The "N" word

So I noticed in the thread about the 67 yr old man that beat up a young black male, the first person to use the "N" word very quickly received a vacation from the forums. I thought it was a little ironic since the black male himself was liberally using the "N" word himself in the video.

When used by a non-black person, though, I suppose the "N" word is just about the most inflammatory and anti-PC word in existence. I've seen quite a lot of deragotory words for other races/cultures used here, and nasty words in general, without prompting any bans.

So i'm curious, is there any other word besides the "N" word that will get you banned in these forums?

Yes. At least it has happened in the past.

If you see someone using racial slurs you can use the "report post" button.

Contexts matters.

Can you say monkey? I find that more offensive than the n word.

"Why do they want us to stop saying 'great person'?"

"Because it's disrespectful and degrading to our people."

"Jer? Well so is 'motherfucker,' you niggardly motherfucker!"

"Huh?"

"If they're gonna ban the word 'great person,' then they gots to ban the word 'motherfucker,' because 'motherfucker' is disrespectful and degrading to all our mothers. And last I checked there was a hell of a lot more mothers out there than there are awesome people, you motherfucking great person!"

The mods probably already didn't like whoever they vacationed for it. Generally you can say absolutely anything about black people on AT and the mods will look the other way while other posters will agree wholeheartedly and add their own insults. I would assume that's because a lot of AT posters live in the US in red states, according to a few polls I've seen done (it would also explain why there are a lot of posters here who question evolution).

It's derogatory terms about other races - notably asians (since AT has a lot of asian posters) and Indians (since the site founder is Indian) which will get you in trouble more reliably.

Racism is perfectly alright on AnandTech as long as it's against white people. Spend a week reading the OT forum and it's plain to see who the bigots are on this forum, most of them have been here for years.

great person.

There I said it, ban me.

OK, I will. This thread is left open for what appears to be a try at rational discussion. For the most part it is. Yours was just obvious trolling and a dare to be banned. I am more than happy to oblige you. Come back in a few days.

truth be told one person was highly offended by the use of the "N" word and about had a heart attack because it was used.

Of course this person when I communicated with him via PM`s had no clue concerning the etimology of the "N" word.

In fact even among blacks and people of color there is considerable debate as to whether the word is racist of just offensive.

My take is it depends on how the word is used!

Should people be banned for using the word-- NO!!
Should people be banned for using it as a derogatory comment?? I would YES!! But only if other words are also bannable offenses...

I'm genuinely curious - who are all of these anti-white racists in AT? And are they seriously offensive?

Why do people say "the 'N' word"? We all know what you're thinking. What's the point of this verbal obfuscation? It's like when people say 'darn!' instead of 'damn!' or 'fudge!' instead of 'fuck!'. We all know what you're thinking. You're not any more pure by using verbal substitutions!
