshank Redemption, and Schindler's List from the top spots!

What a sham imdb is sometimes. I wonder if there's a few script kiddy fanboys inflating the ratings.

Very good movie, I will be going again in a day or two.

I went with a friend who never read the book but was eager to see the movie.
It was very true to the book but, of course, left out extreme detail.

Like mitharel (sp?) metal, Bilbo's blade that glows blue and things such as the elven wood. So my friend was full of questions during and after the movie. But regardless of that, it was still great if you have never read a word of the book.

If you have read them, its ignites a driving desire to pick the books up... again.

But it says:
note: for this top 250, only votes from regular voters are considered.

Which I think means registered users who rate movies on a normal basis can only have their votes counted to the top 250?

and this is the formula for top 250, which explains why on the top 250 page it has a 9.1 rating but on it's individual page it has a 9.6 rating:

weighted rank (WR) = (v ÷ (v+m)) × R + (m ÷ (v+m)) × C

where:
R = average for the movie (mean) = (Rating)
v = number of votes for the movie = (votes)
m = minimum votes required to be listed in the top 250 (currently 1250)
C = the mean vote across the whole report (currently 6.9)

<< EDIT:I just don't think it was the best fantasy film ever made, or even the best film of this year. So, what was the best fantasy movie ever made in your opinion? >>

Probably Princess Mononoke.

What? IMO, it's much better than those films.

I think this movie's ending was kinda disappointing to the people who didn't go into it expecting it to be just the beginning of a trilogy. A couple of people I saw the movie with said at the end, "OK, why don't you just NOT destroy the ring then?" and I had to explain it to them. The general response was, "Uhh, I don't think I can do another 6 hours." Hehehe.

But I liked it.

I enjoyed it for the most part. Only a few things bothered me. But, first what I did enjoy. I think it was condensed rather well. The three hours didn't seem to be too long and the movie got most of the goodies from the book.

I loved the little things in the movie, like when the Hobbits first hid from a Ringwraith and the insects came out of ground. I loved seeing Legalos walk on the snow, like in the book, while the rest had to go thru it.

And, as cheesy as it sounds, I love the design of the One Ring. It is so simple but perhaps a very elegant ring.

Few things I didn't like:

I thought the scene in the begining during the war, Sauron looked kinda cheesy in his outfit. Knew he was suppose to look like the essence of Evil, but just thought his outfit was kinda lame.

I liked how Gladariel was 'iffy' in her demeanor, but when she tested herself with the Ring it looked kinda goofy. I get the point that the director was trying to take but just the special effects at that point looked bad in my opinion.

Also, why did Arwen have to save Frodo instead of Glorfindal? It is not like they would have saved any time in the movie by having some dude save them. But I guess they had to give Liv Tyler some role and introduce some love story.

Also, what about Aragorn's sword? In the book he carried the broken hilt and had it repaired in Rivendell but they kinda leave that out, even though they spent the screen time showing the broken blade. If they show the broken blade how hard would have it been not to show the hilt on the alter and have Aragorn carry it then before they leave Rivendell have Aragorn recieve the sword made anew.

The Moria thing kinda confused me. In the book Gandalf wanted to go thru Moria but Strider did not want to and wanted to try the mountain pass first. In the film Gandalf did not want to yet Boromir (I think wanted to). It would have not added any film time what-so-ever to have the correct character say the correct thing thing that was in the book. And Gilmail thought that everything was peachy keen in Moria yet in the book he was unsure of the state of Moria; dwarves went there and were not heard from again. It would have been very simple and not have added any length to the film by having the Dwarf to feel unsure about the state of Moria instead of expecting a party when they show up.

But, besides that, I loved the movie, going to have to watch it again this weekend.

Well, that explains it. I did not care very much for your cartoon - certainly not as best fantasy ever.

And I think we got a glimpse of Bill the pony on the road . . . it certainly was not developed . . . and Sam's saying goodye to Bill could be taken a number of ways in the movie . . . it is such a itty bitty scene (so maybe he loved animals - so what; I'm sure more is in the Director's cut).

I don't understand why so many were confused about the mines of Moria. Both Gandalf and Saruman - being Wizards and "in tune" with Middle Earth - realized that the Dwarves had delved too deep to awake an ancient evil. Gimli was just unaware and was looking forward to meet his cousin. Gandalf was hoping to sneak through without meeting the Evil and their other paths were blocked.

Ok time to make everyone on these forums hate me, I didnt like the movie at all really. Over dramatization = true. Panning around/viewing scenery for like 10000000 years = true. Camera action in the beginning of the movie (for the fight scenes) was shaky at best i felt like i was watching Saving Private Ryan without the cool war action aspect. i went with 2 friends and 1 friend loved the movie and was thoroughly entertained. My friend & I on the other hand entertained ourselves by making fun of some of the aspects of the movie that were not very well done. For example, the thumping tile-like sound when they are running across the grass. O and he also showed me how his wrist makes a funny sound every time he bends it and we discussed counter-strike shots we had made and extreme cases of ownage.

