Who is it?
Metallica has dominated from my generation to this current one. Which band is going to take over?

You gotta define dominate but Godsmack was my impression of the newer sounding Metallica in the 2000s but obviously they have been around for a while now.

Considering rock and metal aren't popular like they used to be, I'd say there isn't one.

There's tons of great metal out there, with an insane amount of diversity. It's that 98% is not from the US.

Metallica hasn't dominated anything in more that 20 years.
Are you kidding? They're the grand masters of washed out hacks.

Which metal bands can fill an entire stadium? (not necessarily the best, but most popular.)

Slipknot maybe.

The metal bands I listen to are definitely not in the Metallica league, but I also guess that the entire scene is being more diversified and it's not "cool" to be fan of a popular band.

My opinion, the two best metal bands out there today are Alter Bridge and Volbeat. If you don't know them you definitely should check them out.

Saw Volbeat live in Copenhagen before their first album release. It was a blast

Perhaps I am a little behind, but Fine Young Cannibals are the Metallica of my generation. New way forever!

There isn't another band like Metallica, but Tool, Nirvana, and Pantera are in the discussion. Out of those, Tool comes closest in sales+influence+quality+longevity, though Nirvana might have done so if Kurt had lived. Gonna be 20 years this April.

meh, IMO Metallica hasn't dominated since that album where they cut their hair. And let's not forget all that great publicity that Lars brought them over napster.

Successor? tough to say, since all the rock radio stations are going the way of the dodo in our area (down to 1, and another barely), I don't get much exposure to any new hard rock / metal.

I watching this thread for leads!

Linkin Park or Avenged Sevenfold would be the closest, I think. They still pale in comparison to the impact of early Metallica, but they're the closest.
Foo Fighters.....I dunno. You can't swing a cat without hitting Dave Grohl. They rock, but it feels like he's just the poster child for rock more than actual earth shaking impact.

Rock just isn't the main thing going these days. Rock On The Range is a pretty good sized festival. The main stage headliners for each of the three days are GnR, Avenged Sevenfold, and Kid Rock.
Compare that to the '91 Monsters Of Rock Tour....AC/DC, Metallica, Motley Crue, Pantera, Queensryche, and The Black Crowes.

I always thought Godsmack took a lot of cues from Metallica.
