Went to MS store tonight and my wife fell in love with it after 5 mins so got her one. She liked the hard type cover instead of the touch one and it actually feels pretty comfy on your lap just like a laptop.

As far as the tablet itself this thing is a productivity workhorse. She got her work and personal email/calendar on it and I must say both apps are very well designed. For what she uses a PC for (mail, calendar, office, web) it is perfect.

Also got to play with the Asus Vivo RT and when it comes to build quality Surface wins hands down.

Wonder how fast this tablet will be after three months and 100 windows security updates?

None of that stuff should slow the computer down, it's when you install craplets that load on startup (not allowed) and rapidly fill up space on a mechanical hard drive (doesn't exist) and file fragmentation (doesn't matter with flash chips) that actually contributes to slowness.

Just got back from best buy, and it's funny how I completely embarassed the MS rep there... First, the 'virtual keyboard' didn't want to come up when I entered a blank empty field. Thus, forcing the him to click on the keyboard icon on the bottom right. Then, because there is no internet, web pages kept not working.

He later on blamed Best Buy for not having it shown in the best possible light; how they always had problems with Best Buy throughout the country. Meanwhile, people are still playing around with the iPad 3

The typical x86 virus will not work on RT. First of all, you have a different processor that cannot even run the traditional x86 applications. There is also a policy of no active-x or any browser plugins allowed. Only Metro apps are allowed on RT, and they are all from the Microsoft store. Even if there is a rogue app, the OS and apps are supposed to be sandboxed from on another. As RT tablets were just introduced, I doubt there is anybody even attempting anything malicious as there just is not enough users on that platform yet to make it worthwhile to them. So right now, I suspect there will hardly be any security updates at all.

Umm BBY is not selling the Surface so I have no idea what you were showing the MS rep.

Well I did see some type of demo unit at best buy the other night, he may be referring to this. However I don't know if it was windows 8 or RT. I do remember that it was on some type of ASUS tablet and laptop.

Sorry I know this is a surface thread, but I saw the Lenovo unit, which had an i5 running in it. I wasn't being a dick, it just happened. I needed to see how consistent the tablet was, and how intuitive the OS was. Since we will be the adopters if this new system, it's pretty important we know as much as we can about the OS. So there's a bug in the system.

I wasn't trying to embarrass him, he was showings things. Just didn't work. I told him I wanted the active pen technology, so pro I probably what I'm going to get.

The Lenovo Yoga is absolutely nothing like the Surface so it's like comparing apples and oranges. That's like saying all Android tablets are garbage because you once played with one and the touchscreen sucked.

Can someone here tell me the difference between the Microsoft Surface and tablets from other manufacturers? Is the Surface Microsoft's own tablet or is it a different category? All these Windows 8 products are confusing.

I got a Surface tonight and I'm really liking it. I was going to spend the extra $20 for the cyan keyboard but it was out of stock so I just got the black touch cover. The type cover actually works really well when I was trying it out in store though. However, it feels a bit weird when you fold it back and just use the Surface as a tablet. The touch covers feels perfectly fine when folded back behind the tablet.

There are ARM tablets that run on Windows RT and x86 based tablets that run Windows 8. Here are the differences between RT and 8: http://www.winsupersite.com/article/windows8/choose-windows-8-windows-rt-144535

The Surface is a Windows RT tablet made (well designed/financed) by Microsoft. There are two other WinRT tablets available now I believe, but the Surface is sort of a reference design. It's a new form factor so it's understandable that Microsoft wanted at least one good WinRT tablet at launch.

I see. So this Surface from Microsoft may have a limited run? I mean, are they going to get into the hardware tablet business as well?

oh dear me, dear dear

Just seen the new Surface advert. My god, what is it with some companys marketing, why is it that Apple can hire the correct firm but others can't.

No mention of what it can do, if I didn't already know what the surface was I'd be thinking what is this?

And what does slapping the cover shut like they was playing drums have to do with anything.

Been running mine since yesterday morning and so far I'd give it a 9/10. Very slick, smooth interface that did take a little getting used too.

OS 8/10. A little tricky at first but easy to figure out. Simple setup right out of the box. I actually had my 9year old daughter set the entire thing up while I drove. Lol

Display 9/10 watched a couple movies last night.

Sound 7/10 can't expect much out of a tablet. Wasn't 'tin-e' sounding like my iPad was so I was happy.

Connectivity 10/10 network speed is amazing and consistent, Bluetooth works flawlessly.

Hardware 8/10 speed Is excellent and very snappy. Cameras are very basic. Overall size is great, fits better than 10.1 if that makes sense. Don't care much for the large bezel but its no biggie, it give a place to hold the device without smudging the screen.
Stock keyboard works well, I've sent many emails already. Weight of the device was a little disappointing, its a bit much for my young kids to lug around. SD slot is perfect along with an actual usb port..

Software 10/10 simple reason for 10. Office pre installed and will be free. Excel is a must have for me. IE 10 is slick, fast and very userfriendly. Skydrive is a killer app of course.

Appstore 7/10 still early on so not everything available yet. Surprisingly Netflix was already along with a few other well known apps.

I'll quit rambling now. Can't wait for the full OS version on a Samsung tablet.

You think consumers are going to differentiate between different kinds of Windows tablets ?

And the issues he brought up, why would they be different on a Surface ? They wouldn't be.

btw, your example about Android is correct. That is exactly the way consumers react to a bad experience.
