I've always loved monopoly but dreaded the long time it took to play...
So i guess i was playing wrong:

The board game Monopoly may be the closest the average Joe gets to becoming a real estate mogul – but have you been playing it wrong your entire life?
A 2011 blog post that has gone viral on Twitter details a sometimes-overlooked rule in the famous game, according to Buzzfeed.
If a player chooses not to buy a property after landing on it, instead of his or her turn ending, the property goes up for auction.
“If you do not wish to buy the property, the Banker sells it at auction to the highest bidder,” the Monopoly rules state. “The buyer pays the Bank the amount of the bid in cash and receives the Title Deed card for that property.”
Without observing the rule, Monopoly players can find themselves “suffering long action-free periods in which [they] endlessly circle the board in search of the streets they need to complete a set,” a blogger on Critical Miss wrote.
A set of properties is needed to build houses and hotels on spaces.
Sending unwanted properties to auction speeds up the game.

But looks like some of my buddies play like this thinking they were unique.

Everybody knows this. It is written right in the rulebook.

Oh, and BTW, you do not get anything for landing on Free Parking.

Pretty pointless article...if you have been playing the game proper;y and follow this rule, it eliminates the long periods of circling the board the article mentions.

Oh and regarding free parking, we play with a modified rule. Anytime, you draw a chance. community chest and have to pay some sort of fine/fee (this includes landing on luxury tax), it goes into a special pool. Anyone who lands on free parking gets this money.

Wow, I've never played it like this!

I do pay fees to the free parking pool and seed it with $500 when cleared.

Monopoly allows for people to add/subtract house rules. If you play any virtual form, it now lets you edit the more used "house rules"

Such as:

What happens when on free parking?
Build even?
Limited number of house/hotels or not?
Auction if no one buys or not?
Go around 1 time before allowing to buy.
Etc.

That's how we always played too.

There's a whole section of the official rules that many people ignore, specifically those who complain about the game taking too long:

RULES for a SHORT GAME (60 to 90 minutes)
There are five changed rules for this first Short Game.
1. During PREPARATION, the Banker shuffles then deals three Title Deed cards to each player. These are free — no payment to the Bank is required.
2. You need only three houses (instead of four) on each lot of a complete color-group before you may buy a hotel. Hotel rent remains the same. The turn-in value is still one-half the purchase price, which in this game is one house less than in the regular game.
3. If you land in Jail you must exit on your next turn by 1) using a “Get Out of Jail Free” card if you have (or can buy) one; or 2) rolling doubles; or 3) paying $50. Unlike the standard rules, you may try to roll doubles and, failing to do so, pay the $50 on the same turn.
4. The penalty for landing on “Income Tax” is a flat $200.
5. END OF GAME: The game ends when one player goes bankrupt. The remaining players value their property: (1) cash on hand; (2) lots, utilities and railroads owned, at the price printed on the board; (3) any mortgaged property owned, at one-half the price printed on the board; (4) houses, valued at purchase price; (5) hotels, valued at purchase price including the value of the three houses turned in. The richest player wins!

ANOTHER GOOD SHORT GAME
TIME LIMIT GAME

Before starting, agree upon a definite hour of termination, when the richest player will be declared the winner. Before starting, the Banker shuffles and cuts the Title Deed cards and deals two to each player. Players immediately pay the Bank the price of the properties dealt to them.

Or you could just play Settlers of Catan, which never takes much more than an hour to finish and is more entertaining at every stage of the game.

To make it more fun I just make my own rules. Every property starts as owned by me, everyone else gets nothing, i start with $5000, everyone else starts with $5. Nobody ever wants to play with me though.

The only Monopoly rule we always play by is that stealing from the bank is a-okay as long as you aren't caught.

Why the fuck would you not buy a property you land on? I'd like to hear one good reason. There isn't one. You buy everything you land on. This is the first rule of Monopoly.

Playing monopoly vs you sounds easy, you waste all your cash on the $300 green and yellow stuff and by the time you have all 3 cards you're practically bankrupt anyway

In Monopoly, as in life, you have to spend money to make money. Initial property prices are very low compared to the amount of money they can generate during the game. You buy everything you land on and trade the properties you don't want for the ones you do want. Everyone knows this.
