The next step up after 2001FP?

So dont ask why, but suppose I've got about 1500 to spend on a monitor. Yes, I've earned it Im not some spoiled kid. I've already got a 2001FP, and having run dual monitors for quite some time, I am convinced that dual monitors sucks. So Im not getting another 2001FP.

I was thinking of getting an LCD TV to run in a dual monitor setup and also as a display for sort of a home theater thing in the bedroom. I've got an L shaped desk and the idea is to have the 2001FP for work, and run the LCDTV for gaming.

What IS the next step?

BTW:
1) THREE 2001FPs is completely retarded.
2) dual monitors sucks because you never use one as much as you do the other, so it ends up being a waste. Also turning the computer on and off means you need to set up all those windows again... and if you dont set up the windows then its a waste.

Ok, forget the money for a second. What did you have in mind? Dell's 30" LCD TV looks pretty sweet and runs about 2k. It can be used as a gaming monitor and as a TV for movies and cable.

Im sorry I brought up the money. Forget the money. Whats the next step?

this 30" lcd tv got reviewed at anand awhile ago. click me. it looked pretty good and is about 1700 on price watch.

HP makes a really good 23" i forget the model number. apple also makes a good 23" but its expensive, you wont be able to run the 30"(in native resolution).

i highly doubt your finding anything over 30" for less then $1800. so i would go with the syntax olevia

Set a 22" NEC Diamond Pro next to it. You'll throw away that Dell.

Some people are never satisfied.

The new Apple 30" cinema display would be a nice upgrade for you, but it requires a serious videocard and a large cash investment.

Will they ever start making most computer monitors in a 16:9 aspect ratio, similar to HDTVs?

After about 1/2 hour, he would come crying back for the Dell. Eyestrain is a serious problem w/ CRTs.

It's not a simple matter of vision loss. It's the headaches and the mental strain that looking at a CRT over long durations can cause.

I'm a CAD-monkey, and even with a ViewSonic P220F 22" CRT I was getting eyestrain. I would go home every day with headaches, and I would feel mentally drained. Once I switched to an LCD, these problems went away.

The LCD also produces a more accurate 2D image.

1280x768 on a 30" screen means you are going to have to sit fairly far away to see an image instead of the actual individual pixels.

No, it sucks for you that you have to use that 2-ton oversized paperweight.

If you think a more accurate 2D image, less power consumption, more desk space, and the fact that the monitor doesn't serve as a space heater for the room sucks, then uh...I guess it does suck for us?

LCD's and CRT's each have their advantages and disadvantages. If you don't like LCD's, well that's great...but trust me, it doesn't "suck" for everyone that likes them. I have a 19" G400 so it's not like I have never used a good CRT. Instead of buying my 2001FP, I could have purchased a 21"/22" CRT and had a large amount of money left over. Why would I (and millions of other LCD users) spend the extra money if I/we didn't think they were superior? Not that they are in ALL aspects, but for me at least, the pros far outweighed the cons.

If you don't want to limit the money involved, why not get a 45+ inch plasma TV for 10 grand?

The problem with an LCD TV is resolution. It would be nice to watch movies from bed, but gaming would look crappy from anything other than a decent (normal TV viewing) distance away. How about just a bigger LCD? Dell's site has a Planar 23" LCD for $1619 that would probably be very nice or if money is no object go w/ the Apple Cinema Display. The 23" Apple Cinema display is $2000. Not a huge jump from the $1500 you mentioned (I guess ).

I would go with a Samsung 243T or if you want really big Go for a Samsung 46 or 50" DLP. I just bought the 50" DLP last week and it is amazing. The rear of the set has a VGA & DVI computer input. I haven't hooked up my system for gaming as I don't want to drag my computer surround sound speakers out and I don't have my TV's surround system yet.

I am looking forward to playing doom3 and rome total war on the big set

EDIT... Also, that 50" DLP has 1280 x 1024 resolution (I think??)

AFAIK, sony is just using OLED for small lcd screens (cameras, cell phones, < 6" screens or something like that). Im guessing that it would take about a year for them to adapt this technology to 15-17-19" to replace LCD monitors, then another year for it to actually hit the market, and then another year for the price to be reasonable. OLED is cool, but its a long way away

i was thinking of going for the dell 23" or maybe the 26" lcd myself, are there any reviews on either of these monitors as to everyday pc use? (the reason i'm going specifically with dell is because my company subsides' the purchase of dell equipment and they take the cost out of my check, making the purchase painless and at a discount).

The idea with an LCD TV would be that even though the resolution was low, I could AA it with a reasonable video card for gaming.

No super huge monitors/plasmas because it must fit on a desk. Should of specified that before.

Directron has a 30" lcd tv in their showroom playing doom now, and after a few minutes, I was definitely impressed. Totally couldnt use it for text editting though, and I do a lot of that...
