Well, perhaps this model would be better-compared to the iPod Mini, which has a 4 GB hard drive.

Looking at the website, I'm noticing they're trying to be more like Apple by adding touchpad navigation and offering the model in several colors.

However, I went through two Zen 20 GB models (both developed problems with the headphones jack) before I finally exchanged it out for a 10 GB iPod. Half the space and less battery life, but never one problem.

the player does look nice, there were threads on these earlier. the title "ipod killer" doesnt ring a bell however, there have been plenty of better players out there but the dumb majority will buy i-pod no matter what and you know it. a true i-pod killer would be something like MTV promoting some other player e.g. some kind of large scale advertisement campaign that could reach the carefree mass.

Simplicity was one of the things that sold me on the iPod. My previous Nomad Zen had an awkward interface and it only worked as a removable hard drive when you had the proprietary Creative software installed. Granted the iPod needs iTunes to sync with the PC, it's a terrific program in of itself and it makes it really easy to sync and organize all your music just by plugging in the FireWire cable. I can buy most of my songs right in the iTunes store and I can do that within the same application. Sometimes "keeping it simple" is the best marketing platform, and it has obviously worked out great for Apple.

I know there are MP3 players out there now that "do more," but that brings me back to reason I bought an MP3 in the first place. I wanted a portable music player. What do I care if it has built-in PDA functions and other toys? It's just like my theory on cell phones. I buy a cell phone to talk, not to play silly video games, snap pictures, and balance my checkbook. I have a computer and camera for that! Bah!

you are a more conscious buyer compared to an average non-AT person, or at least thats what i expect from you when you post here you weighted things out before making your purchasing decision so thats cool, but most 'normal' people arent like that. as for the cell phone example, i would have to disagree; those camera cells became an icon of trendiness and everyone wants those just to be hip it seems to me.

Well, my latest phone has a little camera built in, and it's kinda fun but definitely not necessary for my needs. I bought it simply because I wanted a flip phone that had good battery life and the Sanyo 8100 just happened to have a camera too.

A new trend in communications devices? Definitely, yes. But I don't buy electronics to be hip. I buy them to serve my purposes.

It has a FM radio, can it also record off the radio? I'm not buying an mp3 player yet, I still have my minidisc which is a few yrs old and does fine. We should be seeing some impressive products in the comming year.
