I think the 2000 years later part makes perfect sense, I think they are actually making a comparison between the humans and whatever those skinny things are (may they be super robots or aliens). Since humans are selfish, they went extinct. Those beings at the end, remember how one of them said to David that what they wanted is to make him happy?

BTW I liked the film, but it is definitely not your usual meaningless action or senseless comedy flick, this film actually made me think.

Yeah, the robots said it was very important to them for David to be happy. Maybe it's because the robots evolved from David and since David was built to love, these super advanced robots evolved into beings who are giving and loving creatures.

I think those beings at the end were sort of the new residents of Earth. I think they were some kind of alien. I think the reason that they David is so important to them is because he is their link to the past, much like a book or fossil is our link to the past.

the aliens could be the best of both 'mecha' and 'orga'. the humans and their robot creations,
which bear the imprints of their human creators, struggle for supremacy. giggolo joe represents
the most militant anti-human voice when he confides to the kid why he thinks humans bear such
animosity towards robots. the flesh fair crowd is the human half of the conflict.

the aliens would represent a moral and physical perfection, completely transcending the flaws of
both machines and humans and then adding a few evolved powers of their own. can you tell the sex
of any of the aliens ? do they even have gender ? they communicate telepathically, wear no
clothes, exhibit not one anatomical detail (outside their basic forms), and there glass-like
bodies resemble a luminous organic artificiality

AI was a good movie. the only thing that ruined it was all the explaining that they did during the last 20 minutes.

it is a shame kubrik didnt have a chance to make this movie the way he wanted to. could you image what "rouge city" would have been like kubrik style? not to mention the "flesh fair". not to mention the "david and gigelo joe" sex scene that spielberg decided not to do.

all in all, I liked it great special effects, amazing use of light and dark, wonderful camera work, and likeable characters.

Well, thank God for Spielberg! I for one would not want to see a sex scene between David and Gigolo Joe! That would be gross! :Q

Good movie.
Everyone should see it and suspend disbelief. Let yourself be caught up in it.

I also liked...
1. T2
2. Princess Bride
3. Shawshank
4. Braveheart
5. LA Story

recently... Memento, Startup.com, Shrek
wasn't impressed with Mummy 2 (loved first one).

Admission: i LOVE future movies. Give me a Mad Max: Road Warrior, T1/T2, Blood of Heroes, even the Matrix (overrated but fun) and I will like it. I love people's vusions of what our world will turn into.

Minor Spoilers

Yes. The last 20 minutes need to go.
BUT

I usually dont like kids in movies. Osment was amazing. Seriously.
So was Jude Law.
The first act was good. (David with family).
The second act was amazing (Pinnochio-ish story, Flesh-thing scene...i was happy spielberg left those elements in).

I thought Joe and Teddy were really good, but Teddy was a bit too smart and Joe *seemed* to exhibit true emotions.

People need to pay more attention at movies. The dudes at the end were machines. I dont remember if u have to read between the lines, but as soon as they started talking, it was clear to me (when i first saw them i was PRAYING they werent aliens... and they weren't).

END SPOILER

I didn't mind TRL, it was certainly more thought-provoking than Private Ryan.

In the old Mr. Showbiz scale (0-100), I'd give this a 90.

I thought it was a great movie, definitely worth paying for. I was impressed by the kid's acting. The movie reminded me of Blade Runner and Edward Scissorhands, especially the genericness of the names of things like "Cybertronics" and that helicopter thing. Also there were some parts that were predictable, but in a good way (like in your mind you want something to happen or be said because it just fits perfectly).

The ending: way to ruin a great movie!
As soon as the ending started the movie's spell was instantly broken, and I was left just hoping for it to end before anything *really* cheesy happened. People began to talk in the theater and some left. I wanted to leave.

If there's anybody reading this who hasn't seen the movie, I recommend you to skip the last part. And believe me you'll know exactly what point in the movie that is.

The creatures @ the end weren't from earth, they commented that David was the "best of what the humans had developed"

Seems more like they were robotic/organic life forms that originated from somewhere other than Earth, or "they" would be an example of what humans had created.

