Final Update (11/04/06): Official launch of the much anticipated NV's next generation GPU, G80, is only a few days ahead. For the past few days we had DailyTech's sneak performance preview as well as end-users' pictures/benchmarks leaked. Lots of stuff have been leaked since the day I started this thread and I consider this has been a very successful thread with lots of information! Perhaps NV had the hardest time in recent years to keep the secret about G80 off the various leakers. Thank you for everyone who participated and exchanged the information!

This thread was meant to be a 'speculation' thread from the beginning so today's update is the last one as far as this initial post is concerned. Not only that we all know most of the facts regarding G80 by now (at least from consumers' point of view), but also it's time for our professional reviewers to do their jobs.

DailyTech sneak preview: http://www.dailytech.com/article.aspx?newsid=4812

--------- Radeon X1950XTX--GeForce 8800GTX
3DMark06: 7026 ----------------------------- 11200
Half-Life 2: 60.74 ------------------------ 116.93
Quake 4: 34.23 --------------------------- 65.93
Prey: 55.53 -------------------------------- 88.87

*All games 1600x1200/4AA/8AF (Except 3DMark06)
  • Intel Core 2 Extreme QX6700
NVIDIA nForce 650i SLI based motherboard
    2x1GB PC2-6400
    NVIDIA GeForce 8800GTX
    PowerColor ATI Radeon X1950 XTX
    Western Digital Raptor 150

Lots of pictures and benchmarks from a user who acquired a Leadtek PX8800 GTX. Again, I can't believe how *long* this card is!

-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

With the previous thread regarding NV's upcoming DX10 GPU, G80, becoming a ~400 posts monster, I felt the need to start a new thread with some of the knowledge we have learned over the past few weeks. I hope this thread will help folks looking for information on G80, and also hope it to remain on topic. (Please keep the ATI vs NV thread in the old G80 thread! )

This first post heavily owes the following discussions, as well as aforementioned 'old' G80 thread in this forum.

http://www.beyond3d.com/forum/showthread.php?t=33576
http://dailytech.com/article.aspx?newsid=4441

8800GTX
  • 575MHz Core Clock
    900MHz Mem Clock
    768MB GDDR3 memory
    384-bit memory interface (86GB/s)
128 unified shaders clocked at 1350 MHz
38.4 billion pixels per second theoretical texture fill-rate
    450W PSU Recommended
Hard launch in second week of November ($650)
8800GTS
  • 500MHz Core Clock
    800MHz Mem Clock
    640MB GDDR3 memory
    320-bit memory interface (64GB/s)
96 unified shaders clocked at 1200 MHz
?? billion pixels per second theoretical texture fill-rate
    400W PSU Recommended
Hard launch in second week of November ($500)
Pictures of a prototype-like board can be found Here

Additionally, the following traits are rumoured to be attributed to G80:

  • 8800GTX w/ optional water-air hybrid cooling
3DMark06 score of single card 12K~16K
The cards most likely to be launched at GeForce LAN (Nov. 7-8, 2006)
Launch of NV's new MCP, NF680i and NF650i, will accompany the G80 debut -> Picture of an NF680i Board
G80 demo to feature a real person (a la 'celebrity') instead of an animated android -> Confirmed1, Confirmed2
NV's new physics engine, dubbed "Quantum Physics" to have a dedicated portion on G80 sillicon
Early sample of 8800GTX measures to 11", or 275mm, and 8800GTS to 9", or 225mm: Considering these lengths are not practical on a standard ATX board (9.6"x12"), they'll likely to change. (Thanks Cookie Monster)
Support for X16 AA on single-GPU as well as a brand-new Anti-Aliasing method "VCAA"
Mainstream parts (G83?) to arrive Spring 2007[/b]
Again, please keep discussions unrelated to this topic to minimum. I will try to update this post as much as I can. With the imminent release of Vista and DX10, truly interesting times are ahead of us!

Update (10/26/06): Latest 3DMark scores revealed!

Update (10/29/06): See below (Credit goes to Gstanfor as well as Triniboy @B3D)

  • 681M transistors
    FP32+MSAA (a la HDR+AA)

    128 scalar MADD+MUL - 518 GFLOPS/s
    Groups of 16
4 Texture Address calculators per group - 32 total
    8 TMU's per group - 64 total
    6 ROP clusters (how many ROPs in a cluster? One?) / 4 samples/clock (minimum 4xAA ?) Double Z/stencil?
    WUAF -> *Angle-independent AF*
    Improved Dynamic Branching

New Coverage Sampling AA not universally compatible
    NV I/O - Dual-RAMDAC handling various I/O, including dual-link DVI and, possibly, multi-monitor SLI

It is fairly obvious that WUAF is something about Anisotrophic Filtering. German translation is reported to be 'Angle-Independent Anisotrophic Filtering'. With the criticism regarding NV40/G70's agressive optimization going out of control, it's been expected that NV will attempt to rectify the situation with its brand new GPU. How good their implementation will turn out remains to be seen. Also revealed is the little chip next to the G80's gigantic - let's just say NV's latest assualt on common sense - IHS will take care of various I/O related to video. There is a wild suspicion that it'll finally add multi-monitor support to SLI.

