Yeah, that's what I'd heard as well. I was never a fan, but anytime you start killing off multiple regulars, it usually means you're struggling for viewers. So, rather than attempt some insane publicity stunt, maybe the writers decided they'd run out of good ideas, and they'd rather save what remaining dignity the show had by bowing out respectably, rather than trying to fight their way into another season or two.
Besides, I'd imagine these types of shows thrive on being new, exciting, ground-breaking, etc.; after a few years, they lose that edge, and it's pretty much impossible to get it back.
