True or False...

1) The Epox 8KHA+ board derives both the 3.3v and 5v rail from just the 5v leg of power supply..the 3.3v rail is regulated down to 3.3 from 5v on the mobo.

2) In most cases this configuration is fine unless the combined current draw from the 3.3 and 5 volt rails exceeds the max current capacity of the 5v leg from the PS. In the case of my Enermax supply that is 44A.

3) In spite of the fact that on paper a 431w power supply should be adequate for this board under any config, people are still
having reboot problems that can be attributed to inadequate power.

4) The 8KHA+ is the only 266a board exhibiting this power problem.

Thank you for participating.

<< to seat the ram better >>

Does anyone use products like Gold Mist contact lubricant when they install ram modules?

It's fairly cheap and may alleviate some of the problems people have been having seating ram.

Using Enermax 431w here and my 5volt rail is 4.98v on average so no problems with my Epox 8KHA+ .

Does anyone know if the extra USB cable from an Abit KT7A will work with this epox board? the epox uses 2 more wires compared to the ABit one

I don't know if the ABIT usb cable would work, but it should be easy to find an epox one. I've seen a few places sell them for $1. I bought mine for $0.08.

<< Gregor, I'm also concerned about the power issues with this board. I've researched it but still can't seem to find any CONCLUSIVE information. I have an Enermax 465P-VE. I bought it because I didn't want to have to worry about power issues and now it looks like I still need to be concerned.

If someone knows of a clear cut, scientific explanation regarding the power issues with this board please post it! This is all that is keeping me from ordering at this time.

If you look at some of the older 8KHA+ threads you might come across my system specs. 100% stable while overclocked, and I'm using the Enermax EG465P-VE (FC). The lowest rating on the +5v rail I've ever gotten is 4.84v (when I was overclocking the @#%^ out of my AthlonXP when I first got it) which is well within the 5% tolerance permitted by the ATX 2.01 spec.

Here are the DDR settings I use in the Bios on mine...these are the most aggressive. I would suggest bumping the DDR voltage a notch to 2.7V.

System Performance - Turbo
DRAM Clock- 133mhz
DRAM Timing - Manual
SDRAM Cycle Length - 2
Bank Interleave - 4 Way
DRAM PreChrg to Act CMD - 2T
DRAM Act to PreChrg CMD - 6T
DRAM Active to CMD - 2T
DRAM Queue Depth - 4 Level
DRAM Drive Strength - Auto
DRAM Command Rate - 1T Command
DCLKI Timing - 0 ns
DCLKO Timing - 0 ns
Fast R-W Turn Around - Enabled
Continuous DRAM Request - Enabled

Also, I am using WinXP Corporate, and three 256mb sticks of regular Crucial DDR @ 160mhz FSB...

I got a 8KHA+ board from Newegg in early November. It has the N+ BIOS chip. Everything was running very smoothly for about 3 weeks, and then I started having lockup problems. Just out of the blue, my system will freeze, not allowing me to do anything but hit RESET or POWER (no BSODs or anything of that nature). Here's what I'm running right now:

Supermicro SC760A full-tower ATX case
300W Supermicro PSU w/redundant cooling
Athlon XP 1700+ CPU, cooled with Alpha PAL8045+Delta 80mm 68 cfm fan (running at stock speed)
Epox 8KHA+ motherboard
512MB Crucial PC2100 DDR RAM
Nvidia TNT2 32MB AGP video card
Adaptec AHA-2930U PCI SCSI card
Maxtor 13.6GB 5,400 rpm ATA/33 hard drive
Plextor UltraPlex40 40x SCSI-2 CD-ROM drive
Teac CD-R56S-600 6/24 SCSI-2 CD-R drive
Castlewood ORB 2.2GB external SCSI-2 removable drive
Sound Blaster Live! X-Gamer PCI sound card
3Com 3C905B 10/100 PCI NIC
Microsoft Windows XP Professional

I hope I don't have one of those bad N+ BIOS chips. This system is my primary machine and is relatively mission-critical. I'm going to try updating the BIOS, but I really hope that I don't have to RMA this board to get a "fixed" one. I can't afford to go even a DAY without this system. Grrrr.......

The K,L, N+ U= or whatever writen on the BIOS chipset just means the BIOS date code, not BIOS chip brand or model. Just install the latest BIOS from the Epox website.

The BIOS chip brand and model is under the sticker with K,L, N+ U= or whatever.

From what I understand, the Hyundai BIOS chips are giving the least (or no) trouble.

That bios wouldnt even load on mine, says it is not the right Bios string for my Mobo and I def. have the 8KHA+.
I am def having the soft boot issues over 145fsb and I am also having some stability issues in both 98SE and 2k. I am wondering if it is my 330w enermax PS with a DVD,CD burner, 1HD,3case fans, 80m on HS,Vid card fan and chipset fan on ombo. Going to get an SX1040B in a couple of weeks and see if that helps at all. Throw my K7S5A I am building to replace the 2nd rig (have the mobo already)
+5v rail is a bit week. Dropped to 4.8x during Prime 95 last nite so wonder if that can be an issue somehwere.

Well, I don't have any more problems. I re-installed the stock drivers for my Vooodoo5 5500 AGP and it's running fine. I think the OpenGL files from the other drivers I had are still installed because my OpenGL performance is through the roof.

I've been up for 4 and a half days without any hiccups. I hope that was the end of my rebooting problems.

Well I don't have to worry about a soft boot when you overclock over 145 cause mine won't overclock over 143 so I am one of the lucky ones that don't have to worry about it, With a XP1900 I don't care that much it is fast as I need at 133 and stable with a 400+ power suply and a swiftech heatsink