I too disliked the camera shaking.....ala Gladiator

This might be viewed by some as "revolutionary filming technique" but to me it's just cheap camera trick. Other than that, movies was still entertaining

I just got back from seeing it as well. I had sped through the FOTR since I had to finish it by the time I sqw the movie, so I did miss a few things, but not enough to make any real impact.

My impression is: This movie is simply incredible. In some ways it is even better than the books, mostly in displaying the awesome power of the battles, or the balrog (my favorite part of the film was seeing the balrog for the first time; I was completely blown away.) I am in awe. The special effects are simply gorgeous; for the most part the acting is brilliant. IMHO, I think the guy who played Frodo was a bit too femmy, but thats just MO. Also, I didn't like having Agent Smith as the elf. He's just too evil a person to play such a benevolent character. Elves are not supposed to sneer when discussing the beauty of their land. Otherwise it was perfect.

The humor was sparse and did not detract from the movie at all. Rather it added to the drama. Very artfully done.

Oh yes, and the horse chase scene with the Black Riders was absolutely fabulous. Even though I dont like horses, I loved that part. When the Black Riders almost catch them, and she tells the horse to hutty up, and he starts to sprint harder; I know exactly what that feels like! I run XC, and I know what it feels like to be giving 110%, and then have to give another 10% just to win. That is exactly the feeling they conveyed with that scene. Simply beautiful.

I really dont what to say, other than: if you havent seen this yet, you will not be disappointed! (BTW, just so you know, I thought the books were "good," but I am not an obsessive fanboy. So this is the review of a fairly impartial viewer.)

Another thing I really like is how the there was a loud bass hit when the ring was dropped, and when Bilbo dropped it on the floor it didn't bounce... it just stuck to the floor as if it weighed over a ton.

<< And who gives a care as to Christopher Tolkein's opinion. IMO, he couldn't hold a candle to his father's writing. Whatever he wrote in the Silmirilion was downright boring. He is not the Master Storyteller his father was. >>

Woah there pickle, J.R.R wrote The Silmarillion. (Christopher Tolkien is credited as the editor)

well, I finally saw it yesterday, so I will add my humble review here.

The movie was fabulous, without a doubt the best so far this year. Like some ppl, I was a bit dispointed at the amount of detail left out, however I shouldn't complain about that, since its not actually possible to fit it all in, unless the movie was 8 hrs long.

The opening battle was simply breathtaking! Incredible!!! not only did the show this hugely massive battle, but everything was as it should be. I mean, did anyone see the elves? Their armour was golden and organice, like in the form of leaves.that is so elvish! They are so well organized and.......simply wow.

The scenery...amazing.....almost excatly as it should be. The Moria sequence was ....WOW......that blarog made my skin crawl..

now the negative.
Unfortunately, to me it seemed as though I was watching it in fast forward sometimes and slow motion sometimes...I think the pacing of the action needs to be a bit better.

Also, I was unfortunat enough to sit in close proximity to some fvcking jackasses, which could not stop being little dip sh!ts throughout the movie. Me and friend were gonna almost kick their ass :|

overall, great movie......I should go see it again on the big screen.

As others have mentioned the interaction between Gimli and Legolas does not really pick up until the second book, so everyone who was disappointed by that in FOTR may want to reserve judgement until TTT next year.

I didn't say otherwise, Took.

His writing - as the editor - is dry and boring. He did have to rewrite some of his father's notes from JRR's scribbled handwriting.

My WHOLE point was that HIS opinion doesn't matter any more than . . . well, maybe not yours . . . just about anyone's.

My GUESS is that JRR would loved the movie and been happy to see his life work in such a good adaptation.

Everyone who did not like FOTR the first time around might want to give it another shot--supposedly it is much better the second time around. I was shocked by how many people from Tolkien fan forums felt unsatisfied by the film, but apparently many have changed their minds after a second viewing.

CAPAlert reviews LOTR

LMFAO These guys are always good for a laugh. Their conclusion:

"This movie is likely another maneuver to capitalize on the new found infatuation of visually oriented youth with bright and dazzling display of the occult, witchcraft and evil."

--AND--

"After more than 500 movies I suspect I can say with credibility that any of the imagery of evil you have seen before now does not match the evil in The Lord of the Rings: The Fellowship of the Ring."

So let me get this straight...FOTR is the most stunning depiction of evil on film EVER? Cool.

What? No points off for Sex/Homosexuality?? Hehe...I guess they weren't looking hard enough into Sam and Frodo's evil homoerotic relationship. I'll be sure to email them about this oversight.

<< That part confused me too. I was wondering why they even made a reference to Bill at his departure if he was never introduced in Bree. To somebody who didn't read the books, that scene had almost no poignancy. >>

I've read elsewhere that they did in fact film Sam getting Bill in Bree, but it was editted out...a Director's Cut will likely put this scene - and hopefully several other ones - back in the film.
