I cannot really get excited abour this until we have some actual price info. They announced these thing way too early, but they needed to justify their dumb Win 8 interface, so....

As far as the keyboard cover, it looks cool IMO. I am not sure how much I would use it, but if it is reasonably priced it is a nice option to have. I sometimes plug a USB keboard/mouse into my Acer tab to RDP to my work computers, it works really well, beats trying to use the onscreen keyboard.

Personally, I am extremely excited for the Surface.

I have heard a lot of complaints from people saying Windows 8 sucks and that the interface is stupid and will never work. I believe that is because they are trying to use Windows 8 like they did Windows 7/Vista/XP/Me/98/95. Everyone knows how hard it is to break habits, and that list of OS's spans almost 20 years. That's a big-ass habit. But Windows 8 is so different, and if you use it correctly, it's a joy. I personally love it, even on a non-touchscreen desktop, because I know how to use keyboard-shortcuts. Most of your average PC users rely on their mouse though, and that experience is dreadful on Windows 8. Too much precision is needed to navigate to the corners. Even if you plow your cursor to the corner in a Viking fashion, you still have to click and move your mouse correctly to get the Start menu up. But, if you press your Windows key, BAM... big and pretty tiles elegantly lay themselves out across your screen, allowing you to very quickly chose a program to open up without much mouse agility needed. Less mouse agility = happy people.

And just as a side note, corporations are going to get these Surface tablets by the thousands. The Surface will play well with the corporate infrastructure, unlike the iPad (by the way, I don't even mention Android tablets, because they are horrid. I love Google, and I love the concepts of Open Source with Android, and at one point I even loved Android, but it's interface is childish and not polished).

More than likely, I will be going with the Pro version to get the extra options like the USB 3.0 and full HD resolution, along with the best extra option: full-blown Windows.

But I believe what I am most excited about is what looks to be a usable merger of a tablet and a laptop. Being a Software Engineer, I take pride in my gadgets, and I can say that I have tried every option possible to use my iPad as a device that I can use to develop with. Even with a bluetooth keyboard hooked up to the iPad, you still have the problem of not having development apps available. While there are a few cloud-based development web apps out there (like c9.io), they don't work in webkit browsers. So, in order to develop "on-the-go" efficiently, I still have to carry a laptop with me. Sure, I could VPN into a remote computer and get the "desktop experience" on my iPad, but trust me, it's not a desktop experience. It's an "oh damn, I need to reboot a server" experience.

On the flip-side of development, there are those 15 minute breaks where I want to browse Google News or check up on the latest Football stats. In those situations, you can't beat the tablet. It's far to easy to flip through websites with multi-touch than it is trying to maneuver around with a touchpad on a laptop that you have balanced on your knees, or flipped sideways in a 90-degree fashion so you can lay down and still see the screen, or taking up 60% of your small two-person table at your favorite fast food joint.

So, with these keyboard covers that the Surface can use, along with the much more stable-looking stand (the iPad stand-cover-conversion works, but don't tap that iPad too hard while it's standing up!), swapping back and forth between "laptop mode" and "tablet mode" looks to be effortless.

Then, you have the built-in pen and palm-detection for writing, with the rumored art-friendly touchscreen, now turning your Surface into a full-blown drawing tablet. Imagine how quickly you could manipulate layers in Photoshop with that. This also would make taking pad-and-pencil to meetings a thing of the past (if the pen works as intended on the Surface). Don't forget, while your writing your notes during your meeting, all of a sudden you need a laptop. Flip your cover around, pop out your stand... BOOM. Laptop.

Maybe I have my hopes set too high. I'm not sure. I will really only know when I'm able to put my hands on one at a store. But, with the option of a full-blown OS paired with a device that is a tablet and a laptop, that is easily switchable between "the modes", and has a normal USB 3.0 port, SD card port, HDMI port for my dual-monitor mode, and is ridiculously portable? I'm currently sold.

Not exactly. He said computers are generally in that price range:

We haven't announced pricing. I think we have a very competitive product from the features perspective. ...

I think most people would tell you that the iPad is not a superexpensive device. ... (When) people offer cheaper, they do less. They look less good, they're chintzier, they're cheaper.

If you say to somebody, would you use one of the 7-inch tablets, would somebody ever use a Kindle (Kindle Fire, $199) to do their homework? The answer is no; you never would. It's just not a good enough product. It doesn't mean you might not read a book on it....

If you look at the bulk of the PC market, it would run between, say, probably $300 to about $700 or $800. That's the sweet spot.

I have a source that tells me there will be a Microsoft popup store at International Mall in Tampa, FL somewhere near the Starbucks and SonyStyle store. I'm not sure if the source is trustworthy, but this mall does have both an Apple store and a Sony store, so it's plausible.

Most of my family and I are overwhelmed by the number of Android and Apple devices that we own.

I'm sorry to say but unless MS can bring something truly revolutionary, there isn't enough space left for yet another tablet/toy with a new OS.

I think they're amazing but won't be getting either because the first wave of products will be good not great, it will be the 3rd gen tablets that'll be the truly amazing ones

Which by then will be better priced and more efficient designs (especially when Haswell comes along )

We all love tech gadgets and always want the latest but waiting is key!

There is a full fledged Microsoft store at Oak Brook Mall in the suburbs of Chicago. It is twice the size of the Apple Store. So I doubt these popup stores are just rumors.

I have to say that youtube ad is cringe-inducing. MS really doesn't know how to advertise.

I'm not a fan of bass heavy ads either, which is why I disliked the original Surface promo. This one is a bit better and gives off a highschool musical type of vibe, I kinda like it.

It's not a bad ad. It's well shot and has a decent concept behind it. The only thing I don't like about it is that it tries too hard. It's just screaming that this product is hip and trendy and doesn't really say anything about why you need this product or how it could be useful to you.

In order to understand what this is about, you already need to have a good understanding of what a tablet is. This isn't going to do anything to get people to buy the product if they aren't already interested or aware of it and predisposed to buy it.

What I'm trying to say is that this is the wrong ad for this product.

im pretty excited for the pro, but was wondering what are the chances of android being ported to the RT? If i could dual boot android and windows 8 on this im 100% in for whatever they wanna charge for it.

Either way if they finally figured out how to make a touchpad, im probably gonna sell my macbook air and get a surface pro. How pathetic is it that PC touchpads are so bad that that was ultimately my reason for getting a macbook air over a ultrabook?

EDIT: The surface pro is essentially a windows 8 ultrabook with and ivb processor right? So it would be able to handle anything a similar ivb ultrabook can do as far as games go? Wouldnt mind to be able to play all (most) of my steam games on this thing. Please be under $1000.....

Surface RT starting at $499:

http://www.neowin.net/news/microsoft-surface-price-revealed-starts-at-499

The actual link to the Microsoft store was working for me at one point this morning but at the moment, is down again.

At that price it's going to be a total failure. it's more than double the cost of the Nexus 7, has an inferior display, and has limited app support at launch. Not to mention it is completely outclassed by the iPad 3 in terms of display and application support for the same price.

This needed to be no more than $300 to have a shot. Based on this absurd pricing the Pro model will be $1k if not even more.

Ironically Acer looks to have put out a more competitive Windows tablet than Microsoft themselves.

Hasn't, well, everything Apple has ever made, proven that many consumers of these types of devices are not price-sensitive?

I personally am price-sensitive, but the Surface is the first tablet-like device I've actually found myself interested in.

The touchpad being a reason for getting the MacBook isn't too crazy when there aren't any alternatives.

I don't have a spec sheet in front of me, but I think an ulltrabook is more powerful.
