Tasted like scotch to me
JWB is a very smooth blended scotch. Most scotch drinkers I know think it's over rated. I got to taste some Napoleonic brandy that was like smoke with an alcohol afterburner. My brother gave me a shot of Johnny Walker Blue a few months ago. Tasted like scotch to me.
There's a good reason for that
Most expensive bottle I've bought was Sam Adams Utopia. I think I paid $140. If that's not liquor enough, Chivas Regal Royal Salute. I was thinking I paid $120 for the bottle, but while writing this, I believe it may have been $160 :^/ Most expensive glass at a bar was Macallan 25yr. The glass was $25.
The Royal Salute is similar to JW Blue. I believe they're both 21yr, and about the same price. Haven't looked in awhile. Scotch prices got crazy, and it isn't something I want to spend a fortune on. I don't think the old scotches taste better. It's just a unique experience. My preference is middle age. Between 12 and 18 year is my favorite, but even those have gotten pricey. I've been getting the occasional bottle of scotch as a treat, and have been drinking more rye and scotch blends. My every day scotch is Famous Grouse. $35 for a 1.75L bottle. Nothing really noteworthy, but an enjoyable dram. Now i sound like I was swilling moonshine.
Macallan 12 is $100 now?! I believe it, but back when I was first getting into scotch, it was $30-$35 a bottle. Inflation accounts for $16 of that, but the rest is insanity :^DA friend of a friend brought in a bottle of Macallan M ($5000 bottle) to our local pub and about 7 of us finished the bottle. Was it good? Yes! Was it 50 times better than a $100 bottle of Macallan 12 year old? Not even close.

Had a glass of this on a business trip. My coworkers all described the taste as rocket fuel. I got a bit more floral, oaky nuance out of it, but it wasnt worth the price for sure.
I've found brandy uninteresting. I like it, and I've had a few major brands(nothing really spendy), but they're all about the same. My goto brandy is Asbach Uralt. Tastes nice, and gives me my brandy fix for not too much money. IMO, whisky has a lot more to offer. It's more complex, and very different brand to brand, as well as within product family.https://www.totalwine.com/spirits/brandy-cognac/cognac/louis-xiii-cognac/p/87700750

Ah, that's one I've never had.Port Ellen 19 (ive had 22 and 23 as well) back in 1997 when it cost $100/bottle. Nowadays you would be lucky to get it for $2k.
Wikipedia said:When Port Ellen was closed in 1983, Diageo did not just 'mothball' the distillery, leaving all the equipment there in place. Instead, they knocked down some of the buildings, repurposed others, and destroyed the precious stills. Diageo say they are going to considerable efforts to recreate as similar as possible new stills, and point to factory records from the 1980s, and still having former Port Ellen employees working for them elsewhere on Islay to assist in an accurate recreation of the Port Ellen style
