First off I cant believe no one said nurses in all of this long thread. *shrug*

Yeah, I noticed that too. Funny, how when they REALLY need you the tune changes.

Why? They're just going to die soon, no point in wasting effort on them.

I'm sorry but the garbage man gets my vote. I don't pay him, I don't tip him, I don't thank him, and I hardly ever see him. Yet he picks up my garbage every week without fail. Even when I throw nasty stuff that has stuck up for an entire week. He doesn't hesitate to take my old couches, used toilet paper, broken glass, or anything I put out there.

 and a  for my garbage man.

Doctor, teacher, and law enforcement all come to mind. The only reason I wouldn't pick doctor is because such a huge salary comes with it. Not that they don't deserve it, but it means people could become a doctor for the pay instead of the cause. That isn't true of the other two.

That's rather irrelevent today. The ave doctor doesn't make nearly as much money as they are perceived to, esp considering the state of Health Care today compared to the past. Malpractice insurance drains the majority of their income. Also, consider that a skilled surgeon works an ave of 70 hours per week (residents, interns).

No one goes into medicine these days b/c of salary. If they do...then they're deluding themselves...

I disagree, but only because of my perceptions of income. A teacher is only gonna make 30-40k a year, topping out around 60k after 15years (at least around here). A cop is slightly more, but not much. A doctor here has no problem getting up to 80-120k a year. Now, that's not CEO rich, but it's a LOT more than the average single income in America right now, and definitely way more than a teacher or cop make.

As of now(2006), Nurses are #1, Pharmacists #2, and Veterinarians #3.
Since 2000, Nurses have been #1 in all but one year - in 2001 - when firefighters received the highest ranking following the Sept. 11 terrorist attacks.
Pharmacists have been among the Top 3 most occupational groups for the past 27 years straight.

Not sure what you mean by pharmacist being a "top" occupation. As far as job availability or respect or pay?... but I know a lot of pharmacists and they will tell you this:

1. Basically pharmacists are professional insurance specialist b/c all they do is sort out peoples insurance all day long.
2. Computers can do the job of a pharmacist way better, when it comes to detecting contraindications and cross reactivities.

Sure pharmacists can "counsel you" but when was the last time one did? When I go to the pharmacist I get "counseled" by a 16 year old kid reading off the paper he is about to give me which I could read myself.

Thank god for the health insurance because I would have blew up if I had to pay $900 for a doctor visit when all he did was ask me a few question and had the nurse take my blood pressure.

I'll call shens on this. $900 may have been the fee for the immunizations (vaccines can be insanely expensive for clinics to purchase), but you'd be off by about a factor of 10 in terms of the fee for the actual visit. And, if your bill was paid by health insurance, chances are your doctor was lucky to receive 50-60% of what he actually billed out.

By the way, typical overhead expenses for a medical practice run about 55-60% of gross revenues. So, unless you paid cash, your $90 office visit actually *netted* your physician about $21.50.

Doctors throughout history have made humans worse off, and it is only recently that advances in medical technology that we are able to fix our bodies and extend our lives. very very few doctors have anything to do with these advancements. Most of the advancements are from Chemical Engineers and Research scientists who invent new fascinating drugs and Surgeons and Inventors that invent machines that do extraordinary work. And it's the entrepreneur and investor that conducts the orchestra and organizes the structure that allows new advances in technology to be introduced to society.

Doctors are nothing but wannabe-gods who are no better than the Teamsters and UAW workers that are failing America. So please take doctor off the list. If anything, replace him with Surgeon or Chemical Engineer.

Wow, where'd you obtain your degree from? Your school seems to have had some funny ideas about history, education, science, and economics.

I don't suppose your entrepreneurs running the managed healthcare companies with their billions in salaries/bonuses have anything to do with the "cause of such high healthcare costs." I'd gladly trade in the $200,000 & 12 years of training I spent to become a "wannabe-god" in order to be held in such high esteem as your entrepreneurs and investors.

The next time you happen to become seriously ill, feel free to consult your local Chemical Engineer while my colleagues and I remain hard at work continuing our efforts to make "humans worse off." Sheesh.

BTW, I vote Teacher.

You didn't get your JS80-blocking glasses in the mail? We've all had them for a while now. Must have gotten lost in shipping.

Google "America's Most Trusted Profession"
You'll see nurses and pharmacists.

1. RIGHT...
2. That's not all pharmacists do.

I counsel everytime at work.
That 16yr old kid that "counseled" you was probably a pharm tech. Only pharmacists and Interns in 3rd/4th yr pharm school(with a pharmacists listening by) can counsel where I work.

Respectable as in people respect them for the position? not in any order: Professor, Doctor, Firefighter, Engineers, Judge (although i don't always agree), some others.

i agree with the post about law enforcement (75% good, the other 25% screws it up). we've all heard of dirty cops...have you ever heard of a dirty firefighter? (good opportunity for someone to find some crazy Blue Streak type video on this for a firefighter)
