OH NOOOEESSSS.....they said the "S" word at 9pm!!! Why do these people think that they can continue to destroy America? Can't they do something good for the country instead?

Isn't there some poor lobbyist to take kickbacks/bribes from or some foreign country to invade under the guiese of "spreading freedom and democracy" through blowing sh*t up? Oh NO!!! I just said the "s" word too. I guess I will be hearing from Michael Powell any day now.

Four TV networks and their affiliates have filed court challenges to a March 15 Federal Communications Commission ruling that found several programs "indecent" because of language.

ABC, NBC, CBS and Fox, along with their network affiliate associations and the Hearst-Argyle Television Inc. group of stations, filed notices of appeal in various federal courts, including in Washington, D.C., and New York. Some of the appeals were filed late Thursday and the rest Friday morning.

The move represents a protest against the aggressive enforcement of federal indecency rules that broadcasters have complained are vague and inconsistently applied. Millions of dollars in fines have been levied based on those rules.

The appeals challenge the FCC's finding that profane language was used on the CBS program "The Early Show" in 2004, two incidents on the "Billboard Music Awards" shows broadcast by News Corp.'s Fox in 2002 and 2003 and various episodes of the ABC show "NYPD Blue" that aired in 2003.

The FCC did not issue fines in those cases because the incidents occurred before a 2004 ruling that virtually any use of certain expletives would be considered profane and indecent.

While none of the cases involved NBC, a unit of General Electric Co., the network filed a petition to intervene on behalf of the other networks and stations.

The networks and affiliate groups, representing more than 800 individual stations, issued a rare joint statement Friday calling the FCC ruling unconstitutional and inconsistent with two decades of previous FCC decisions.

"In filing these court appeals we are seeking to overturn the FCC decisions that the broadcast of fleeting, isolated - and in some cases unintentional - words rendered these programs indecent," the statement said.

The networks and stations said the FCC "overstepped its authority" and acted arbitrarily in not giving the networks a clear standard for what content is objectionable.

In three of the cases, the FCC found that violations occurred during live broadcasts. A contestant from the CBS show "Survivor: Vanuatu," for instance, used a variation of the "S" word when referring to another contestant on "The Early Show" in December 2004. CBS was owned by media conglomerate Viacom Inc. at the time before it split into two companies in late 2005, with CBS Corp. owning the CBS and UPN networks.

The FCC found the use "indecent," but did not issue a fine because "our precedent at the time of the broadcast did not clearly indicate that the commission would take enforcement action against an isolated use of the 'S-word,'" the FCC wrote in its March 15 order.

In the case of "NYPD Blue," on the Walt Disney Co.'s ABC network, the FCC found that the show's use of a variation of the "S" word was indecent because the episode aired at 9 p.m. in the Central and Mountain time zones. The use of the word after 10 p.m. in the Eastern and Pacific time zones was not objectionable, the FCC found.

The networks and affiliates Friday said they objected to the "growing government control over what viewers should and shouldn't see on television."

The group said parents already have the ability to block certain programs by using the V-chip and various other parental controls.

Just shut the Networks down, it would only hurt themselves, how else would Faux News be able to continue to brainwash the Sheeple.

If they're really worried about the impression the networks make on kids, they should fine any station that shows the idiot-in-chief before 10pm. Talk about a horrible example for children.

So what's the "S" word exactly? I presume it's "sh!t" but it could also be "slut" which I don't have to self-censor around here at least.

Just a side note but When it was nine I was SLEEPING for about an HOUR already.....Even through most highschool I could barely keep myself awake past 9:30. It was colleged that screwed me up

As for this...I think there is a level where certain words should not be said to prevent over exposure to the children. But if we want real life dramas, you will hear these words; but to say an adult has to wait till a certain time to watch it....

the best option is to KNOW WHAT YOUR KIDS WATCH. That way if you have antenna, cable, satellite you can watch what you want to, and still monitor your children's shows. Especially with all the junk on TV, you'd think parents would consider the junk kids might be wtching; it isn't the government's job to babysit our kids.

Exactly, why don't the whiny little parents who are always b!tching about this show or that show, just use their damned V-chip already? Or my god -- maybe take some personal responsibility for their own kids and actually pay attention to what they're doing/watching? Why do the rest of us have to suffer because a bunch of sniveling whiny parents decided to have offspring?

I suppose some don't have the v chip, but yes more personal responsability is always a good thing.

So you mean to tell me you suffer if you don't hear sh*t 15-20 times a night?
I am sorry to hear about that. What is the disease called?

Its amusing that you support this type of government regulation.

I think that it is par for the course. Zen wants so badly to live in a communist state. He actively supports govt intervention in all private affairs whether it be a person's reproductive choices, their "right" to be spied upon by the govt, censorship, etc.

I honestly believe Zen goes to bed at night praying that Bush rewrites the laws to allow himself a lifetime appointment as president so that the xtrians can have complete control and turns us into the United Christian States of America.

Busybodyhypocrititis?

I'm suffering because I'm at the end result of a particular group who is determined to inflict their arbitrary moralistic beliefs on me. Christ almighty, it's just a word. The offensive part is entirely in your mind.

[ Not your mind personally, but you get my meaning ]

I don't think Michael Powell cares anymore.

"Powell resigned as Chairman of the FCC on January 21, 2005. He said that he was glad to spend more time with his wife. He is now a member of the Board of Visitors at his alma mater, the College of William and Mary."

Um, I hate to "but under Clinton". Actually, I don't.

But under Clinton the FCC was just the same.

Just putting it into perspective

The idea that two words mean exactly the same thing, feces and sh*t, and that one is obscene and the other is not obscene is ridiculous.
It is just arbritrarily drawing a line that and saying this is legal and this is not legal without any justification except the fact you want to make a law that does it.
With sh*t being a word every kid hears dozens of times a day and 98 percent of kids say at least once a day, all it teaches kids is the hypocrisy of society.
In fact, if the fcc said sh*t was not obscene and it was then said on tv shows just like in real life it would become just another word.

Off the topic slightly, but I don't think that is true at all. If it were, poetry and writing, and any other art relating to the spoken or written word, would be meaningless. Different words may mean the same thing in the end, but each word conveys a certain feeling, which is learned through interaction with society. To say that "feces" and "sh!t" (as used in the familiar context) have the same meaning is just flat out false. I'm not agreeing with the FCC's recent stance, but I am simply pointing out your fallacy.

You mean like the ones where people expect the government to ONLY SPEND AN AMOUNT EQUAL TO WHAT IS GENEERATED THROUGH TAXATION? Yeah, that's some ponzi scheme alright.

Of course not I'd just assume abolish the FCC, what a waste of money. What parents let their kids watch the aforementioned...sh1t? Those that do probably have already taught their kids all the key words.

In the heat of battle, my father wove a tapestry of obscenity, that as far as we know, is still hanging in space over lake Michigan...

Now, I had heard that word at least ten times a day from my old man. He worked in profanity the way other artists might work in oils or clay. It was his true medium; a master.

Personally I think that the networks are trying to compete with cable - I mean the best shows on HBO are adult themed (Deadwood, Rome, Sopranos, etc.)
