I guess MS made them an offer they couldn't refuse? </said with an attempted Italian accent for a bit of humour>

Maybe, but that would have to be quite a bit. Assuming this exclusive does a best case scenario of matching Uncharted numbers, thats 4-5 million copies. It took ps3, 360, pc, xb1 and ps4 for TR to hit 6 mil. I would think they would have to match that at a minimum for it to be worth Square's while.

More likely, Square had already said TR was a failure and didn't want to publish the sequel. So, MS jumped in and said "Hey! We will give you money for Xbox only release!"
If that was true then they wouldn't have announced it 4 months ago or would have announced it as Xbox only title. Unless Edios was going to cancel it and reapproach TR at a later date. Still doesn't make sense to have MS publish it, I meant Microsoft bought exclusive rights to Titanfall and that's still being published by EA even though Respawn technically isn't part of EA.

"So we didnt sell enough of the first Tomb Raider game so we're going to make the next one an Xbox One exclusive". U wot m8?

Exclusives from 3rd party developers make no sense in 2014 and are inherently anti-consumer.

TotalBiscuit's thoughts on the matter.

"on top of action adventure gaming"

By limiting it to one platform? Not even the greatest of spin doctors can find his way out of that self-contradiction.

More reverse language engineering and mumbo-jumbo dismantling here.

Square was only the publisher of TR, not the developer. I guess technically, Crystal Dynamics is owned by Square, but it doesn't seem like they have their support.

It is likely they didn't have a publisher willing to come on board (with Square Enix stating TR was a failure because it only hit like 3 million copies in the first month and not 5 million), so they shopped around. I'm sure MS, seeing TR as a success and knowing Sony has a competing in house franchise (Uncharted) was willing to snatch this up and move some consoles.

Suitcases full of cash are nothing new for MS.

MS paid $25 million each for timed exclusives on the GTA IV DLC, along with a reported $25 million to get GTA IV on the 360 at all:

http://www.gamespot.com/articles/mi...n-to-stop-gtaiv-ps3-exclusivity/1100-6262370/

Considering every other GTA was on the PS2 before GTA4 for a long time before hitting an Xbox console. GTA 4 also came out in 2008, while MS was having issues with the Xbox 360 and had "failed" with the Xbox. It wasn't like Rockstar was trying to give an FU to MS. It was simply not viewed as a mammoth player.

Do you think they had to pay Rockstar for GTA5? Hardly.

I don't understand this exclusivity BS. It _always_ works against the publisher's and studio's customers. Why do that? Do premiums paid by Sony or MS really outweigh that?

To me this just means i wont be adding this game to my 250+ steam library. Given the amount of alternative entertainment, I'd consider that more their loss than mine.

Just stupid.

Yes, when they can make millions before the game even ships...yeah it's worth it. Even if the game bombs and only sells 2million (xb1 has roughly 5 million consoles sold) they made a huge paycheck from MS already.

I liked the 2013 Tomb Raider release and was looking forward to this. I own an XB1 but I'm not buying this game. Not because I hate MS or the game, but because I wanted this on PC since I heard it was going to be on PC. I could have settled for PS4 if it didn't come to PC at all because I like that controller better, but as it is now...I won't be giving Crystal Dynamics my money for this game.

This is my first thought was. If Square wanted to sell 5M units of TR2013 in 3 months, and considered the game a failure because it sold less than that, wouldn't bringing to a platform with the lowest install base pretty much guarantee it to be another failure? According to Wikipedia, XB1 had sold 5M units as of April, and even though I know they've picked up since scrubbing the Kinect, but they're still being outsold 3:1 by the PS4. And both are outsold by PCs significantly.

Even with the truckload of cash I'm sure Square got, this seems very 'penny-wise, pound foolish'.

Think of it this way. You are making a product that will work regardless of brand. One brand pays you $25million to make it so that only their brand will work with your product. Your product is not released yet but you are getting paid already.

That's what is happening here. In the past MS has paid developers to keep certain things off the competition. The CoD DLC comes to mind. Every one that was exclusive or timed exclusive, MS paid $25million for.

MS probably paid them more than they expected to ever make in profit from the PS4 version.

Say they keep $25 per game and developing the PS4 version would add $25 million in development, support, marketing costs.

If MS paid them $25 million up front it's like selling 2 million copies of the PS4 version with zero effort and zero risk. If MS paid $50 million it's like selling 3 million PS4 copies. That must seem very attractive to a corporation.

