The MP really is different than the XP

Thunderbird/MP/XP

Take a look at the link above. The MP and Thunderbird use the older ceramic packaging. The XP uses the new PCB packaging. I may be misjudging the sizes of the core here, but the MP and XP look like different sized cores, too.

Not true. The 1.0 and 1.2 MP's use the old ceramic packaging. The XP and the new MP's that come out next week use the new packaging.
That picture is showing the older MP.

So far there seem to two minor differences. Firstly the mp's are unlocked. Secondly on the mp's the smp 'logic' is tested while on the xp it is not. Otherwise they are the same. Both use the organic packaging. The mp's you speak of are teh earlier ones but the newer ones i described are virtually the same as teh xp excpet as mentioned in teh case of being unlocked and tested.

So what does this mean for performance? I assume there will be a slight hit but how much?

There should be no performance hit assuming the SMP circuitry is working as it should. The only difference is that it wasn't tested at the factory.

Exaclty. They are unlocked but with some patience and a conductive pens you can change that. As for the smp circuits the fact that they are not tested doesn't mean they won't work. It jsut means they haven't been tested to see if they work.

And they're not supported by AMD if they do work.

Edit: And you're saying the 1.8MHZ MP will be ANNOUNCED on Oct 15 or FOR SALE on Oct 15?

jackieO at amdmb.com forums (he runs his own site too, but I forget) says he has two newer MP's and two XP's and they appear the same (organic etc..) other than the bridges being locked on the xp's.

Maybe we will get an official answer from AMD, but I expect it will be the same as what they said about the T Birds. "We only support the MP's in dual configurations."

The concensus seems to be "it will work, but is not guaranteed".

I am ordering mine after the next wave of price cuts later this month.