What was up with them touching each other for data transfer? (when they examined David's memories) they posessed antigravity etc, but don't have bluetooth?

I liked it, wife cried during forest scene.

I am one of the few who thought the movie was OK. Not overly wonderul, not a bomb.

It definately had Kubrick ideas all throughout. It was not a cookie-cutter movie. It spent too much time on subplots that could have been used in more deatiled character creation. My Opinion.

The group I went with hated it. They wanted a robots killing robots ala Comedy Central. Snickering throughout the ending. Whatever. I looked beyond the obvious, and looked for the reasons behind the direction.

It was tough. Kubrick is tough. Spielberg (burg?) is easy. Mix them, and you get an odd movie.

Haley did outstanding. The same people who say The Backstreet Boys (let me remind you they are multi-millionaires) have no talent, usually say HJO sucks. BSB makes millions of dollars siging. It must work.

HJO gets nominations (not for this one). It must work.

Look beyond the visual.

My Movies

1. Mercury Rising
2. Hackers
3. What Dreams May Come
4. Sneakers
5. Pay It Forward

I have many more, and these are the first 5 favorites I saw when going through my DVDs

The Sarge

More of my faves: 12 Monkees, Saving Ryans Privates..er...uh..., South Park, Matrix, What Dream, Toy Story, Bugs Life, A lot of Chevy Chase stuff, Days of Thunder, Top Gun, the list goes on and on

Well this thread is getting a little long, but didn't feel like starting a new one...I too agree that this movie sucked. It sucked bigtime. The first 2/3 are actually not too bad, although very slow. As a whole, it seems that the point of the movie is really being beaten in... which I don't appreciate too much. It is really a simple movie, with a very simple story, yet it is trying to be very mysterious and everything. However, the death stroke was the ending. Never before have I seen such a crappy ending to a movie. Was everyone smoking crack?!!??! People I was in the theater with (including myself) were busting out laughing at the overdone ending. At any rate... go see it for yourself, but don't pay the full price, see the matinee.

BTW... just in case anyone wonders... I am a huge Kubrick fan. I love damn near all of his movies. This however, was garbage. Spielberg totally screwed it up, I think.

I was disappointed too. The ending was bad, the spielberg-warm-tummy crap sucked. David never got the chance to learn much, so we had to go along on his ill-conceived quest for half the movie. There wasn't any machine civil-rights aspect to story, but the prejudice was well depicted.

saw the preview, that was enough.

the preview made me want to go to sleep, so I can just imagine what the film is like.

"I want to be a real boy." "I see dead people."

I only read part of this thread, but I am still going to post my opinion on A.I. because I didnt see anyone post feelings similar to mine.

I didnt feel that the movie was a waste of time and money. In my opinion, its saving grace is the simple fact that it brings to the forefront a very real (and soon to be salient?) issue that I have never seen addressed this way in any movie: what are the boundaries of consciousness/sentience/humanity? More particularly, can we build machines with these characteristics? To what degree?

Unfortunately, these issues are not as central to the movie as they could have been. It was "Hollywoodized" more than I would have liked to see.

Anyways, I liked the movie although it did not live up to my expectations... I agree that there were at least 2 perfectly acceptable places where it could have ended some 20 minutes earlier. The last 20 minutes seemed like some totally ad hoc attempt to make the ending seem less cold. But I would have gladly accepted the cold impersonal ending - there is something to be said for the beauty of tragedy.

I agree. This was one of the issues that I think the film brings forth that I found very interesting. What exactly is the nature of consciousness/sentience/humanity? What exactly is life? And if and when we can build such machines, what would be our responsibility to these creatures? Unfortunately, I also think it's way over the head of the average viewer. I'm curious as to the reaction from people who studied A.I., neural networks and related subjects. Did they enjoyed the film?

I can see and understand this viewpoint. However, I actually liked the sappy ending. I cared about David and wanted to see him find some happiness and the ending brought tears to my eyes. I think one of the reasons is because I could relate to him so well and I hope that I will experience a happy ending too.
