well, i wouldnt say that the refs are too sensitive on lakers defense, but they are letting far too much get away for the celtics

no way, it's t-mac's fault

anyway, even if the guy is completely uncredible, he is saying exactly what a lot of people who've stopped watching the NBA think.

there are probably even more people who stopped watching because of officiating regardless of if there is a conspiracy or not. refs across the court and with no angle to the play should not be blowing whistles. players should not be able to run the ball like a running back without getting called for a carry or travel. guards and big men should be officiated the same way. calls that could easily go either way should be either not called at all or called for a jump ball or a double foul and inbound to the last team with possession. flopping should be cracked down on hard. guys who have threatened to fight star players should not be officiating said player's games. the NBA has done very little to address very real concerns about the officiating, and they are losing potential fans because of it.

The funny thing is that people start calling it a "conspiracy" but the problem is its not a conspiracy. Maybe it is a lie, but not a conspiracy, and who is to say that this guy is lying. It will get washed under the table as this guy was sore, but maybe hes not just sore and he is telling the truth.
I guess we will never know and of course he will be portrayed as a liar and a cheater.

It's interesting how some of you guys all saw these terrible calls on Saturday, considering there was no game on Saturday.

In all honesty, this is not too surprising.

Conspiracy, according to the intergoogle, is a secret agreement between two or more people to commit an illegal act. Stern and the refs attempting to fix the games would fall under racketeering laws.

No credibility . bla bla bla

Didn't some ex-NBA ref get 25 years in jail for rigging playoff games recently?

Home team had this % more free throws than the away team:

Game 1: 25% (7 more FTs)
Game 2: 280% (28 more FTs)
Game 3: 54% (12 more FTs)

Bill Simmons has had two great commentaries on NBA officiating over the years.

From 2006 (last several paragraphs): http://sports.espn.go.com/espn...ry?page=simmons/060620
From last year: http://sports.espn.go.com/espn...ry?page=simmons/070722

In any event, Donaghy definitely has credibility issues, but his words echo the sentiments of a lot of current and former NBA fans. Stern has to do something other than casually dismiss his credibility to reassure folks that the integrity of his sport is in tact.

i say all refs should be an independent organization. one union for all sports. minimize owner/league/ref involvment.

I hate all this suspecting of calls. "incompetent," yet human officials were probably an issue since the NBA started. I don't believe the NBA fixes games. This entire debacle is truely not fair for the fans and the players.

omfg people

saying "try not to eject star players" is far from fixing games

The kings blew that series, not the refs. Was there a call or two that could have gone either way? Sure -heck, I was rooting hard for the Kings myself - but the refs didn't make C.Webb vanish is games 6 and 7, he did that all by himself. Peja's shooting went south too - was that a fix?

The crap with the Rockets series was a response to Cuban's antics, where he was charting officials calls, etc - the NBA just made sure that their refs were all on the same page because the officiated was under such scrutiny.

As for the current series - how many times did the Lakers take the ball to the hoop in game 2? They pretty much took nothing but jump shots - which is their fault, not the officials - you saw in game 3 the Lakers be much more agressive going to the basket - and as a result they got more fouls callled. As for why Powe got so many free throws - a better question is - why is he getting the ball at the basket so much? Keep him off the offensive glass or don't leave him to double whomever is driving to the basket, and he won't get so many free throws - when he does get the ball, they are practically tackling him, it's not like the calls he's getting are bad calls - he's certainly not a star player anyway, so it's not like the refs are giving him the benefit of the doubt.

Officiating basketball games is hard - and yes, the 'makeup call' has been in practice for as long as I've been watching NBA games, and yes, star players likely get calls that non-star players don't - but it's part of the game.

This is a guy who got caught up in the wrong crowd, owed people a lot of money, helped some games go certain ways - cover or not cover point spreads for the most part - and he got caught. This doesn't mean the entire NBA has a problem, or that other refs are doing similar things.

Personally, I'd like to see the NBA and college ball do away with charging inside the lane - charging/blocking is a very tough call to make, and to me, most of the charges are not really playing D, it's just getting in the way of someone who beat the guy defending them.
