I am plannning on purchasing one of these in a day or two and was wondering if i should use the onboard sound or buy a sound card (i have Klipsch 4.1's)? what should i do?
Please help and advise
Does the onboard sound stink or is it worth spending the money on a sound card?

The onboard sound is nothing special,if you have decent speakers and you do then I would go with either SB Audigy or Santa Cruz sound card, also they will both use less CPU usage then the onboard sound.

If you are using klipsch 4.1's you want to get a nice sound card or any set of good speakers, I am using the same speakers with mine

I had an SBLive on mine till I started noticing music was crackling and popping.. using the onboard audio for now.. it's alright. I use a 3 piece speaker system (Altec Lansing ATP-3), and it's a little hissy, but better than hearing static on my highs and lows. The onboard is alright if you have to use it, but for a nice speaker set like the Klipsch's, I'd grab a Santa Cruz or Hercules GTXP.

Oh, and one question.. I've got my memory settings on turbo, FSB at 145 (had it @ 150 but I had to go too conservative on memory settings to stay stable) and I get the following socres in Sandra:

Memory: 812/1000
CPU: 4307/2102

My CPU is an Athlon 1.4 @ 1.53 and I'm using 512mb of Nanya PC2100

Are these looking right? One thing that bugs me is my HD score. I get 13k. It's a 5400RPM drive, but isn't that low? It's running on DMA, and it's set as my primary master...

Hi! The new beta BIOS for the epox 8kha+ sounds so exciting. I managed to download it but I did not have the flash utility. I cannot find it in the Epox USA site (cannot display the page). I got an AWDFLASH.EXE from the Taiwan website. I tried to flash the new BIOS and encountered an "FLASH TYPE UNKNOWN" error. I think that it is the wrong utility. Please direct me to the correct AWDFLASH.EXE download.

I have also tried another AWDFLASH.EXE from somewhere else. I reached the point of writing the .BIN this time. Then it told to take off my floppy (with an ! mark). Bummer! Well, at least my motherboard did not die.

Please help!

One of all way to get a proper awdflash is to hit "F2" when your PC boots up, awdflash will be decompressed from bios image file, and will seek your floppy for a flash bin file.

There is a new beta bios dated 01/16/2002, and which is based on the 01/08/2002 official bios. Get it on mushkin rules forum.

Anybody have any of the following setups going on their 8KHA+ rig?

1. RAID-0 using an addon PCI IDE RAID controller (Promise FastTrak, etc.)

2. 2 hard drives both connected to an addon PCI IDE controller (Promise Ultra100 TX2, etc.) and have tried copying large files from one hard drive to the other

Both conditions, have you had problem-free performance? There appears to be a KT266A issue with high speed PCI bus transfers and both of the above conditions can demonstrate that problem. With regards to #1 you should try reading or writing a large file (500MB+) and doing lots of other I/O as well (CRC-check, multitask, etc) and see if that hangs your system or screws things up.

Definitely a reason to continue to remain wary of VIA products and chipsets.

In the manual for this board, it says that when you overclock and it won't post, just hold down Insert when rebooting to reset to stock config. Well...this has never worked for me. Every time I push it too far and it won't post, I always have to go clear the cmos with the jumper. This isn't too bad, but it gets irritating and makes it a pain to test new settings.

Did I just read the manual wrong, or are other people having this problem?

Is anyone here running the newest BIOS and on-board audio? I just flashed my bios and my audio is giving me problems.
First of all, it was working well before the flash. After the flash windows gave me the "found new hardware" menu. I let windows do it's thing but when it tries to install the drivers I get "An error occurred during the.... The data is invalid".

anyone have any ideas?
On-board sound is enabled in bio.

Well I have been talking about how stable it has been and today it crashed on me, I tried to reformat with no luck, I am going to check to see if it could be anything else causing it and if it is the board, Good bye Epox I am looking for another board

I'm using the newest beta BIOS and the onboard sound and it's working fine. Try uninstalling the onboard sound by removing everything you can under Sound, Video, and Game Controllers in the Device Manager and go to www.viatech.com and download the latest drivers and see if that helps.

Yeah, ATA133 is going to be really useful for a mobo whose chipset has defective PCI bus support. :|

Well I junked the Epox and putting in a dragon board to see if I have any better luck with that, I am not going to build people a computer that just runs stable for a month and then bugs out on them, But this way I will have tried all the KT266A boards but as it stands I wouldn't build anyone a 8KHA+
