That was a cool film, that and 'Enron-The Smartest Guys in the Room' should be mandatory watching.

I haven't seen this video or even heard about it before, I have no idea what it is about, but I am guessing from the title that it can be summed up in the following sentence:

Corporations are evil, steal your money, kick your puppy, are owned by the Jews, and are controlled by G.W. Bush to enslave you in materialism.

Decent documentary. Worth the watch for the accurate historical accounts and perspectives it gives about how the modern limited liability corporation came about in America. And the truth that, despite the propaganda, the modern corp is not representative of any kind of true capitalism. This flick does a good job of explaining all that.
It also does a good job of explaining how the leadership of the big corps don't have nearly as much power or control over their massive corporate bureaucracies as most people believe (IIRC, the example given was that the CEO of Shell was just as concerned as about the company's environmental record as some environmentalists who were protesting at his private home, and that he felt just as powerless to do anything about it as they do).
It falls apart quickly after that, and its conclusion/solution at the end is wretched socialist crap, as though one form of indifferent psychotic collectivism is better than another.

Way to guess wrong.

The point of the movie is that corporations are very useful tools, but ones that need to be used carefully as they are dangerous as well as helpful.

Thanks for the info, Vic.

I haven't seen it, and I may take a peek at it. I will say that I am not surprised to hear about their "solutions."

Indeed. And it does a great job at explaining how they are legally set up, which is a really strange history in itself. Corporations being seen as a 'person' by the government, though they are indeed above the law in many cases.

Hmm, maybe I am too cynical for my own good!

I haven't seen your posts or even heard about you before, I have no idea what your views are about, but I am guessing from your post that they can be summed up by:

Right-wing ideologue who doesn't begin to understand the issues and blindly attacks the other views.

That's how I got it.

The best criticism of the modern corporation that the documentary presents is that of the legal notion of juristic personage granted to corporations. It's silly and unfair, and puts corporations above the law and normal people at an extremely unfair competitive disadvantage.

So the documentary is worth the watch for that alone.

Back in the 1880's, shortly after the industrial revolution before society had any real ways to deal with corporations, they had reign over society in a lot of ways, very powerful.

And what they wanted to do was to take the amendment that guaranteed equal rights for slaves, and corruptly abuse it to say that corporations had the same rights as people.

It's a crazy idea, but enough money and power can cause things like that to happen. They relentlessly pursued it in the courts with their powerful lawyers.

They lost again and again for years - the number of cases about the issue of corporations trying to use that amendment dar exceeded the number of cases involving African-Ameriicans for whom it had been written - but finally there was a remarkable accident of history, as written about in this excellent book by Thom Hartmann, which is good to read, along with the movie in this thread.

TY.. you explained that very succintly..

One part I remember that was really sad was the Bechtel privitization of water in Bolivia and they raised the prices crazy high so that people could barely afford water and did the Enron laugh at the people

Great film to watch, really pointed out a lot of things I was not aware of with corporations. The legal case between GE and the patent office and the end results is quite a piece of history. Also of course the use of the 14th admendmant to make corporations into a person with rights.

Very well done indeed.

I walked away from it feeling like the solution was to stop treating corporations as individuals; granted the same rights without the same consequences for breaking the law or acting unethically. This will get me pegged as a communist, but more regulation of corporations will ultimately protect their ability to exist (and the rest of us).

Oh and also the part about how Fanta is nazi coke, and how IBM flew techs to auschwitz or wherever to maintain the counting machines keeping track of the prisoners. I somehow doubt that an individual would've gotten away with that... all Jane Fonda did was sit on a tank.