"Meanwhile we’re going all out to try and make something truly special - the most ambitious Tomb Raider game ever built."

*Puts it on weakest hardware*

Its getting published by Microsoft Studios apparently instead of Square Enix, no PS4 release for awhile, maybe a PC release, some MS titles make it to PC.

I figured they would let them launch on PS4 sooner but that makes more sense. Since they are paying $25+ mil, they are thinking "why not stall PS4 launch 6 months and make the PC port WIN 9 exclusive while we are at it". All the while Microsoft recycles their annual "we care about PC gaming" propaganda.

Typically, when a studio is prompted about a PC port of their game, it's:
"There are limitations"
"It doesn't pay off as well"
"We sold out, we are excluded, I mean exclusive"

Microsoft on the other hand, days after making yet another "we love PC statement: We know you wanted a port of this game to PC for ages. We could have done it ages ago. We own the rights, too. And we could port it to PC with a minimal man hour investment. Ah, what the heck, here, we'll port it. We ported it just to show off a DX12 feature. Surprise! And guess what? WE WILL STILL NOT GIVE IT TO YOU!"

Every 3rd party agreement "has a duration". The only way it would never expire, is if they bought the IP or company.

Was happy to see it. Honestly, I don't care if it never ends up on PS4. Though the devs would be stupid not to, since it has a much bigger install base.

Microsoft always seems to conveniently forget about their othergaming platform. Which has an install base of at least 75 million active users. Quite a bit more than Xbox Live. That's not including MMO players and others who don't use Steam. Perhaps if they hadn't bungled up GFWL so badly, they might actually be making money off PC gaming.

Yea, me neither (even though I have a PS4 too). My rig will be upgraded by the time the exclusivity expires, so will be getting it for PC for sure. I played the 2013 version on my PC (in footnote) and it handled the game beautifully.

I don't understand this either. From what I can tell, they have given tended exactly ZERO to us, excluding anything with DirectX. For many people, gaming is the sole reason they still maintain Windows PCs...

If I didn't game on PC and do blu-ray authoring on the side, I wouldn't have a PC, I would run a macbook instead because it can go online check email etc just the same. You are right, at least in my case.

Yep, ran very well on my dual 6850s at 1080p. I'm getting the itch to upgrade but I want to wait for Broadwell or Skylake to come out. I think I actually paid full price for it on Steam as well, which I rarely do.

I think the final nail was when they closed ACES studio and shut down Flight Simulator. That was sort of their flagship product for years. Microsoft just makes more money from Xbox since they get a cut of the game sales. Not so with PC, which allows anybody to develop for it. So that's why it gets ignored. Never mind that PC gamers are still probably one of the dominant groups buying new desktop Windows licenses.

I agree with you there. The game had potential with that beautiful engine (and they finally managed a human looking Lara), but they blew it by turning it into a consolized, hand-holding QTE fest.

I bought TR on a cheap steam sale and was pleasantly surprised at how much I like the game. I hate QTEs with a passion, but oddly they don't bother me that much in this game. I guess it is because I sort of expected them in a platforming game like this, and it is more just a simple button press to do most things, not some random sequence of key presses. The only thing I don't like about the game, is that it seems to be getting quite repetitive now that I am near the end. The graphics and controls are outstanding for a console port though. I would kill for controls that were this precise in skyrim!!

Same here - I paid quite a hefty price for the Q9450 (bought it just when it came out) and it has served me extremely well in the past 6 years. So I'm planning to spend a lot on a new CPU again (and getting an Intel 6 core at least), so it will last me for years again.

I pre-ordered TR2013 on Steam and I loved every moment of it. I was quite sad when I heard about the exclusivity deal. Though I wanted to get an Xbox One anyway... with this being timed, I can get it on the best platform

I have a Phenom II 955 Black Edition that I bought a couple years back. Been a long time supporter of AMD. Always been the best bang for the buck. Yet they just can't get their act together lately. 220W TDP for the FX chips? And they can't even outperform some i5s?! Come on.

I'll probably go with a Core i5 next go around. Can't justify the cost of an i7. Especially since I need to get a new GPU and RAM (still rocking DDR2) as well. Been keeping an eye on what's going on with DDR4.

I picked the first one up for $10 on PC. I don't mind waiting to do the same for the sequel.