Critical Update (11/02/06): With the launch date coming in less than a week, Inquirer has organized the rumors/leaks that have been known to date as well as some of the new information. I will update this post as the information gets confirmed, but for now the following links will do.

G80 innards exposed
G80 boasts 24 ROPs

I call BEE ES on that. One card will not score more than 12K. I can see it hit 10-12K thou.

There are already some exotic solutions that have an X1900XT scoring near 12K.

If it doesn't, it'll be mightily disappointing, considering an overclocked C2D rig with CFed X1950XTXs comes awfully close to that score.... :disgust:

Please note the 3DMark06 score (and the other 3DMarks, too) can vary greatly by the CPU at play.

Personal attack doesn't make you win an argument. Besides, there is no point arguing over 'rumours'. Let's keep this thread more informative! (i.e. Who would be da celebrity?)

Hopefully we get some early reviews that focus on overclocking the GTS version. Memory bandwidth will be its weak point. $600+ is really over the top for me which pretty much rules the GTX out - I just hope the GTS isn't too badly crippled by its bus.

Even a "crippled" GTS seems like it would be a formidable graphics card.

A criticism on DailyTech's information from B3D. I made a change on 8800GTS' memory speed. (From 900MHz to 800MHz)

DailyTech has leaked apparently reliable specifications for NVIDIA's upcoming G80. They claim it will be hard launched in the second week of November and that the initial line up consists of the GeForce 8800GTX and the GeForce 8800GTS. Both cards are apparently based on an unified design, with the full chip consisting of 128 "stream processors", while the GTS will have only 96 enabled for yield reasons. The information further confirms other tidbits originally revealed by some leaked chinese powerpoint slides, including a 384-bit memory bus for the GTX and a 320-bit memory bus for the GTS, with 768 and 640MB of video memory for the two SKUs.

The specifications also claim that the unified stream processors are clocked at 1.35GHz for the GTX and 1.2GHz for the GTS, while the control logic, schedulers, ROPs, etc. are clocked at 575MHz and 500MHz for the GTX and the GTS, respectively. Other DailyTech news pieces published today reveal power requirements of 400W to 450W for a G80-based system, and 800W for one based on SLI G80s. As always, these numbers tend to be highly exaggerated in order to reduce potential problems with subpar OEM PSUs. Other related articles claim FP32 HDR and 16x AA support, both of which have been hinted at in the past, and the former actually being a requirement for D3D10. To be more precise, FP32 blending is a requirement, while FP32 filtering is optional. A fourth article on the site also speaks of NVIDIA's "Quantum Physics" engine, which is most likely a marketing name for the better acceleration G80 delivers to physics computations. It should also be noted that DailyTech lists some rather unlikely numbers in terms of memory clocks and texture rate. They list the GTX as having 86GB/s of bandwidth, and the GTS only 64GB/s. However, they also claim both have 900MHz GDDR3, which is highly unlikely.

It should be relatively clear that this was a simple typo, and that the GTS actually sports 800MHz GDDR3. As for texture rates, they give the number of 38.4GPixels/s for the GTX, but few logical ways exist to attain such a number with the specified clockrates. As such, it seems much more likely that this part of the specification relates to the GeForce 8800GTS and its 1200MHz stream processors.

http://www.beyond3d.com/forum/showthread.php?t=34328

Also added rumoured prices and a bit about 'Quantum Physics'.

ROFL? Are you serious... I wont buy G80 if they put her up on the screen.

I would. If the Rosie O'donnelle demo plays smoothly, think of how much of a beast this card is.

All those pixels rendered compared to skinny old Dawn.

Yep. If you must use the lame product for comparisons, at least use 3dmark05 which is more GPU focussed the 3dmark06. Personally I'm more interested in performance for actual games like Gothic3, Dark Messiah of M&M, Medieaval II Total war, Oblivion etc, etc than I am i a ridiculous synthetic benchmark.

Any word on pricing for either of these cards? Even what the current rumor is?

EDIT: WOW! IGNORE THIS!

Wait, actually...Are those listed prices official?

Actually 3dmark05 is the most cpu limited benchmark except for 01, and 06 has separate GPU scores..

Where does two X1950XTX's equal $1200? You can have that for around $800~$900. Not that I would buy CF over a G80, but c'mon...that's a little exagerated isn't it?

so you think the G80 is going to sell at exactly MSRP?

fine, knock the x1900xtx's price down to $840. lets see... thats $180 off msrp.

$840 for the two x1900xtx's
$470 for the G80 taking $180 off the MSRP

i see no fud.

GF8GTX: 86GB/s
1900XTX: 50GB/s bandwidth

70% extra bandwidth

MADD Shaders on the x1900xtx, 48x4@600mhz?
GTX MADD Shaders 128x4@1200mhz?

Ignoring texture/vertex power that seems like a lot more power.

~9k XTX score

edit: was only 9k, gotta find another 3dmark score
