for society, religion

religion is not dangerous unless you are speaking of religious fanatics of which most people who are religious do not fall into that category.

the religion bashing in this forum has reached the pitiful stage.

Religion affects your actions. It's a dangerous precedent to accept something without evidence.

Alcohol is a very destructive drug to your body. Nicotine itself is addicting, but it is the chemicals in the cigarette that kill you.

I have smoked weed before and I do not call it a "gateway drug". I smoke weed but have very little interest in wanting to use other drugs (shrooms, xtc, salvia, cocaine, heroine, etc.).

Stupidity. I've known guys who done the hardest but they can control it. I've done Heroin, Once. Pot 3x. Acid about 100x. Cigarettes 1 month. etc - all over once I hit about 22. Some people are just weak minded and succumb to addiction which destroys. Ultimately it's the mind which effects how harmful any of these will be to you.. Once won't kill you unless you OD which again comes down to stupidity.

Ohh man, I can't imagine what life would be like if they tried to take coffee away from me ...

In my last post, I was refering to your "gateway drug" bit .... it was glorious!

Being involved in the recovery community, I have heard so many stories about addiction and the harm it has done. The common theme is that people had problems elsewhere in their lives and chose to compensate by using/doing X. It doesn't matter what X is. It matter what people will do to get it.

And I don't know why the gateway thing popped into my head. Its been at least 15 years since I have heard that phrase. They talk about it all the time in DARE, never mention it in substance abuse treatment.

The gateway thing must have popped into your head because you were tripping (due to a gateway drug that forced you to try a mushroom cause you were high and thought it would give you fireballs or an extra life) and you were seeing "McGruff the crime dog" in a vision!

As far as being involved in the recovery community, man, that has to be some really tough work. I'm sure in some cases it can be gratifying, but It would be really depressing 90% of the time I'd think. Kudos for trying to make the world a better place ...

Its not really work, I do it all for free. I wanted to get into substance abuse counseling, but apparently they can't find my selective service registration from 13 years ago. That means I can't get financial aid.

The good thing about doing it for free is that I can be as truthful as I want. If someone is fucked, I can tell them that. If its obvious that they don't want to change their ways, I can tell them to go smoke some crack and quit wasting my time.

I'm in the medical field. The worst thing out of all the drugs on that list for you is probably cocaine. Cocaine causes constriction of blood vessels in the head, and thus, strokes. This tends to make people uninhibited. Taking cocaine is like getting lobotomized, bit by bit at a time.

The other drugs on that list (except perhaps meth, which has a similar mechanism to cocaine) don't really have the same long term effects. What amuses me is that I interview a lot of crackheads who admit to taking cocaine, but when I ask them about heroin, they look at me like I'm crazy. "No way man, I don't touch stuff like that!" Heroin is incredibly addictive, lethal in overdose, and has a very risky mechanism of administration. But the long term impacts of taking heroin (especially to your brain) aren't as bad as cocaine.

Meth... It has destroyed the rural areas of what used to be some nice, scenic areas of Northern Alabama, and is destroying what's left. You can't take a kid fishing on the banks of Guntersville Lake along the back roads without seeing the ruins of meth labs all over the place. A&E did a special Intervention show on the area - it was called "Meth Mountain", which is what the Sand Mountain area is now known more commonly as. People get burned and blown up from the meth labs exploding all the time... If you take an early evening drive down the back roads, you will at some point smell the odors from the labs.. Has an odor similar to strong smelling cat urine.. The people on the stuff scratch their faces up, they go insane when "tweaking" and will do all kinds of crazy things.. Not too many people that have lived in the rural areas around here that don't know of at least one person that has been affected by it in some way or another..

Heroin kills the person and hurts the people around. Religion has killed hundreds of thousands.

Classifying them in the same manner is pretty stupid, but I can see how you'd get that.

That is something I didn't know. I suppose I am like the people you interview: I'd probably do cocaine if I was tempted and was in the right place at the right time (or is it wrong?) but would most definitely refuse to touch heroin.

Interesting, didn't know cocaine had worse long-term effects than heroin.

Alcohol kills ~15,000 people on American roads every year. While bad health related to tobacco usage might be responsible for more, smokers do it to themselves while many innocents are victims of alcohol. Religion is sometimes called the opiate of the masses but I really can't consider it (or porn) a "drug". The others aren't common enough to be candidates. So alcohol wins. Safest is marijuana.

You might want to recheck your math. The crusades alone accounted for roughly 9 MILLION.

I'm kinda surprised this is even close. Religion kills WAY more than all others combined.
