Here's another thought for consideration, you're getting an 8GB iPod touch for $200, AND a phone.

OK, but if you aren't on a family share plan like me, you pay $70/month, which is twice as much as SERO. And you are locked in for 2 years. So you are actually getting an 8gb iPod touch, AND a phone, for $1040 if you compare to sprint.

And a two year contract, $100+ a month bill and AT&T service. I'll just pop an SD card in my i760 and get unlimited service for $50, and save myself a couple thousand dollars.

If I can sell both of our current iPhones, I'll probably swing it - mainly for 3G.

I'm going to pick up a used firt gen iPhone to use on TMobile once the new software is released and hopefully the prices drop.

Why do you say that? I mean you can get one in europe for close 600 euro unlocked if that's what you prefer. For $199 up front, you better bet they'll want to milk you somewhere.

Depends on what happens to Helio. I've almost reached a year on the contract with my Helio Ocean now. They are about to be bought out by Virgin Mobile. I'm hoping that since Virgin Mobile is buying the rights to my contract that I'll have the option to get out of it without the cancellation fees. I'm sure they'll find a way that it won't work like that though. I'd rather have the 3G iPhone.

I'll be grabbing the 3G as soon as my budget (and my fiancee) allows.

- Voice dialing
- Stereo BT
- Copy/Paste
- Mutitasking 3rd party apps
- Trusted business/DoD strength security
- Replaceable battery

When you have any of that on an iPhone you might be close to getting anywhere near the BB ballpark. A smart UI and interface can entertain for only so long, then you need substance.

oh, the ironing. Blackberries are awesome for business purposes (yes, I know it's capable of other little things too), but you're kidding yourself if you think that a blackberry is more "entertaining" than an iphone.

Seriously, I wouldn't take 10 iPhones to give up my N95.

besides a better camera & video camera what does the n95 have? the screen feels tiny next an iPhone, and the interface is boring as hell. I don't see why people are paying so damn much to have n95's imported. The N95 is thick as hell, I don't like the keypad & and interface sucks. The camera on it is the best I've seen on a phone, but it's still pretty ho-hum next to even a lower level $200 P&S camera.

Safari > mobile browser, even on Edge over 3G, there's no comparison.

reading comprehension ftw.

He's not saying a Crackberry is entertaining, he's saying all the iPhone has is an entertaining UI. Once you stop oooing and ahhhing at the pinching and such, it doesn't have much depth.

If you want to connect to the internet cloud, I think the iPhone does an excellent job.

Just depends on what you want in a phone...

I'm quite torn with this. The iPhone 3G has just about everything I'd want in a pda-phone: quad band, 3G, beautiful screen, tons of storage, GPS, wifi, bluetooth, supposedly great battery life, and an excellent UI. However, there are 5 flaws that are seriously making me hesitate:

1. No physical keyboard. This really bothered me on the original iPhone as I made lots of mistakes while typing and that really slowed me down.
2. Screen is not VGA. This is not too big of a deal given the iPhone's excellent UI and web browser, but a 640x480 screen would've been much nicer.
3. No copy & paste. Along with the keyboard, this is one of the biggest weaknesses of the UI.
4. The phone has bluetooth, but it can only be used for headsets. That means no A2DP for wireless music, no bluetooth tethering to use the phone as a modem and no file transfer over bluetooth. Seems like a total waste to me.
5. Price. Yes, the actual phone will be at $199 (which is pretty cheap for a nice iPod Touch), but the rate plan will probably be more than double what I pay now. Over two years (or is it a 3 year contract?), it'll cost me at least an extra $1000 (yes, this is after I subtract what I pay now) plus the cost of the phone. I guess it's a question of whether having a great media player, web browsing & gps everywhere I go is worth that much money.

Decisions, decisions. Guess I'll see what the reviews say.

There is no microSD slot in the iPhone 3G. Bluetooth can only be used to connect to headsets.

Huh, I could've sworn I saw it in the specs, but I went back and looked, and I think you're right. Wishful thinking, I guess

And yea, I just read up about the bluetooth, that's a damn shame - no A2DP, no tethering, no file transfer. I updated my post with this as another big drawback.

It's quad-band GSM. It's tri-band UMTS (3G).

As far as the original question, I really doubt that I'll get a 3G iPhone. I like my original hacked/unlocked iPhone a lot - I am writing this using a "PLUS iSimdata" card in Poland that I got for $9 US dollars and gives me 66MB of EDGE. I have been using this iPhone all week as our city map, for email, SMS and web surfing. I bought a Zap extra battery pack for ~$40 that triples the battery life (and thickness) of the phone and used it to watch movies, listen to music and play a lot of Texas Hold'Em on the flight over.

But this trip has also highlighted the weaknesses of the phone for me. No SD slot means that I can't email our digital photos. No keyboard makes email a pain. And this post for that matter... This crazy "I'll only sync with one computer" limitation means that it'll be painful on the trip back because I have watched most of my movies and can't get the others off of my thumb drive without major work.

I like my iPhone a lot... But I'll start to look for something else for the next trip... Maybe an N95...

The new iPhone will lock me into a seriously expensive contract - it'll add 50% more than my current T-Mobile bill. My city doesn't really have much in the way of 3G coverage. I'll wait and see what the new App store and new firmware look like... But I'm likely to jump ship to something else non-Apple in the next 6-9 months.
