They are called on day after day to save our lives in a profession where only the person who you just saved thinks of the world of you and always will.

Their profession, by nature, is founded on only one simple purpose: to save humanity from itself and the elements with no foresight in mind (besides inspectors).

It's selfless, it's humble, it's life threatening, and at the end of the day, AS A WHOLE, they are the most respectable people period.

As for doctors, there are special cases, but those special cases outclass everyone else.

Exactly! There is no other profession I can think of that every time they are called its to save a life, or in the case of a firefighter, a life, your property, and puts his/her life on the line to do so.

Not all doctors do this, there are a few but not many on call to go to a car crash or anything of that nature first on the spot of the accident.
Not all police do this, in some case police are looked down upon, where as a paramedic or firefighter would never be looked down upon for pulling you over handing you tickets because they are the law and can.
Lawyers, dont make me go there
I just cannot think of one other really that comes to mind that when called upon doesnt show up to a situation that may be life threatening for the victim, or the person showing up, to save your ass or your stuff.

I am not voting because you did not put the mother of all engineering "Civil Engineering" in there. How could you forget that?

Believe it or not but historically chem engineers have been very highly respected. Not sure why, is it the hardest mainstream engineering major b/c it's actually a lot of chemistry? Unlike EE, Nuclear, Mechanical which are classic engineering disciplines? No clue

This doesnt make sense, you just list Doctors and Lawyers even though there are hundreds of classifcations of each which Im sure there are more respectable areas of study but for Engineering you list Chemical Engineering? The profession is still Engineering.

I for one would like to see it changed to simply Engineering

I chose firefighter/paramedic. I don't even know why some of those are on the list... especially IT and chemical engineer.

I chose firefighter/paramedic over doctor, because firefighters sometimes risk their lives to do their jobs. Also, many people become doctors for the money. You don't become a firefighter or paramedic for riches and wealth - many of them are volunteers even.

Naw, the TBGs always whine.

The OST security guys never whine... except in the episode in which Spock and crew were stranded on a planet in a shuttle and giant furry men were killing them.

Wasn't the guy that whined in that episode the medic or something? I thought he had a blue uniform.

The episode was The Galileo Seven.

I think the whiner was Lt. Boma.

Yeah, he whines, but so do the two gold shirts that are with them. He doesn't count because he's a TBG and he lives.

Gold wasn't security in TOS.

You're right. Then who were those two idiots? Command and helm?

It wasn't?

In TOS, Gold was Command, Red was Security, Engineering, et cetera. In TNS, Red became Command, Gold became Security, Engineering, et cetera. Blue was Science and Medical in both series.

I show two guys in gold shirts on the guest star list, Lt. Gaetano and Lt. Latimer. I seem to recall Latimer being a whiner, but it has been years since I saw that episode. Only two red shirts along were Scotty and Yeoman Mears.
