Wasted bandwidth isn't any good for anybody.

But then we don't have much content filtering - sites for warez, torrents, etc. as well as software download places and things of that are blocked. Youtube is open, as is myspace and most other common sites.

We don't have a problem with it - employees are mostly good enough not to bother with it save for breaks.

I dont think anything is blocked where I work. Then again, i've never tried going to a porn site or a warez site... I dont think they filter (or monitor) anything.

My company policy is officially that we're not to waste bandwidth/browse personal sites/no assumed privacy/ and the rest of the usual stuff. The actual reality is we can browse everything. The only thing that is blocked is myspace which is odd since sometimes browsing digg will take me to significantly NSFW sites which are not blocked.

The other thing that is blocked is the World of Warcraft ports

Otherwise we have free reign and I do consider it a benefit.

edit: besides those two (myspace, wow ports but not the wow site/forums) nothing is restricted. However we are told in no uncertain terms that questionable use of our computers in an unprofessional way or use that could compromise our network will result in a warning followed by termination. They have no tolerance for people who abuse their systems. I'm just glad their definition of abuse is one dictated by common sense, not corporate productivity driven concepts.

My current employer (a relatively small division of a very large company) takes a very hands-off approach to internet and desktop use. Most everyone who works here is more than capable of maintaining their own system, & internet access is only slightly filtered.

Makes for a very nice work environment IMO.

All public proxies are banned too... I have no regrets on that at all. Its entirely fair.

That is a lawsuit waiting to happen... if a person gets fired for "surfing" the web, when going to court he can ask to see the logs of other employee's. If they have the same type of browsing, it will look like he got discriminated against.

Remember, "Bob" can be the laziest person and "Sally" is the most productive, but does a lot more web browsing... looking at the logs.. it will seem that Sally is more lazy..

Also, if a company decides that they want to do a good job of censoring their networks, but if a person was able to go to a questionable chat site and arrange a murder.. just by trying to "provide" a "censored" network.. the company can be held liable..

Its the same thing as when people say they should NOT shovel the snow on their sidewalks during the winter to avoid lawsuits.

Just my thoughts..

the wISP i worked with had a small handful of employees and blocked those 2 sites on one pc:

that of the boss' daughter, who was supposed to be a secretary, but preferred to tweak her myspace page and watch videos.

everyone else hit up random sites from time to time, during downtime, on a break, that sort of thing....but this woman was on it *all day* until they blocked her.

i was a little surprised when i started school last week. its a community college, and my first class in a room full of pc's was my OS concepts class

"please guys, dont browse myspace and youtube or WoW guilds while were in class, its disruptive"

its enough of a problem to mention, but not enough to set up a blacklist? go figure.

Our work apparently monitors our use, but all I do that isn't strictly work related is check the news & read and very occasionally post on AT (Photography and the Garage only).

I do take the view that as long as I'm performing at or above my manager and director's expectations, there's nothing wrong with taking time out to relax, and that's pretty much their attitude too.

what do proxy filters have to do with pouring salt on the testicles of a man just assaulted by a morningstar?

Ummm no. It is clearly outlined in our employment manual (that is signed off on by every new employee and in turn every new calendar year) that internet usage is to be used for work related purposes only. We can most certainly fire for grounds of abuse etc. And we have.

We are a law firm and I assure you we know our legal rights.

While on active duty I managed a proxy at an Air Force base. I was almost lynched when I blocked nfl.com and espn.com for half a day. I also had to assist in evidence collection due to people using our network to look at kiddie porn.

You are wrong on just about every count. This has all been tried numerous times in the past.

I turned down a job because of the answer I was given on their content filtering. Its a question I always ask. I hate being filtered. Yes, sometimes I do read 'hacking' sites while trying to wrap my brain around a problem. Yes, sometimes I do just stumble for 30 minutes to clear my head.

But now that I work in academia, it is basically a free for all.
