<< are fairly sarcastic and contain very little thought. The character that Depp plays is precisely that type of person. He has little regard for anything or anyone other than himself. The beginning of the movie sets up this fact, when he is buying books from a widow (for a penny on the dollar). But enough of schooling you on a movie that you seem to have misunderstood. >>
Great post.
<< "The Girl" is an interesting character in the movie, indeed! My take on her? She is a demon attracted to Corso for his "character" and knowledge of the book. She is trying to pull him to the Devil and make sure that Corso puts the apporpriate pieces together so that he may make the journey. >>
I have an even different take on her, there were subtle clues in the movie. If you pay attention to each of the pictures that form the 9 gates you will notice that each of the nine gates was acted out. In fact in the final 9th gate that Corso finds at the end you will notice the girl in the picture is the one that has been assisting him all along, sitting with the devil. I take this to mean that Corso from the very beginning was selected to meet the devil, by the devil. The girl was along to ensure that he followed the path necessary to meet him and to ensure his safety during the journey. I think after seeing the picture for the ninth gate Corso realizes he has only to return to the castle to meet the devil, the question becomes, why does he go? The motivations portrayed in the movie that guide Corso are what I believe are the character traits the devil would seek, self absorbtion. All the others seeking the devil were in fact unworthy of the meeting. Brings up all sorts of questions and leaves the answers up the viewer.
