Not sure which question I find more puzzling. Why the OP keeps obsessing about this stuff, or why I click on his threads.

I think it's just less stressful than having arguments with people I disagree with but who aren't on another planet. In those cases I often feel real anxiety as to whether I might not be able to defend my views to my own satisfaction. With the OP I don't have that worry, because he's so far out there that no rational engagement seems possible.

Also his links are educational - e.g. I didn't know that Jingle Bells' origins lie in US racism and minstrel-culture. Seems as if the OP is offended by facts, which causes him to post links that contain them. Hence being educational by accident.

It's also educational in revealing how blinkered conservatives apparently are, constantly hearing what they want to hear rather than what was actually said.

The academic didn't say the song "is racist" just that it originated from a racist context. That's a bit of historical information she dug up.

Of course, being an academic she is obliged to then over-egg the theory-pudding with what seem rather vague assertions about what that means , in order to get a paper out of it - inevitably involving using the word 'problematic' (I think the use of that word is compulsory in her field). But that's just what academics have to do across all kinds of topics. There's still a factual point in there.

Why get irate at someone telling you some historical facts? If stating the truth about the origin of the ditty 'ruins it for you, then maybe there's something you are trying to avoid thinking about?
